Call of Duty: Black Ops site live, game releases Nov 9th

Unless this receives universal critical acclaim, I'll be passing. WaW was definitely competent but had no long term appeal as I wasn't into the multiplayer.

I'll dare to state that I liked WaW better than MW2, well at least I played it more. Freeze-framing the trailer looking at some awesome set-pieces I'm still thrilled to jump back in. Treyarch got too much hate IMO for WaW and I will certainly try out their latest product.

Real co-op: Gears of War 1/2. Halo 3/ODST. Left 4 Dead.

Fake co-op: Fable 2, CoD:W@W. MW2: Spec Ops (except the AC-130 level and the Helicopter level). Maybe Splinter Cell: Convinction if you listen to Giantbomb's latest podcast.

Exactly how the fuck is co-op in Gears any different to co-op in WaW? Oh, you have to select a path which is just a few feet away from the other? Please.

Halo3 and L4D are in no way different either.

looks more interesting than anything I've seen from Reach. At 60 fps, this game should look stellar in motion.

You should know better than to insult HaloGaf specially at a time like this where some folks are feeling bad about the beta.

60fps is great though, but Halo 3 was my favorite co op experience this gen.

I think there's plenty we can infer from what has been shown so far. The Gametrailers video has the following text: "Witness and partake in the birth of Special Forces", which is pretty straightforward.

The US Special Forces were created in 1952 and the British Commandos before that. Wikipedia says that US Special Forces did not participate in the Korean War, but since we "partake in the birth" and experiences from that war helped create the team, the Korean War seems a safe bet.

The SR-71 wasn't created until the mid-to-late 60s, but Wikipedia again says that US Special Forces took part in the war in Vietnam in 1961 and 1963.

Someone mentioned the helicopter looked like a Cobra, which seems to have been introduced in 1967.

So we have a range from 1950-1970 easily covered there. I bet the "dark room" is one of the player characters being tortured for information, which then shows the first few levels in flashbacks, is then rescued (or breaks out) to "present day" (maybe 1970s) and a few more levels after that.

hm?

If the campaign is all over the place then how the heck are they gonna do the MP? You can't have modern weapons against WWII weapons. I need to see something about MP soon.

Why not? It all comes down to the balancing. They don't have to make the modern weapons ridiculously strong.
And automatic vs. semi-automatic worked out fine in CoD2 (see Garand vs. MP44)

One map set in the 1950s with 1950s weapons. The next map set in 1965 with 1965 weapons. Simple. Disable unlocked weapons if need be (or set alts if selected due to class).

Or, like NIN90 said, just because weapons are newer doesn't mean they're better.

Ehhh, not really. Say if you make all your weapon loadouts ww2. Then when it goes to a 60's map, you cant play?

I never suggested such a thing.

Edit: MW2 has people using AK-47s (1949) against M4A1s (1997) and L86 LSWs (1978ish) and no one complains. Who cares if you end up with a 1990s weapon in a 1960s Vietnam setting in multiplayer?

Same here. The things I disliked about WaW were carried over from MW1. I don't know why people blame Treyarch for issues that Infinity Ward introduced.

It would be cool if they went back to "oldschool" classes like in the older games. Like if you were to pick "sniper" and the level was Vietnam you'd get a pick of snipers from that era such as the M21, M16 w/scope, SVD, etc. Something tells me the create a class will return as it was in WaW and the maps won't feature their own time periods (with their weapons/tech of course) as awesome as that would be. :( It will all be present day with the old weapons included (like Bad Company 2's bonus WWII weapons).

They could have slots dedicated to specific era weapons within which you could only select those weapons. Also default sets that cover all the eras which cannot be edited.

Looking forward to this.

The ingame peeks are great, I love the setting. Hopefully there will be the Cuba crisis in it :)

Actually I will play some MP hours in WaW this weekend. Enjoy :P

I don't think the game will go much past Vietnam era, from what I remember reading about the "next call of duty" prior to this annoucement. Hell, with the legal battle going on and the "agreement" of whatever type regarding no studio other than IW developing post-Vietnam era Call of Duty games, 1990s and more modern weapons probably won't be an issue.

Looks interesting, will give it a rent and play the campaign, I find all COD campaigns to be fun, this looks no different.

My experience of WaW was:

single player level design was cheap so that enemies always spawn behind my back where they weren't 2 seconds ago; typical throw tons of shit to raise difficulty like Bioshock 2.

WW2 weapons suck especially compared to MW, MW2 weapons; I feel sorry for WW2 vets.

Nzi Zombie mode was awesome and I want more of it; a lot of it.

MP44, Garand, Kar98k > any weapon in MW1 or MW2

The trailer looked pretty damn good. This + Medal of Honor + Halo: Reach + Crysis 2 = shooter year of the forever.

I'm glad that Treyarch are taking the series in a new direction. I think the reason they did a WW2 game was two-fold - first, they wanted to rectify the development hell that was COD3. Second, they wanted to give the WW2 setting its final swan song before they moved on. I think they accomplished both with World at War, so they've earned my trust in Black Ops.

It'll be interesting how they blend the old technology from the 50s with the newer technology from today (assuming they stretch the time-line that far). I like the idea of getting to use older bolt action weapons with M4A1s. While it would seem strange, I think it ties in with the whole idea of a 'black ops' unit - they pretty much get to use whatever shit they want, like how Shepard wielded a .44 in MW2.

Don't forget the Gewehr '43 - zero recoil. :D

Lol at people thinking that Treyarch is going to avoid various time specific weapons being used at one.

THEY PUT RED DOT SIGHTS AND ACOG SCOPES ON WW2 WEAPONS.

OF COURSE YOU'RE GOING TO END UP WITH 60S WEAPONS BEING USED ALONGSIDE 80S.

Also I have doubts about the whole Korea thing. They're going to end up doing three campaigns lke the oldschool CODs and WaW, and most likely we already know the locations.

Also, in the beginning of the trailer you can see various digits that say 2010:0112.

So I'm pretty sure it's present day.

Where can I read his old stuff?

GameTrailers.com currently has the most intrusive popup ad I've ever seen. The whole screen is covered by this stupid ad and I can't even find a way to close it. Just, wow.

Kinda liked what I've seen in the pop block. Hope they do some pretty awesome things with it. Also, it seems like Treyarch loves to put more gore in their games.

Thanks for the link. Glad that gametrailers did this because the images come at you so fast in the trailer it's hard to soak it all in. As much as I dislike Activision, this game is looking pretty sweet. Interesting time period too. And according to the pop-block you use a light machine gun first introduced in the late 70's. So there'll be somewhat modern weaponry.

Excited to see how this turns out. After W@W, I have far more faith in Treyarch than Infinity Ward.

My thoughts exactly.

IW fucked up big time with MW2
imo

WaW was leaps and bounds more balanced and playable.

Such an awesome plane for it's time with iconic shaping. It's on my top ten list of favorite planes. Top of that list is still the A-10 though, followed by the P-51.
You have good taste J. Add the B1B Lancer to that list for me

WaW was so good. The brutal and grotesque side of war was very well presented. It felt so haunted with corpses hanging from trees, especially when that creepy background music that sounded like a distorted 'crying' started playing. It felt ugly, intimidating and scary.

reading the wikipedi stuff on that plane it sounds bananas.

i reckon it will somehow go wrong (none were ever shot down) and show the guy having to eject into 250C fireball and freefall from the edge of the atmosphere until they cool down enough to open their parachute, then the game will be going to rescue that guy.(basically a massive cock tease like the space section in cod42)
