Bloomberg; "Nintendo Rises as New Titles Spur Overseas Sales: Tokyo Mover"

It's a good time to be a Nintendo investor. :-)

Although, the Wii U is an unfortunate setback...its net impact on Nintendo's balance sheet continually worries me.

Most of the Flagship staff moved to Nintendo when Capcom shut it down.

An eternal misconception. "Most of the staff" stayed at Capcom. Some people moved over to Nintendo, but the people who DID move were very important (like Fujibayashi).

Finally people will stfu about Wii U being dead and Nintendo being doomed. All it needed was First party games to boost momentum. Once Japanese third parties see Nintendo making an effort they will jump on board. I don't care about western third parties anymore considering their arrogant attitude towards Nintendo.

Who said anything about "Nintendo being doomed"? The company can still operate and succeed even if the Wii U results in an overall net loss for the company.

And how does this news translate into a positive for Wii U sales? In all regions, the console is still dramatically underperforming and software sales continue to be very low.

Nintendo isn't doomed, and they never were, but the WiiU is still a floundering console. This news changes nothing. There is nothing to take out of it in regards to future performance of consoles. People that thought Nintendo is "doomed" were already fighting against reality, so why would this news change anything?

edit: whoops nevermind just saw your edited post, you're one of those people that think third parties are actively trying to destroy a console and that this news had... anything to do with the wiiu

I'm just tired of the "Nintendo is doomed" sentiment. I don't think they are doomed considering they have been around 124 years and haven't shutdown tons of studios like western companies have. Nintendo just refuses to do things like other companies and gets flack for it, although even I agree that Wii U should have been delayed and made in line with the competitors hardware (and with a different name...)

This is off of 3DS recent NPD success with Animal Crossing, nothing more. If you think investors are impressed the WiiU shifted an extra 12-15k in Japan last week, you're dead mistaken.

The positivity here is that Nintendo still has a strong future with their dedicated handheld business, rather than being completely doomed across the board.

I don't really see why.
They are dominating the handheld market, but they have absolutely no chance on the home console market.
I think its extreamly unlikely that the WiiU will even reach a Gamecube level of sales.

I don't think that this is a positiv situation for Nintendo.

Nintendo is my childhood favorite, and I would have a Wii U - if not for that monstrosity of a controller...

They have the more traditional controller the Wii U Pro and also Wii Remotes/Nunchucks work with it already...although I agree I just bought a Pro controller because sometimes I just don't feel like using the GamePad.

Again, who is seriously going around saying "Nintendo is doomed"?

People have been predicting failure for the Wii U, but Nintendo's successes with the 3DS are widely known and recognized.

despite that, there's still regular talk about how nintendo would be better making games for other devices. i think for a lot of people, nintendo bowing out of the hardware market and making third-party games is what constitutes 'doom.'

console sega? what?

I divide Sega in two parts PC and console

PC = total war and Relic
Console = Sonic Team all of the IPs from classic sega (Virtua fighter, Yakuza, Crazy Taxi etc...)

Sammy does not seem to like console Sega and from what I read is trying to devalue them

The controller is surprisingly comfortable. I love using it. Surprised the hell out of me.

Hopefully they come up with better ways to use it soon though. Even for inventory and maps though at least it is convenient.

Me too, I disliked it at first, but after a few hours, it really grows on you, I am at the point now, that not using it feels odd (Except in fighting games, you really need a pro controller for those.

Im guess he means all Sega but Relic, TCA and SI.

Yeah, I know.

oh. well if that was the case, i think they would probably try getting the sega brand name too. although that seems much more like a microsoft thing than a nintendo thing.

as far as atlus goes, i'm not sure how well-prepared they could be for an snk playmore style reboot, but that would be my first guess. failing that, there are other third-parties that would swoop in sooner than any first-party would. however, if there was a first-party to express interest, it probably would be nintendo. i'd place them pretty low on any list though.

This is good news for Nintendo, and hopefully will continue to push forward better news. I am betting the Wii U sells pretty well this holiday season, and will certainly sell more than both XB1 and PS4 if for no reason than both will be supply constrained like every launch both companies have ever done.

I definitely think Nintendo would buy the name as well as the console division.

Sammy doesnt seem to want it and to me at least seems to be trying to devalue them.

I dont know any other company that could do Sega justice besides Nintendo.

3DS beating dying consoles shouldn't be anything to get excited over. The fact it took it so long to do that is quite telling.

Being at the top of the charts is generally quite good. Whilst the PS3 and 360 are old, it's not like they're selling badly or anything, new 360 SKUs are still being released, loads of people bought a PS3 for TLOU. When you say "Oh it's Number one BUT" it just reeks of continually moving goalposts.

Unless you know how sales are, being at the top could mean anything. Have you been following the NPD? The PS3 had no hardware sales boost from TLoU at all, and the 360 was well down too. Both sold under 150k, with PS3 being closer to 100k - not good at all. 3DS should've been outselling both of them from the very start, not when they're on their way out like they are currently. Nintendo are still very much on course to miss their targets with both 3DS and Wii U worldwide this fiscal year.

The devil's in the detail.

some really good news here. Deserved since the 3DS has been astoundingly good thids year and we're still in July. DKCR, FE, AC, Mario & Luigi, LM2, then we'll get Pokemon and Zelda among other things...all in 2013. Finally a positive Nintendo thread

This is their reasoning:
1) SMT4 sold well
2) Nintendo have a good relationship with them (presumably FExSMT adding to that)

Pure speculation.
I can make the same point about Sony:
1) P4G sold well
2) Sony have a good relationship with them

OMG Sony are buying Atlus......

-____-

I'm not sure if Sony ever did a big promotion such as $30 credit for buying a first party game and an Atlus game (correct me if I'm wrong), and Sony hasn't done a crossover with SMT, which is much bigger than simply "having a good relationship with them."

I highly doubt Nintendo is interested in buying Atlus, but they're definitely a lot closer to them than Sony is nowadays. The two situations aren't really comparable.

You don't understand.

Rule Number One of Nintendo: Nintendo is doomed.
Rule Number Two of Nintendo: If Nintendo is doing well, it's a fluke or it doesn't count, and they're doomed once the fad is over.

Why should it have outsold them both straight away? New hardware isn't always a sure-fire success, as I'm sure the PS4 and Xbox One will show later this year.

Nintendo critics:"Nintendo sucks, doesn't have games."
Nintendo buys some exclusives(bayoneta2) and studios.
Nintendo critics:"Buhhh Nintendo stealing our games/companies."

Have to admit I'm interested in Wii U because W101 looks awesome, and so does Mario - who would have guessed? I just don't think I can convince the wife with that controller. She is all in for the PS4 though, because she can do other things like watch Netflix

And she loves TLoU !!! Was surprised to come down from the office and see her playing it the other day.

The WiiU has Netflix.

PS3/360 were in their sales peak very recently. It isn't like they peaked 6 years ago on release and it has been downhill every year since. Was the best year for them 2011? 2012? So yea, it is still a pretty good accomplishment.

That's right, but is the 3DS just another platform? Nintendo seemed be quite optimistic, but so far I don't think the 3DS has hit any of its targets outside of Japan even after the price cut. Of course, Pokemon will be huge, so maybe then the 3DS will move from mostly mediocre sales to impressive sales.

The article in the OP is saying the Wii U is doing bad.

Animal Crossing has greatly turned around the system's sales in the west.

The times I see "WiiU is doomed" posts the most is form Nintendo fans who use it sarcastically in a way to undermine any negative criticism that may have a serious consequence. I don't think anyone genuinely believes Nintendo are doomed.

Holy shit, this should be like a banner on the top of the screen.

You obviously have never seen every show on Gametrailers ever.

End of the year when the WiiU gets crushed by Sony/Ms is going to be hilarious.

At its current price... sure...

Expect it to sell competitively with PS4 and Xbox One however if it drops its price and/or packs in a significant title.

A price drop is highly likely. How significant it is is of course yet to be determined, but say Nintendo drops the cost to 199.99 (or 249.99 with a pack in title). Nintendo will be in an interesting position come the fall where they can seriously under cut the comeptition with a nice price cut (and of course some solid core exclusives to go along with it). I am curious to see what happens. The way I see it, if they do nothing, than yeah, they won't last long this generation. They will be lucky to see lifetime Gamecube numbers I think in that case.

Nintendo has done well with the 3ds, not great but certainly a big improvement. The recent run of games was well put together, an adventure game, a 2d platformer, an srpg, Animal Crossing, and a niche Japanese game. The Wii U has nothing to do with this small bump.

Very unrealistic. The price is not the problem. The fucked up marketing and lack of games are, but that's soon about to change. Everywhere outside of the US you can get the Wii U (depending on the retailer) for 300 or less, anyway.

For the US a price cut to 299 would "look nice", sure.
