Bloomberg: Microsoft lobbies HTC to dual boot Windows Phone 8 on Android phones

Samsung did it, once, with the ATVI or whatever the hell. It was basically a GS3, but not even they bothered this year, and those guys will ship nearly anything.

the ATIV S had some changes from the GS3! it only had 1GB of RAM and they had that whole faux metal look going for it...

As much as I dislike Microsoft, Nokia phones are nice, at least the 920 I got for a euro. Downsides to windows phone... their own way of doing things, no filesystem access and "what are apps". The downside to android is that unless you're buying a flagship model, you'll probably have a downgraded experience up to a point, so I'll probably be getting Nokia 520 for a family member. And the offline maps are great.

But honestly no matter how you look at it you're buying a phone from an asshole company, be it Microsoft, Google or Apple, it's just that Microsoft reeks of desperation whenever they are playing catchup in a market by throwing money around.

As for HTC, they make nice phones, I almost got the Desire 601 instead of the Nokia, but lol qHD resolution on a 4.5 inch display. :(

Should've dual boot the lumia line instead.

This. They wouldn't even have to beg or as the article put it, lobby anyone. There is already a market that has been waiting for that Android Lumia phone. HTC has already done WP8 and no one cared, not even the WP8 users.

Android Lumia with WP8 theme and MS services and integration. That could be a win for MS.

I don't have any idea why a phone company would want to ship a handset that runs two different OSes. The marketing and customer support would be completely confusing

It won't matter until Microsoft gets their app game in order. What they should do (as well) is vigorously lobby app developers to support Windows Phone and put heavy investment towards apps of their own.

This. Microsoft should be moneyhatting app developers to create apps for their platform. Everybody likes the clean look of the Windows Phone interface. The lack of apps is a deal breaker for a lot of people though. There are apps available on Blackberry that are not on Windows Phone :(

He gonna cry in the car
I would kill for an iPhone that could dual boot Android, yo.

Regular consumers couldn't care less, though.

Seems interesting. Might look into it if they did.

And hey look, the "android phones are slow except flagships" lie already popped up in this topic!

I thought Microsoft dictated the hardware that WP7/8 could run on? They are getting desperate. Stinks of a headless ship being reactive. Downhill from here

They did this and it failed spectacularly.
Or was it for the RT marketplace that no use?

I would consider windows phone os bloatware and out of the box wipe and install a custom android rom.

no dice MS if I or anyone that wants a windows phone they will buy one outright.

wish I could dual boot android on iphone 5c blue though the hardware feels nice in hand.

this feels like some kind of weird OS cuckholding....

Android 4.3 is shit on my Galaxy Nexus.

You have a 'Nexus' thats not running 4.4.

✓erizon.

Why are people angry at Microsoft?
I don't get it

Noone is 'mad' at MS. Its just kind of hilarious, even if you are interested in buying one. They are possibly trying to hitch a ride on phones that the OEM's actually care about making. Straight up stowaway OS style. I would totally buy one if it was an Android device I was already interested in, but holy hell does this reek of desperation.

No one really cares about HTC Android devices either by the looks of it.

i don't understand how anyone could dispute that there are 100% more truly awful android phones in the world than iPhones or WP8 devices. only android has seen usability be totally discarded in favour of price for a significant fraction of handsets.

i'm not saying that an affordable, smooth, competitively specced android device could not and indeed has not hit the market. i'm saying that all too often samsung & co. would rather victimise consumers with a steaming, clunky and unsupported piece of shit.

I don't think it could hurt HTC to expand their Winphone range. People don't care about their phones right now, so it's not like should be afraid of becoming market-irrelevant.

Part of me could see them porting WP8 to the HTC One with the GDR3 spec boost to WP next month or whenever it arrives, wouldn't really take any effort.

They did this and continue to do this.

One could argue that HTC's decline was not helped by the fact that they distracted themselves with WP8 in 2012, when they were in a strong position with Android in 2011.

8x is a nice piece of hardware. Besides the flush buttons. And the crap camera.

It's a GSM Nexus and 4.4 isn't even out yet. Not sure if it's going to help either. Every update after 4.1 made the performance worse. 4.1 was beautiful.

btw, Nelson is pointing and laughing at your avatar.

This is an interesting strategy. Interesting in that dual booting sounds like a silly thing for a phone, and HTC having trouble selling phones with the most used OS on it, not sure how MS is trying to convince them that WP is their savior.

I know ap support is terrible, but the actual OS looks damn good. Maybe I'm just rooting for the underdog, but it certainly *looks* nicer than my android set up.

Millions of others probably would have though. So not much of a loss.

"Probably" is the keyword. Samsung is the only OEM making big money on Android and they started big by making fake iPhones. Other OEMs sell around as many phones as Nokia or a bit more, but the difference isn't massive.

Why don't you go back to 4.1?

How did Xiaomi manage to make so much money?

There's not even an official youtube app that works, since google and MS are having a pissing fight and google blocked it. Then there are, or were, Nokia funded exclusive apps/games which have trickled onto other devices after a period of exclusivity. Some apps never made the transition to Windows Phone 8 from 7 like Hydro Thunder. MS needs to dump money into their app market to fix a huge hole in their appeal.

I just got an 8x, since it's a $1 on att contract. It's the best phone ATT offers at that price really unless you just want a two year old iphone 4s. The OS looks unique, runs great, and offers compelling hardware both at the top end and low end. It just needs more apps and awareness, nothing wrong with some competition.

This is the same Microsoft that threatened PC manufacturer Hitachi that they'd end preferential licensing terms with them for Windows if they sold machines that dual-booted BeOS.

Because I'm not 16 anymore and don't have time to fiddle with little shitty flash tools. And isn't that beside the point? It's not my job to make a device usable again that got fucked up by the manufacturer's software updates.

Who?
WjFvAAw.gif

it's not that hard or time consuming...
after using a asop rom I can't even fathom using iOS or even stock android.

See you wouldn't be in this situation if you wait around and read some feedbacks before you upgrade. Apple/Google/MS, their interests don't align with your interest. Apple is in the business to sell you more hardware, Google is in the business to get you stay online for as long as possible, MS...I don't know what the hell do they want anymore. Their mobile OS system upgrades reflex those goals. If you think Google is hiring hundreds of programmers to to improve your mobile phone user experience for free, I got news for you.

Do you think I will type a wiki post for you?

honestly the only place that helps me immensely and actually have the users interest and how they use there mobile devices in mind is XDA and their development communities for android.

god bless em

Who pays for the extra space needed to host two OS? And do they even use the same file system for storage? I guess both os can access fat32 as secondary storage, but everything else have to be doubled.

It's quite evident that MSFT expects HTC or the customers to pay for this.
And as with everything with MSFT lately it's a shitty deal for the OEM involved .
