What's the dub situation? Is there a clear, available, reasonably way to watch the series, uncut, in English?

The dubs were edited to the point of butchery with good-decent-bad voice acting.
All the music was changed, entire scenes were cut or edited, and lots of overlayed transitions were used to cover the edited content.

I have a couple VHSes.

Uncut dubs don't exist. The ADV subs of Season 1 are your best bet, and they are $$$$$ now.

In the dub's defense, they did some damn good songs. Carry On is the ish, as was the new OP. Guitar solo!

In dub form? Hell no. Only Seasons 3 & 4 could technically be considered uncut in terms of content and even then you're still dealing with adaptation liberties like Haruka and Michir-... err, Amara and Michelle being kissing cousins.

When I saw the dubs, R was my favorite.
Subs, Stars.
Second view, S.
I don't have much love for Sailor Stars outside of the awesome themes.
Everything about it felt like a blatant rehash of storylines executed far better in previous seasons and it was effectively compressed into 28 total episodes.
It didn't help that Takeuchi's manga story arc for Stars seemed far superior to its anime counterpart.

I'm all about Sailor Moon S.

The Sailor Moon anime is more about antics than story anyway, and even as an S redux Stars delivers a set of really entertaining episodes.

Also, half of it is Minako, and after being starved for screentime in the first two series, they make up for that here.

Let me be the first one to say it.

I dont want it back.

Business here too fucked. TOO god damn fucked for its own good.

I mean i live in a world where My Little Pony is a fucking thing now.

No, not gonna succeed. Not now.

More Minako is never a bad thing. She's everyone's favorite nutbar.

Minako best girl.

Did MLP kill the new Thundercats or something? On that note, was the new Thundercats any good?

No. CN did. Dont get me started.

Just like Korra, hurt by its writing. MLP just eating the scraps of a dulled popluaice.

I'm puzzled how the success of MLP: Friendship is Magic impedes the success of other animated fare. Especially shows airing in different time slots on different networks that aren't The Hub.

Everything in Stars was great. Also had one of the best ending songs evur!!
I liked the first part of Stars but after the Sailor Starlights appeared, I felt the show started to become tedious. The Animates were awesome though, specially Aluminum Siren and Iron Mouse.

Speaking about Minako's craziness, she changed so much since the beginning. Her episode with the blood donation in S is one of my top 5.

There is no puzzle. Call it winning when everybody else cant reach their goals.

I dont want a another Mine situation with Sailor Moon. Hell, its 10 years too early for any sort of remake.

Oyoy.... I wish the nendroid in my avatar existed for real. Sooo love Mercury..
OH MY GOD. I just realized we could get sailor nendoroids out of this... I don't buy full-sized figures, but I would buy a full collection of senshi nendos in a heartbeat.

Edit:Novid, I am aware of the animation situation in America. There is NO REASON sailor moon can't be a resounding success right now. There is a gigantic merchandising boom (I see girls wearing tshirts all the time), new translations of the Manga and as a generation we are on a huge nostalgia kick. You also have guys more open to watching girly things like MLP.

The only thing that could kill it is if they ONLY air it on toonami or something dumb like that.

A part of me wants the story to actually take place 20 years later or something like that. There was a Chinese life-action spin off about what would happen if the Scouts (you heard me) had to get back into action years after having started family lives.

I never read the Stars manga, but I loved how tongue-in-cheek Stars anime was.

-Iron Mouse bailing during one of Usagi's speeches
-Ami being a Starlights fangirl
-Usagi freaking out over the love letter

Little stuff like that. Stars has its comedy gold moments. Every episode is great, and when it gets serious, it gets REAL.

Also, couldn't they get Ikuhara back?

I agree a future arc with the Senshi as parents would be perfect.

You have better hope to god the Hub gets Disney Channel Ratings in two years. Thats when the dub is going to be ready and brotha, there will be a dub. If they did it before (the anime boom along with DBZ), they will do it again but thats if only the HUB takes the dub and gets the ratings to go with it.

I hope they do this properly and don't just stream subs on funi's Site, but the hub will never ever get Disney ratings...

Man, I could see the hub getting the old series and airing it in a nostalgia block late at night, too...

Toei's probably going to make this extremely difficult. I just hope whoever has enough money for it treats it well.

Hasbro's ambition for The Hub is to be Cartoon Network size in ten years. lol at trying to becoming Disney Channel.

I was thinking this would be a good route to take it. If they went that way I wonder if there would be even a slight nod to PGSM, even though it is pretty different than the anime.

the only problem with sailor moon is that the cast is too big. with too many memorable and likable characters with their own interesting story and personality.

My top 3 (that changes all the time)

1. Venus

Venus is basically the better version of bunny. the scene when usagi asks her if she was the moon princess, after she (with her sailor v-outfit) saved the 4 other senshi was magic. sailor v <3

2. Saturn

Omg how great is saturn. the melancholy and sadness in her character gets me everytime. I also like her theme. And Sirento Waru.

3. Pluto

Most mature, elegant and stylish senshi. I also love senshis with a special weapon, her huge key-staff is just a notch worse than the awesome sense that saturn has

aaah fuck, i love them all.

Toei has always been its own worst enemy when it comes to fostering the success of Sailor Moon and its other properties. Does Cloverway still exist at all in some capacity?

I am so stoked for this. I remember watching the original anime in Japan and in the United States when I was younger. I've always preferred the Japanese version, but all in all, Sailor Moon is a cherished memory. I'm already amazed and pleased that they've been re-releasing the mangas with new covers by Naoko herself.

I hope they don't mess the new series up.

I think the japanese rights-holders want to distance themselves as much as possible from the old american translations...which is very silly, but whatever. I think they think they know what's best. Hopefully they'll at least listen to advice on how to market here.

They dont want to deal with ANY OF THEM. There goal has always been to talk to the biggest of the big but that never will go though.

Sigh I REALLY need to watch the original series someday, just for well err 'historical presence' (I forgot the words/proper term I was gonna use =_= )

Me too. That entire episode was so fantastic.

I liked the Queen Nehellenia Arc, and the last few episodes were really great, imo, even if they were sometimes downers. It's just too bad that Stars wasn't exactly like the manga, but I think it was still a good season. S and Stars are currently my favourites, but I should do a rewatch one of these days to see if that opinion holds.

You have good taste.

More people need to get acquainted with the original version. It's nice that so many watched the dub on tv, but this is one case where it really isn't an equivalent product.

I'm so happy that during the early years anime in Polish TV weren't dubbed (they are now unfortunately :/), there was only a voice over. While still kind of annoying, it was much better than dubbing, because you could still hear original voices. And the opening themes weren't butchered.

What were the differences between manga and anime? I read the manga long time ago and can't remember a thing from the Stars part.
I guess I'll spoiler tag the whole thing since some people didn't see the Stars arc or the whole series yet.

The Starlights weren't leads. They were females posing as a male pop idol group in the manga as opposed to being men when they weren't Sailor Senshi (which is what the anime put forth).

the Senshi died throughout the duration of the manga as opposed to the anime where they died within the last few episodes. The Sailor Starlights also die in the manga, but in the anime they live.

Princess Kakyuu is revealed to be a Sailor Soldier. Sailor Chi, Sailor Mnemosyne, Sailor Phi, and Sailor Lethe don't appear in the anime. The Sailor Quartet (the Amazoness Quartet--Sailor Juno, Sailor Ceres, Sailor Pallas, and Sailor Vesta) were supposed to serve as Sailor Chibi Moon's bodyguards.

The Galaxy Cauldron doesn't play a role in the anime. It's basically where everything comes from. It was infected with Chaos and Sailor Moon decides to throw herself in it because she didn't want to destroy it since it would end all life. Guardian Cosmos also resided in here.

Chibi Chibi is revealed to be Sailor Cosmos in the manga.

Galaxia's bracelets shatter as a result of Sailor Moon's will based on purity and love, and this kills her.

Usagi marries Mamoru at the end of the manga.

There's probably a lot of other stuff, but those are generally the bigger differences to me.

Thanks. I seriously didn't remember any of this o_O
Will have to reread the manga some day.

:o missing out. Also the little fact that Chibi's
attacks aren't weak like in the anime which was done for comedy purposes and that she has another transformation ;)

You know, it's funny about Sailor Moon. I've seen the original series in all it's original uncut glory pretty extensively, but whenever I get the nostalgia tick to revisit the show, I always go back to that 1995 syndication version, electronic guitars and glitter and all.

I can still sing the intro song for the American English version right now from memory

Oh god, I hope nobody I know IRL is reads this and realizes they know who I am
