Boston Attackers Mother Blames U.S. For Attacking Her Sons

MAKHACHKALA, Russia — The mother of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects insisted Thursday that her sons are not responsible for the attack and said she did not see any aggression in the older brother, even when the FBI questioned him two years ago.

Speaking to reporters in Russia, Zubeidat Tsarnaeva also said the elder son, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, came to Russia for six months last year to attend a family wedding, visit relatives and later renew his Kyrgyzstan passport.

“America took my kids away from me,” she said. “I’m sure my kids were not involved in anything.”

U.S. investigators have said they want to know more about why Tamerlan Tsarnaev was in Russia. When he returned to the United States in July, he began posting radical Islamic videos to his YouTube account.

Russia twice asked the United States for more information about Tamerlan Tsarnaev in 2011, investigators say, but the FBI found no sign of terrorist activity, and Russia failed to provide more information about why they were concerned about him.

In her press conference, the mother said that the younger and surviving brother, Dzhokhar, has not been questioned by investigators. She said that the brothers have not been identified as suspects by the U.S. authorities, only by reporters.

Both assertions have been directly contradicted by investigators. Tsarnaeva also said that the elder son, who investigators say was killed after a shootout with police early Friday, was alive longer than official accounts suggest.

“I wanted to scream to the whole world,” she said. “Why did they have to kill him? Why? They got him alive.”

Tsarnaeva, a naturalized American citizen, said that she is considering renouncing her citizenship. She evaded a question about traveling to the United States. Her husband, Anzor Tsarnaev, said he planned to leave later Thursday but did not have a ticket.

The family came to the United States on an asylum petition a decade ago, and the parents have since returned to Russia. The mother suggested Thursday she regrets coming to the United States.

“Why did I even go there? Why?” she said, crying. “I thought America was going to like protect us, our kids. It’s going to be safe for any reason. But it happened the opposite.”

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is in fair condition at a Boston hospital. Investigators say he told them the brothers acted alone and set off the bombs, which killed three people and injured more than 200 on April 15, to defend Islam after the Afghanistan and Iraq wars.

The parents said Tamerlan Tsarnaev had not discussed the wars with them.

On Thursday, 31 marathon victims were still in the hospital, one in critical condition.

The mother of Boston Marathon bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev knew as early as 2011 that her son had been radicalized and sent text messages to family in Russia suggesting he was willing to die for Islam, the FBI told lawmakers this week according to two officials with knowledge of the Capitol Hill briefing.

Tsarnaev, who was killed days after the April 15 bombing in a shootout with police, is said to have embraced radical Islam in recent years and recruited his younger brother, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, to carry out the attack that killed three and wounded more than 180 near the finish line of the world's most prestigious road race.

I understand she is grieving but man....people need to stop interviewing her so she can process all this. But hey, it's good for ratings right?

nothing unusual for a mother to try and protect her children when in doubt.
and I bet it must be hella hard for her to even begin getting to terms with what happened.

Oh shut up you shop-lifting lunatic. You set an example of criminal behavior and extremist religion . . . what did you think would happen?

Not sure who I find more objectionable - this woman who is willingly ignoring the truth or the people who are interviewing her expecting any useful insight.

Heart breaking that she had to lose her son the way she did. They really need to let Dzokhar speak in public so that she can listen to his admission and move on and not get caught up with her own half-baked conspiracy theories.

The mother is misguided with her frustration.

Which is easy to do after you find out that your sons, one of whom is dead, are responsible for the loss of life and wounding of hundreds of others. I think the press should back off for a bit, here. I don't think she's responsible, in fact I'd reckon (based in my ignorance of her life) that she's also a victim of this tragedy.

Yeah, then it'll be that the us coerced her son to say that he did it

Imagine a world where a grief stricken mother has a hard time believing that her sons (allegedly) turned into a couple of terrorists that tried to kill as many people as they could.

It's not even close to outside the realm of possible that she would have an extremely difficult time excepting the truth. We should pity this woman given what we know now, not look down on her.

I really pity her and her situation. I can't imagine how much she is suffering losing both her children. But at the same time, like many other people have said, this seems to be the reality of things.

Admit your failure and move on.

Only if you admit a complete failure of empathy towards a woman in a horrendous situation.

I say let her wail and gnash her teeth. Let her scream and tear at her clothes till her energy is spent. There's little one can do to console a person in this sort of grief until they're ready to listen.

I realize that, th s me saying that pretty much anything we put in front of her won't sway her due to her current state.

Eh, we all make our messes.

As soon as she was on TV during the whole thing and started talking about them being frame I said they should stop interviewing her. Someone should probably to a professional for grief counseling.

in all fairness.. She hasn't been provided with any evidence that her sons are responsible. That would probably ease tension.

Unless she knew beforehand that her sons were going to attack the U.S. and according to FBI sources she knew exactly that in which case she is implicit.

I don't think you can write if off as part of the grieving process. Sounds like she was the worst kind of conspiracy theorist and a nutjob before.

I'm not surprised by this, she's obviously in shock and it isn't easy for her to accept that her sons did this.

even if they weren't involved with the bombing, they still killed a cop who was just chilling.
having not been keeping up with the story, but... 'protecting islam', what does bombing athletes achieve?

the brothers are boxers right? I always thought people that hit the gym have this unspoken bond, or that's how I feel at the gym :/

maybe i just don't get religions and terrorism.

She herself is on FBI and Russian watchlists.

If ture, then I have no sympathy for her whatsoever. And the father seems to be a straight up fucking idiot.

And this reminds me: The Mercedes guy who was carjacked? Shows that the younger brother was PROUD of what he did. No remorse, no fear.

I wouldn't admit that someone merely being on an FBI watch-list makes you unsympathetic toward that person.
