Borderlands 2 - PC Performance Thread

Thank you so I'm not the only one that has seen the issue! Yeah me and my friend can't connect to each other at all either by invite or join game. Yet we can play together when we join through another friends game. Apparently I can only join select friends games. Really frustrating since we want to play co-op but no dice.

I was able to fix this by validating my cache again. Not sure it'll work for everyone, though.

This makes sense, I'm going to try it out now.

My earlier post : I was playing at 2560 x 1440 res, all settings maxed, 60 FPS capped on a slightly overclocked 7970. Silky smooth everywhere (60 FPS+) until the moment where more than 3 bad guys start mixing it up, then it drops to 15 FPS (at one point, FRAPS recorded 10 FPS). This isn't a little drop, this is something else.

Maybe running Physx on the CPU in addition to AI when bad guys enter the scene, taxes the CPU too much and it all goes to complete shit?
I would've expected AMD cards to choke a little on Physx, but not like this.

I'm going to retry Physx at low to see what happens because I think a restart is needed first.

CONFIRMED - low FPS drops in battles, with AMD cards, is due to Physx. Set to Medium or Low to get the game more stable (depending on CPU capabilities)

Sad that a game conforms to an in-game option like this, it feels like I'm only experiencing 85% of the way the game was meant to be experienced because of a choice of GPU vendor ...

Ok so I had a power outage while playing Borderlands 2. Now when I launch the game it says something about the Steam Cloud files not matching the local files. I have to either select to upload the local files to steam cloud or download the cloud files to my PC. What one should I choose and why?

Playing this on medium with my 8800GTS; getting about 35-50FPS but dips down to 27FPS when in the menus. Still pretty smooth in my opinion, coming from console gaming lol.

id probably go with the local but thats just my guess

If I had to guess, your local files are the most recent and just never sync'd because of the forced shut down. If there's a way to spot where they are you should check the last time they were modified and try to remember how close to the power outage that was.

Not a big deal either way because the game saves often locally. But how often does it save for Steam cloud out of curiosity?

I don't think it does until you quit to desktop. It usually just syncs up normally on reboot if the sync isn't completed before steam shuts down but the power outage might have thrown it for a loop.

Makes sense. Thanks for the reply. I selected the local file option and it brought me back to exactly where I left off.

Somethings up.

When I turn everything to the max, resolution at 1920x1080 I get drops into the 30s pretty frequently.

I'm using a GTX 680
AMD 1090T
8 GB RAM
W7 64

What gives?

I've alternated v sync on and off and all the FPS caps. Still get drops.

DAMN look at this mess!!

Same situation here. With one particular friend, either one of two things happens: I accept the invite through the Steam GUI, and the only thing that happens is a dialog box pops up displaying the status of my friend's game. No actual attempt to join is made. Otherwise, the connection always times out after 30 seconds.

Played a little bit earlier in 3D..I'm meh to it. Maybe I need to adjust some settings but it didn't seem like the implementation was all that special. The fluid especially doesn't look right in 3D.

Anyone experience frequent crashing?
I can't play more than 30 minutes without it crashing on me now. I'm at the part where
you have to find Reiss in order to get into Sanctuary

This game is ridiculously optimized and looks excellent.

1680x1050
everything maxed out/on but PhysX only on Medium and vsync off
22 to 62 fps smoothing option

E8400 @ 3.2GHz and HD4870 512MB, 4GB DDR2 RAM

Runs great so far in the tutorial area.

Just posting my experience: i7 920/HD5850 with no overclocking at all, 1080p with all settings on highest except physx on low, AF to 4x, Framerate to max 60... it feels like it mostly runs between 40 and 50 fps but when there's lots of stuff on screen/a huge wide open area it definitely drops below 30. I turned view distance down to high from very high, disabled DOF (I never like it anyway) and AO ( :'( actually it doesn't make a huge difference but it is something you notice) and now it seems to be staying closer to 60 most of the time with heavy action taking it down to near 30 (but not below). At those settings it's always playable in the heaviest action I've gotten to though admittedly I've only gotten to the point where I'm leaving Sanctuary for missions after I got there.

Game maxed out - average 70fps, low 40s when shit hits the fan

Alienware M15x
i7 920xm
8GB DDR3 1333mhz
5870m 1GB @ 800/1150

I take back what I said on Physx last night. On high, shit goes everywhere in gunfights. It's great to have that extra flair but unfortunately I had to turn it off to keep 60fps. I don't miss it but it does looks nice. Major fights get me into 15fps territory. Playable and it feels a lot smoother than 15fps would indicate but I sense some shooting lag which is enough of a deterrent. The game does run at 60fps about 80% of the time though other than when shit hits the fan. I guess I will have to wait to get a 680 next year to see them benefits.

2600k @ 4.3
2GB 6950
8GB ram

I don't known what drivers I'm on but its at least a month or two old. Anyway decided to cap the fps to 60 and its been smooth. I have it dip to 55 or so when it gets hectic. I can't remember the exact graphics settings but they're almost all maxed out. I'll take ss tomorrow.

Runnin with an i5 3550@ 3.3, 8gb Ram,and gtx660ti and this game runs smooth, really good job by Gearbox on this one.

Last night I played on "max?" (physx was off) settings 1920x1080 and it was running better then I expected. Got home tonight and played again and instantly the performance was substantially worse. Even lowered all the settings and resolutions, quite odd.

I am using alienware mx17 laptop about 2 months old.

Yeah man, same here, it seems to be related to the type of particles because on snow I get 60 FPS with a couple enemies but where there is wood and splinters I get to around 30ish and below depending on how crazy shit is.

For me around 40 FPS and below the game starts feeling unresponsive so I ended up turning it off and now I'm back to a solid 60 FPS.

Has anyone done any digging through config files to see if it's possible to turn the PhsyX fluid stuff off while keeping everything else on max?

The fluids just look hideous.

I'm playing this on maxed out settings with Physx on Medium. Not sure how much FPS I'm getting, but I haven't noticed any slowdown and I played it with two of my friends.

Core i5 2500K
Radeon 6950 1GB
8GB RAM DDR 3
Windows 7 x64 Ultimate

Only things I need fixed are the install loops/prompts and the online joining. Everything else is pretty gravy. Really impressed with how good the pc version is.

Oh, I do have one thing. Anyway to alleviate the pop in when loading to a new area or opening a chest. It's pretty distracting.

Yes. It seems to run so well, but every so often crash to black screen and I have to close it.

I had issues with a very similar setup (OC i5-750 and OC 5850) trying to keep it at 60 FPS. Very strange kind, like when overlooking the small camp at the start you'd get 60 FPS looking just to the right (with the entire camp and enemies still in view) but then 30 FPS if I moved the view an inch to the left.

I have found though that with PhysX on low and everything else at maximum, I can leave it at "Capped 30" and have never once seen it budge. Even turning on FRAPS recording does not affect it in the slightest. To me that is indicative of some engine quirks, the CPU is very obviously bored out of its mind but the GPU acts like it is CPU bound when the FPS is uncapped (as the drops are not in line with GPU load during monitoring).

My framerate is constantly below 30 even with everything set to low.

Is it a driver/game problem or is it time to upgrade again :/ ?

I7-920 @ 3.8Ghz, 6 gbs of ram, GTX 680 on a 1680x1050. PhysX high, runs mostly at 71 fps. Framerate is locked @ 72, maybe I should just keep it unlocked? I did notice in a few battles with robots. I'm talking about 15-20 bots on screen blowing up, with debris and shit everywhere, my framerates dipped down into the 35-40ish area. Not terrible, but noticeable. I'm thinking of turning either AA down a bit or physX to medium. I really like physX though. I'm wondering if I overclocked my CPU a bit to maybe 4.2Ghz if that would help. I know that it's supposed to be running of my 680, but I'm wondering if it'll help alleviate some of the framerate dips I get in super intense battles. Ideas?

Overcloking your CPU won't solve anything. That's really strange that with such a GC your framerate tanks. You have the latest drivers right ?

Make sure that you force Physx on your GPU in the NV control pannel, mind you sometimes (as you can turn on a Physx indicator) the CPU handles the calculations.

I really have to applaud Gearbox and NVIDIA for this one - running really well with 306.23 at 5760x1080 on 4-way SLI GTX 680s with a 3960x @ 4.5 GHz. Everything maxed out and I'm getting around 50-60 FPS (average...peaks at 100+). I am sure further optimizations are to come...but the fact that things are working so well right now (typically I have tons of NV Surround issues at launch) means they actually put some significant effort to polish it up prior to launch.

Very un-PC like of you Gearbox!! :) Very awesome. I could get used to this!

I'm surprised there is even a performance thread for this game. Maxed out all options and the game has never dipped from 60 fps once. It's completely smooth.

So I've seen some people have been having issues with connecting to friends' games? I'm glad I'm not the only one.

Its strange, because I can connect to random games through quick matches and also through the match browser or whatever its called, but I can't connect to my friend's specific game. I've only tried with one friend so far, but if anyone is willing to just test the connection with me I'll be available all day.

Same... I maxed out everything expecting a framerate dip. Bumped phyx to max. Silky smooth 60 FPS. I'm loving it.

This game looks freakin' gorgeous.

Physx is ridiculous in a good way. My 680 was dropping to 30 fps when shit hit the fan. I popped in a GTX 460 for dedicated physx, and now I'm staying above 100.

This game is so much fun. It blows Borderlands 1 out of the water.

i52500k stock
Gtx465 1gb factory oc
8gb ram
1920x1200

Everything maxed, physx low. Getting a steady 45 fps. Haven't really monkeyed around with anything too much though

Just thought I'd update. I played last night with physx turned up to medium, and the only thing I adjusted was turning draw distance down to high from ultra (or whatever they call it). No difference in performance. This morning I just cranked physx up to high and I dip to 40 fps when it gets hairy, but otherwise everythings running great. Really happy I went the PC route on this one, and I didn't even expect to use physx.

For reference, the Batman games pretty much turn to shit when I turn up physx.

I'm on a GTX680, and I can't seem to be able to adjust the PHYSX settings. it appears grayed out. Any idea?

What drivers are you using? Make sure you are using the new 306 and when you install them you do a Clean Install and be sure the PhysX portion of the driver is set to install (It will tell you if you currently have it installed here as well as the version).

There are three settings for physX right? Is there a setting that has debris and cloth physics but no fluid physics?

Is there a safe fix for the .NET loop yet?

I don't know if you're encountering the same thing I did, but I let that .net framework install go through the repair cycle once. It came back up on screen after a reboot and I canceled out of the installer. Haven't seen it since and I've been able to log in about 4 hours of BL2 between last night and this morning without any issues. Win 7 x64.
