No movie ever makes money it seems...

Honestly, this movie will make money for years to come. Digital rentals...dvd/blu-ray...HBO...regular tv...and continued rentals and purchases will go on for years. There is no way to really put a value on what this movie made. A movie that made over 400 million world wide, even when most of that is in china (I guess they get a smaller piece of the pie compared to money made in America)...will end up making money unless the budget was actually 300 million or something.

I remember a thread here about Pacific Rim..and how people wanted to point out that studios only get half of the actual box office receipts and that it lost a lot of money...and that there would be no part two...at the end of the day if that movie had lost millions we would not be seeing a part two..

Unless the outfit in question is so desperate for a franchise that plays in China that they make a lower budget sequel to a film that is still in the red but had a solid showing at the Chinese box office.

It's telling that Warners aren't involved in the sequel at all leaving Legendary to self finance the film themselves.

The budget of the film does not include advertising which for a film of this size was no doubt pretty hefty, tens of millions of dollars. Not too mention I doubt Warcraft movie merchandise is flying off the shelves and a movie not doing great at the box office doesn't mean its going to become some big sales and cult hit on DVD/BR. That happened with Dredd but again, Dredd became a kind of cult classic movie. Warcraft does not have that same kind of appeal and I do not think it will develop it.

Well they were saying before release it needed to make $450 million or so to break even so this isn't too surprising.

I imagine any potential sequel would be made for a vastly smaller budget, with a different director and lots of Chinese tie-ins.

Because studios don't receive every dollar that gets spent at the theater. The theater takes a cut and in terms of international box office, that cut is even bigger. So here, you have a film that made a majority of its revenue from the international market, which means a decent portion of the revenue didn't go to the studio.

And in China studios take only 25% of the gross.

Thankfully, provided they made a second one, it would center on thrall, so hopefully it wouldn't cost nearly as much anyway I guess.

But no, highly doubt we'd see another one.

China is so important nowadays. I wonder if the Ghostbusters dude included a potential ban in China in their calculations.

Really wonder if the movie would have performed better, both critically and commercially, if the movie had been 100% cgi. As it stands, I didn't go and see it primarily because I thought the cgi orc/human actors looked completely ridiculous together. The orcs had the exagerrated features of blizzards style, while the humans just looked like scrawny kids compared to their blizzard cgi counterparts. Their babyface actors didn't help either.

If they had made a full CGI movie instead of using some real sets/costumes/actors, would that had reduced cost, or the other way around?

When Chinese companies help co finanace they will get more than the standard 25% in china. Legendary is now Chinese owned and the article said, "Three Chinese ventures put up the rest of the money; internet giant Tencent (15 percent), China Film Group (10 percent) and Huayi (5 percent), while China’s Taihe has a nominal stake." So they probably got more than 25%.
