FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- A 6-year-old boy is floating over northeastern Colorado in a homebuilt balloon and authorities are racing to try and rescue him.

The balloon, in the shape of a flying saucer is covered in foil and filled with helium. It has a compartment for a passenger underneath. It lifted the boy into the air near Fort Collins Thursday morning after the balloon became untethered at the boy's home.

I was just going to post this... was watching it online. The balloon is HAULING ASS.

I hope the kid is alright... they are saying it could reach 10,000 feet.

Sounds like an experiment gone wrong.

lol It looks like a UFO. Seriously, without the balloon captions on every news channel, at a decent zoom distance, it looks like a stereotypical ufo.

Holy fucking shit, this is the most insane news story i've seen all week :lol

solves most problems

other than that I hope he gets down safe and his mother locks him up for 2 weeks for being stupid

They really dont know what the aircraft is composed of, except that its covered in foil. Cant tell if its hot air balloon or some other helium powered craft. Family is calling it a homemade flying saucer.

Whats with the video for this story? Its like its automated or whoevers shooting is absolutely horrible at keeping the thing steady (get a fucking tripod!)

so this 6 year old boy just invented the technology that will take us to the edges of the universe out of tin foil?

wont be so funny when the balloon pops and he falls to his death.

This.

As a parent, I thought more about his safety than the comparisons to Pixar movies.

Do you mean the abc7 stream? I think they're just trying to find the kid to begin with...

The video from the OP link is hooked up to a helicopter and they lost the balloon already.

There was a time when I would be laughing out loud at this.

For some reason, this is horrific and not as funny as the headline made it out to be. Hope the kid gets down okay.

also, he better not be using a gameboy in that thing until he hits 10,000 feet.

You people find this funny? I'm fucking nervous as hell for the kid. He could very probably fall to his death.

Fucking unbelievable

This is still crazy to me.
HOW DID A 6 YEAR OLD KID DO THIS? Did his parents help make it? Jesus. Need more news.

Holy shit :lol

There was this sauce like thing that would appear in the stream. Though, now that I know its being shot from a helicopter, the constantly moving frame is understandable (although highly annoying).

this kid is as good as dead. i mean wtf could they do? helicopter is out of the question. it's going to loose air and plummet.

Another hot air balloon might do the trick. They could move up alongside him and scoop him up with it.

watching on msnbc. This is insane! I guess his dad was testing it with the boy inside at short hovering heights but didn't realize is wasn't tied to the ground..... wtf .... who just builds something like this in their backyard

I don't find it funny, to be honest I was in disbelief when I first saw the story I'll edit the original post. I figure his only hope is the balloon loses altitude slowly?

Well that's good and all, but maybe it's a GOOD thing for people to think happy thoughts instead of what could happen.

He didnt. His dad made it, and the kid just happened to hop in.

Couldnt they just use a helicopter with some sort of harness, and snag the balloon?

dude... this is really scary/awkward to watch- I don't want to see a six year old die right in front of me on live tv.....
