Kotono Mitsuishi (Usagi) confirms on her blog that she will be reprising her role in the new Sailor Moon series. She also adds that the enemy this time is not the Dark Kingdom.

Which basically means that this is probably going to be Season 6 or a side story.

This could be awsome...and i hope this means that they will finally re release the show on dvd in NA as well.

Funimation claim that they've been in discussion with the right's holders for 'years'.

Yeah, IIRC, they said Takeuchi/Kodansha/Toei were deliberately squashing any and all attempts to bring the show back in North America, because they want to control it and strategize it and ensure that it achieves maximum success when it eventually does happen. Don't ask them when that time will be, they'll tell us.

So to that end, they're going to... release Season 6 next summer in North America when Season 5 has never been made available. Brilliant!

At least the Kodansha USA manga might be finished by next summer, so there's that.

I can virtually guarantee you they won't be dubbing Sailor Moon in Toronto again.

Los Angeles would seem the most likely but I'd like to see what Vancouver would do with it seeing the success they've had owning the voicework for many other girl-focused franchises (My Little Pony, Barbie, Disney's Fairy line, Strawberry Shortcake, etc.) in recent years. Clearly a lot depends on who lands the license.

But that was simply for the Shabon Spray. Mercury Aqua Rhapsody and Shine Aqua Illusion are water-based attacks, though. Shabon Spray Freezing froze enemies. She's good at being a tactician and going through pre-planning sometimes, and she's good at chess!

Katie Griffin, Susan Roman, Stephanie Morgenstern, and Karen Bernstein were all great as the Inner Senshi. Just give them a good script and good director, and they'll be fine.

Ron Rubin was a good Artemis, but Jill Frappier was totally miscast as Luna.

Toby Proctor was my favorite Tux, but Vince Corazza was good too.

Ideally, I just want a good translation and good director (no Optimum Productions), and for the old cast to show up and audition for their former roles. If they can convince a good director that they can be good in a role, then their history with that role is a bonus. Hopefully they'd be able to record their lines in Toronto and email them to wherever. That's how Tara Strong (Los Angeles) is performing the lead role for MLP (Vancouver), and it's working out great.

Seriously. Even as some of my first exposure to dubbed anime, I could tell it had some subpar voice acting. It managed to pull off that cheesy charm well enough to save it from being a disaster, but I'd like to see a more solid effort this time around.

The S and SuperS episodes are stuff that I just can't watch in English at all since I'm used to the JP dub. I imagine that should I ever see an English version of Stars, I'll feel the same way. Having watch the other series in Japanese since then, I've come to prefer them because there are no cuts whatsoever.

Man, I love Stars.

I'm guessing that the upcoming series might be a way to achieve maximum success. I hope so. I'd pay a very high dollar amount for those remastered sets.

I genuinely believe Serena's dub VA was a great Sailor Moon. She was good at both sides of Usagi.

I'm in complete agreement.
And yet familiarity with the dub doesn't automatically mean one isn't familiar with the original Japanese language adaptation.
One can be intimately familiar with both products.

I say this as someone with most of the English VAs autographs, who snapped up fansubs of Sailor Moon S long before it aired on North American television, feels the SMS Movie just isn't the same without Han Keiko's Luna delivery and has had extensive in-person conversations regarding Sailor Moon with everyone from Roland Parliament to Akira Kamiya to Hitoshi Doi... amongst others.

The SMS and SuperS dubs were largely forgettable due to a rushed production schedule. I do believe John Stocker (aka Mr. Beastly) was capable of delivering better voice direction if afforded more time but that sadly wasn't the case.

And while I certainly sympathize with ruby_onix's take that the original dub VAs should be afforded the opportunity to revisit their roles, I'm not sure whether any of them are actively voice acting these days apart from Katie Griffin (although I have heard Jill Frappier and Vince Corazza turn up in The Dating Guy).

Frankly, I'd love to hear what Studio B / DHX Media would do with the show. Either one of Michelle Creber or Claire Corlett would make a fine Chibi-Usa.

I was first exposed to the DiC dub, but then I found a VHS fansub of the SMR Movie and it was positively glorious. I picked up the VKLL fansubs of the later seasons and even got the Studio C fansubs of the earlier ones.

The DiC dub... happened. The last 17 eps of SMR were dubbed terribly cheaply. The Pioneer dubs of the movies were probably the best dubs, followed by the Cartoon Network seasons, but they were both stuck in trying to be like the DiC dub.

If Funimation had been given the DVD rights to the series, I would have supported the series getting a full redub that had no ties to the DiC dub. If this announcement were for a reboot/remake of Sailor Moon, I'd support it having no ties to the DiC dub.

But if this is just a continuation of what we already have, then I think it's appropriate for it to have some ties to the past, even if the past is mostly regrettable. And I think the idea is "workable", if done right. It can be done better than Pioneer/Cartoon Network did.

Of course, if Funi drops a Bluray bomb on us in the form of a full series set with a new dub, then yeah, screw the DiC dub.

ADV released the censored TV dub of the first two seasons on single DVDs. Out of print and very expensive. There's no uncut version of this dub and there never will be.

ADV also released the uncensored subtitled version of the first two seasons in boxed sets. Out of print and very expensive. Also, one episode is missing, due to some sort of licensing refusal.

Pioneer released dual-language DVDs of seasons 3&4, both as single disks and then in box sets. Out of print and very expensive. The dub included in this release is visually uncut (unlike the censored TV airing).

Pioneer also released the three non-canon theatrical movies, dual language, both as single DVDs and then in a box. Out of print and very expensive. They're 4:3 instead of widescreen, but they're not pan-and-scan, they were animated in 4:3 with the intent to be seen in widescreen, so they're a bit of an oddity.

Season 5 was never released in America. Some TV specials were never released in America.


The absolute best way for an English speaker to watch Sailor Moon is (currently) in Japanese with English subtitles. Japanese is the superior option every step of the way. The only reason to look at the English dub is if you watched the censored version on TV and have some nostalgia for it.
