LOL @ anyone who wouldn't be satisfied with a 2,048 by 1,536 pixel 9.7 inch screen on a fucking tablet.

Who gives two shits whether it's "RETINA" classified through technicalities. It's going to look pretty fucking amazing whether you're using it as a monitor on your ceiling or a screen in your shower, period.
Oh ... forget it's 9.7" and not 10".

Forget when I said it's retina at a hair above 14" away. It's actually retina at below 14" away :p

14" would yield 55.8244926 arcseconds :D

Watch the iPad 3 comes out with the same 1024x768 screen as the previous two and we all cry.

People bitching about the resolution just don't know the dpi is retina class considering you view the iPad farther away.

The fact that people are actually bitching about a potential 2048*1536 on a 9.7" screen, something that was unfathomable just a year ago, by splitting hairs over whether it should be classified as 'Retina' or not, just completely blows my mind. Fucking 2048*1536. Just shut the fuck up.

Jeez, already defending the lackluster screen before it's announced? That's gotta be a new low.

"Everything is amazing and nobody's happy" is rarely truer.

If there's no retina display, I'll stick with mine. There's nothing really wrong with the performance of it, I just want that screen upgrade.
Same here, most definitely. And i'm still using iPad 1, I just don't find the need to upgrade unless its something major like retina.

Can anyone remind me when the conference and/or announcement is supposed to take place? I just looked at the OP and a few sites saying the new products will hit like march 9th, but WHEN are they being announced?
Sorry if its already been asked before :)

The rumors are March 7. There is absolutely no official word from Apple on anything yet. When they do announce it, trust me, you'll know.

I read tons of comics on my iPad 2. Will I see a noticeable improvement by viewing comics on the iPad 3?

It blows my mind why people ask these questions. You're aware noone has a clue, right, and anyone who answers will be talking out their asses. Every single thing about the iPad 3 is a rumor, and sketchy rumours at that. There is absolutely nothing confirmed about the specs, so performance guesses would be ridiculous.

i dont understand how you can read comics on a 1024x768 screen.. oven on my 24" monitor (1920x1200) im still zooming into panes

I use comic zeal and pinch it to fullscreen and its just like reading a physical comic. You don't do this?

I'm just wondering on a scale of 10 to AWSOME how awesome will reading comics be on a retina display?

i hate zooming.. i want to see the whole page, not just a single pane since some scenes are multipane and can span laterally or diagonally or across both pages

Probably a dumb question, but do I need to sell my iPad (iPad 2 - 64gb, 3G, black) ASAP on Craigslist this week in order to get as much as possible, or would there be little difference in what I should get (on Craigslist) after the announcement/price drop? Obviously there's no way to know for sure - this is mainly just gauging opinions and experiences others have had with re-selling. For the record, if I wait, I think I might be able to get a new iPad due to the fact that mine has an error (light leakage) and is within the one year. Theoretically I'd go to a physical Apple Store (where I bought it) and ask politely if it could be exchanged.

Also, if there are avenues other that Craigslist (keep in mind I'm in Canada and I'd rather sell face to face than shipping it elsewhere) that you'd recommend, let me know too. Thanks.

I tried reading comics on the ipad. but some text was a mess because of the resolution when you view the pages full. I don't like panning and zooming, but if I end up getting an ipad 3 or later one I will give comics a try again on that.

I don't know, looks fine to me on iPad.

In ComicGlass, I just zoom in a tad to crop out the white borders and the panels are probably 80% of actual size. Then that setting locks for the entire comic. Plenty readable.

Comic reading on iPad is easy as hell if you just read them in landscape mode. Then just scroll down a few times as you skim the page.

I don't enjoy portrait reading that much tbh.

Nah, that ruins the flow. Who wants to be constantly thumbing down the page? Each page viewed full at a time is best, just like a hard copy.

Just zoom out the white margins on most comics and lock that setting for the whole book, it makes a big difference and portrait is fine.

I can't believe you haven't jumped in yet. Aren't you made of money?

No no I usually wait a few years on new types of devices. I haven't quite had the need for an iPad given that I have a Touch for phonegaming, Nexus for phone (suck it), Air for personal, MBP for work, PSP, DS-->Vita, 3DS etc. etc. etc. There's really a sliver of a use case left in there and I think it might be board games. :p Although they are still quite solid on my old Touch too so haven't 100% gotten there guess I'll wait and see how wowowed I am by this.

Bah, I don't know, I have this jailbreak tweak that lets me tilt slightly to scroll (ala Instapaper), so I wouldn't know.

TBH though, with some older comics, portrait reading is fine, but with others, it's a bit uncomfortable.

From my experience you definitely need to sell asap in order to get as much as possible. There would be a flood of iPads put up for sale once the invites for an Apple event are sent out and, after the Apple has announced the next generation, resale prices usually drop at least a $100—there may even be a steeper drop this year if Apple keeps the iPad2 around at a reduced pricepoint. Moreover your particular model (64GB, 3G, black) is usually the one with the lowest demand on the resale sites because it's the most expensive. You should try to place it for sale right now in as many channels as possible.

There is very low chance that Apple will replace your iPad2 for a new iPad3 due to light leakage problems. It's more likely that Apple will swap it out for a refurbished iPad2 or send it in for repairs, assuming they still accept that it's a notable problem worth fixing under warranty.

hmm... Canadian gaffers have mentioned selling on Kijiji. It's a site similar to craigslist. You could also try offering in one of the canadian threads here.

:O didn't realise you had those many devices. I remember you saying that it was preferable to get a ipod instead of paying for the data plan. I see you still have the iPod touch + dumb phone setup...

I lol'd. For me it has replaced physical monthlies almost totally. I still grab a trade for the comics I truly love, double dipping.

iPad is a comics revelation, looking better than print floppies.

I've noticed the recent issues of Ultimate Spider-Man come with a code that let you redeem the digital version of the comic for free. I think that's fucking BRILLIANT and I really, really hope every other comics jumps on board.

The beauty of the higher res is that you won't have to zoom in very much to enjoy the full quality of the image. Of course they are already readable, in some cases without even zooming in if the text is big enough, but in the back of my mind I'm always thinking 'I'm not getting the full details, gotta zoom in'.

I can imagine that doubling the res will have a dramatic effect on how I read comics and print magazines on this thing. It should feel more natural on the eyes, and as you might look closer to a real comic book to enjoy one of the drawings, you will start doing the same with the iPad, rather than digitally zooming.

It's not like the parts aren't already floating around already, including the 4X display.

Anyway we should hear about the invitations tomorrow or wednesday. Probably tomorrow.

I'd cry and rage and buy an used iPad 2.

But it won't happen. Apple can't do this to me, not a second time.

They just can't!

Second time? IPad 2 was a significant upgrade to iPad 1 in performance. Unless you mean purely retina. iPad 1 was nearly unusable compared to 2.

I truly hopes Apple doesn't dilute its branding and call this a Retina Display when it clearly isn't. Or, at the least, add an asterisk or footnote in their marketing materials that specifies it is only a Retina-class Display when held from X minimum distance from the viewer's eyes.

I know a couple of people who won't upgrade their device until it has an actual Retina Display, and the purported resolution floating around just doesn't cut it. Anything less than the pixel density of the iPhone 4 screen would be tragic.

I'm talking about the retina part. Engadget/Topolsky reported about the QXGA display before the iPad 2 launch and it obviously didn't happen.

There wont be a "Retina Display" unless they shrink screen size. A double up of the previous resolution is what you will get and people disappointed in that are stupid.

You have got to be joking. 2048x1536 is higher res than most PC monitors, and you think that's tragic? It'll still be one of the highest density panels on the market, and will certainly be the highest denisty panel in this form factor for some time.
