man i really like toby kebell so it's a damn shame he keeps appearing in these shit flops. now add to that jack huston who is prolly one of the best actors i've seen on TV in the last 10 years as the lead in this piece of crap and it's just....whew.

It's a Will Smith-type role, but outside of After Earth, I don't recall him ever having a truly terrible performance, and After Earth is justified since M. Night Shyamalan has the uncanny ability to suck the charisma out of even the most amazing of actors.

One of the trades ran an article saying that Ben Hur was tracking for a $13-14M opening.

It might end up behind both Kubo and War Dogs next weekend. After next weekend we hit the real dry spell. Don't breath might be the only film with the potential to crack $10M OW until Sept 9th. With a few minor under performances, we might not get a $20M+ opener again until The Magnificent Seven on Sept 23rd.

As Suicide Squad shows, there are still benefits to releasing your film when most people under 21 are off of school, lightly employed, and have more spare time than they know what to do with. Even front-loaded films get a solid first set of weekdays before people start losing interest. Suicide Squad might end up with a similar second weekend to BvS, but it will easily avoid the sub 2x OW multiplier fate.

That said, I think studios are finally cluing into the fact that picking a different month is better than cramming 3-4 mid-level releases into every week of June and July so that they all suffocate each other.

If you look at next year's schedule , it's pretty clear that the studios have decided to make March/Spring Break season a new dumping ground. I don't expect the rest of April to make it through the decade before we see notable films scheduled every week.

Based off updated industry figures this morning, The Warner Bros/DC pic is headed toward a -67% second weekend drop that’s quite close to Batman v. Superman,‘s -69% free fall. That was one of the worst second frame declines for a superhero movie tying with 20th Century Fox’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine. For a second last night, it looked like Disney/Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy would hold the record for best second weekend in August with $42.1M, however, Suicide Squad looks like it’s headed toward a $44.4M weekend. Many reports show the film spiking today in ticket sales.
