Bungie defends Destiny: The Taken King's £/$40 price tag (Eurogamer)

I personally feel that they aren't charging a monthly fee because they couldn't charge with the amount of content in the game. On the other hand when you have tons of people admitting that they've played the same 10 hours of content plus the raids over and over and over and over again with the different classes (that play exactly the same outside of the raid) it makes me think that maybe Activision COULD charge.

I think honestly Bungie has been really scared for the past year. They only share the minimum amount, and only when they have to. Compared to Blizz, who share philosophy on every patch note, have public test realms where they try stuff and then even reverse decisions and explain it all. That's what I want from Bungie. And the crazy thing is, it's free! It just take some bravery.

The Luke Smith interview is exactly like this DeeJ tweet:
twidiot.jpg

A little goodwill and a benefit of the doubt would show that these comments aren't nearly as bad as they appear on the surface. But they're revealing for just how little goodwill that players and the wider gaming audience have for Destiny/Bungie. This much anger after the improvements in House of Wolves shows just how much Bungie is up against.

I hope they are brave, even with all this anger. Destiny's community is one of the best I've ever seen for a game. People are angry because they want to like Destiny, just sometimes it's hard.

Yeah the thing is Bungie seems to have a disturbing trend of blaming their consumers and players for the issues. Maybe you just have terrible PR and communication with us?

Here's the thing. Bungie is the one who put us in this situation. They're the one's who said new Expansion $40/$80 with emotes. But they won't tell us everything else. They won't say what's in the expansion beyond a raid and some new PvP modes. Just "we're really confident in what we're putting in there. We're now accepting preorders." They won't tell us if actually everybody gets new emotes in the expansion, but these are just a few special ones. They won't even show us the emotes.

Bungie whiffed HARD on the lead-up to The Dark Below. The whole "commendations gating" and "re-level your exotics with Xur picking which you can" came out of a print interview and everybody was shocked and angry. DeeJ was seemingly dismissive and then wound up apologizing. They had an emergency blog post detailing the changes.

House of Wolves was totally different. They had twitch reveals, developer interviews, it was fantastic.

The Taken King is another Dark Below it seems. A price is announced before content. Bundles are really punitive to Year 1 players. And Bungie keeps putting their foot in their mouth about it.

Destiny's biggest problem in my opinion hasn't been Bungie listening to us. It's obvious that they do. They're on GAF. They're on reddit. They've made big changes. Destiny's biggest problem is Bungie communicating with us.

I really am afraid that Bungie is going to clam up even more because of this. We need Bungie to talk and not be afraid of being open. Being open is risky, and it's easy when there's good will. They need to work on establishing good will again.
Been saying this:

I'd argue even the HoW reveal was still a misstep since they lead with "No Raid, but you'll get this other thing that we won't detail until last! Please be excited!". The fact that they're going to sit on this until Thursday just so they can have something meaningful to say in the Update shows they haven't learned much.

Honestly, I'm surprised they put Luke on the PR train. I love the dude (longtime fan of the GFWLive/1up days) but his particular personality is WAY better suited to a casual podcast type setting (like the GiantBomb interview), not a restricted PR print interview where he is MOST DEFINITELY not going to come across as intended.

You mean it´s telling that the ones defending the game are also the ones actually playing it?

It´s also quite telling that most of the shit post start with something like "glad I never bought this" or "so happy I sold this shit right after it came out", but maybe that´s just me.
I've put in 14 days of this game and believe this is stupid beyond belief. The destiny thread is nothing but circle jerking this game and thinking poe is actually worthwhile especially with its shitty rewards with skolas. Anyone who plays this game knows that all the poe weapons are garbage beyond belief.

So...

Are they advocating that I trade my current Destiny game for the updated one? to pay the difference?Because that's the only way I could justify this

Combine the weekly updates with the Bungie podcast. Luke, urk, and Deej as the hosts with special guests talking about the same things as the weekly update always has, make it a shortened format of 30mins.

I miss the podcasts, and DeeJ is far more digestible when he's not allowed to write things down. Luke is always fun to watch/listen to in the ViDocs, and I miss the sultry tones of urk.

Make it happen, Bungie. You "owe" us.

I'm surprised that they're just waiting until the Weekly Update on Thursday to address this whole situation. This is only going to pick up more steam in the press the longer they wait. I've already seen way more articles regarding the interview today. Bungie should really just put out a blog post on bnet ASAP.

I bet if they recorded the interview and showed Luke's intonation and inflection whilst speaking there wouldn't be as much of an up-roar. :/

I'm not so sure, good natured chatting between former colleagues rarely comes across to the subjects of the conversation well especially when that conversation is 'Hey this seems like bad value'. Folks complain about how robotic interviewees can be but when you're dealing with a bad PR situation then you have to don serious face and say stuff like 'we appreciate many of our customers feel that...blah...blah....provide more value than ever..blah...blah...<concrete examples of having listened>....blah...blah...<concrete example of how that's influenced the upcoming product>'.

In other words recognise that when you're talking to the press in an on the record capacity you are taking to your customers. If you seem to dismiss their concerns or avoid the question it looks awful every time and if printed in text your natural charm and warm smile simply can't be transcribed onto the page.

Its a no win any post in gaming has drive by shit posts that destiny sucks. Poe is fun, most of the static weapons are not very good but It depends on the weapon but not all of them are garbage.

I don't even engage in that community often, but there are plenty of people who don't "circle jerk" the game.

I guess I see the value conversation differently because I've spent like 300 hours with the game and it's brought me more enjoyment than just about anything else over the past year (despite the many, many issues we've all gone through). Considering there's no monthly fee, I feel like I've gotten a pretty good deal!

Considering how nightfalls/dailies and other content is basically locked behind the "expansions" you ARE paying a monthly fee to play the game. If I buy the Taken King I will have spent $140 in one year. Let's not kid ourselves

Well I do think they have a direct channel with the public (the Weekly Update) then they needs to stop to talk outside it and just use the Weekly for that.

There would be more. He's clearly being light hearted throughout. This is one of the problems. He was just ignoring peoples concerns and taking the piss out of them for asking those questions.

Maybe your PR manager should be some who...manages these things?

Keep giving this company your money and expect more shit like this in the future, i bought and beat Destiny last year, once i realised it was thin as air in actual content i moved on.

I'm afraid of millions of gamers paying for stuff like this and sending the message to the industry that it's cool to do shit like this and seeing more games go this route.

This has been a crazy gen in terms of how reviwers/gamers value the games they play. To me, Destiny is everything that i don't want from the industry in terms of value and content.

I'm not a fan of most of those second perks but they are pretty good especially with the captain perks.

Wait 'shank burn' is a thing? Bloody hell.

I got the Baby's First Sidearm there and thought the Fallen/Captain perks made sense but a Shank burn? Maybe they're taking a cue from Portal 2 and there's a secret room with a 100 shank choir serenading the Queen Shank!

Edit: Damn your speed and wit EL CUCO!!!! :D

That was such am embarrassing and egotistical excuse. It honestly makes me furious despite not having played Destiny in many months. The value is absolutely terrible.

So, here's the thing - this dude was totally down to earth and honest about Destiny's faults when on the Giantbomb E3 show. Like, shockingly so.

It's like reading an entirely different person talking about the game.

Not really.

I'm an active part of that community which is for the most part, pretty awesome.

Yet here i am tearing Bungie apart for their shit in this very thread too.

Hell even GlamFM who is one of the biggest defenders of the game on the gaming side is bringng up negative points.

Well he totally dodged it when i gave him the GBP > USD conversion, after saying he didn't know about the currencies.

Defending the game is one thing, but ignoring the facts is another.

I put a fair bit of time into the game stopping just short of the second expansion

And I think it's abysmal that they charged so much for such little content historically

I really doubt the new dlc will buck the trend and be worth what is close to the cost of a newish game

They put shank burn on a rocket launcher as well. The fallen captain perk was garbage. Friend leveled up a gun unloaded 2 clips into the captain and had the perk trigger once. The only perk they should've made they didn't (Servitor Burn).

Same here. Regardless of how fun some aspects of Destiny are, the practices behind the game are something I cannot support out of principle.

man what a terrible interview. Destiny has great mechanics but I hate the systems in the game, and the fact that they apparently cut all of the DLC stuff out of the game, then include for DLC that isn't part of the seasons pass - and charge full price?!?! ridiculous

I wonder what "better" stuff they're going to show us day one guardians. My moneys on a slightly varied version of the shaders and class items, and maybe our own set of emotes? Lol. What a mess. Hell, at this point I'd settle for a fuck ton of weapon parts. Allow me to ascend all my exotics and reroll to my hearts content and I'll call it even
jk

This thread itself is full of people angry about

- Luke's attitude
- currency differences
- not getting new emotes
- the 40 dollars pricepoint compared to the 60 dollars they spent on the base game
- Destiny in general
-Expansion gate locking from weeklies, nightfalls etc

Of those, the differences in currency conversions are probably discussed the least, and easily the most justified.

Great concise post.
Added in the bold for myself.

I'm sure I'm screwed out of Destiny activities if I don't pick up the Taken King
and next two expansions at a total of $100+ when converted from £'s.

Bad JuJu with auto reload on kills and wolfpack rounds.

The Powa.

Cool. It's not enough to let us know how much you hate Destiny, so feel free to tear down the community as well. Let it all out.

The backlash that this game gets by people is so intense. I don't really see that in the game, I just play PVP a few hours a week and each time I am having a blast. And this is playing with strangers!

This isn't responding to the interview, or their pricing strategy, but the general drive-by posts that shit on the game.

Fuck the UK price but the Luke Smith hate is ridiculous. Watch any video interview with the guy, to see his personality and mannerisms, then read the Eurogamer piece again and it will come across totally differently.

I don't get how people can claim the value just isn't there while also saying they have played the game for hundreds of hours.

How do you measure value?

Anyone? I'm in the US if that matters.

Someone correct me if wrong.

1: purchase season pass now, taken king anytime through launch. Access dlc 1+2 now. $35+$40

2:purchase taken king legendary edition at launch. Gain access to all content in september. $60

3: purchase collector's edition digitally now (ps4/xb1 only right now?). Gain access to dlc 1+2 now, can sell original disc if that's what you had, get taken king this september, get the extras like emotes and a shader. $80

This is the opposite of what the DGAF thread is like.... Thanks for trashing us.

Great developer gets in bed with greedy publisher. Corruption ensues. Sleazy answers in my opinion, they might as well just say the data shows we can get away with charging this much so why not?

My problem is this has been bastardised into some shit about emotes instead of you know, the tons we UK guys have to pay.

I don't get how people can claim the value just isn't there while also saying they have played the game for hundreds of hours.

How do you measure value?

I played Destiny for around 200-300 hours prior to the first expansion dropping. I was lucky enough to hit 30 and did HM VoG out of habit, wanting to collect weapons that I rarely got [thanks RNGesus], and eventually figured I'd get another Warlock up to 20 so I could play VoG over again for more chances to get more drops.

Around this time, I realized I was playing against a slot machine that took time instead of quarters. Most of my clears had me swimming in those shards. However, the folks I'd play with were cool. Without them, I would've stopped long before I hit the 100 hour mark. The treadmill was real, and it didn't help VoG was kinda easy to me pre-'patch'.

I put the game down when a group of mine managed to clear all the way to the final boss of VoG without a death. But then the boss glitched. Then Bungie released some statement about how some mechanic with the final boss was actually a glitch while ignoring the fact that not dying in the instance screwed up the boss completely. That was my final straw. Such good shooting and visuals are wasted on Destiny.

To me, value is more than how many hours you put in a game - it's about how many of those hours you can remember without regret. I ended up putting the same amount of time into Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, and I'm just over halfway done with the game. I can look at MH4U and say that it's a game with tons of value due to the hours I put into it.

I think it's due to the linear progression MH4U has that goes off into space, whereas Destiny's progression was padded out by mostly RNG and encumbered by repetitive missions. At least with MH4, I got new monsters and environments up the wazzo, and gradually increasing challenges like fighting multiple monsters at one time. This is on top of there being like four or five separate campaigns between online and offline play.
