Can a proper gamer ignore Nintendo games?

Let my state upfront that I am a Nintendo fan.

At the beginning of this generation, I knew it would be important to have a system other than the Wii to experience all that this generation had to offer. I am a gamer first, and a Nintendo fan second. So I bought a PS3. I have played a wide variety of titles for the Wii, DS, PS3, and PC. A 360 would have been great as well, I just decided to go with the PS3. This topic is not to discuss the merits of PSWii vs. Wii60.

I have found that owning one of the HD twins and a Wii (also DS) affords me a variety of gaming experiences. I love running around in Super Mario Galaxy just as much as hunting splicers in Bioshock. I enjoy questing in Fallout 3 for an hour, and then joining friends for a few rounds of Brawl.

I believe games on Nintendo systems and games not found on Nintendo systems are both important for any well rounded gamer to play. While I think the majority would agree with me that a Nintendo fan should play non-Nintendo games, I don't know that many consider playing Nintendo games a prerequisite for being a seasoned gamer. What say you Gaf, can a proper gamer ignore Nintendo games? Or should gamers be expected to play Nintendo games?

Nintendo games truly are overal classics, I can't deny them and I hate most games. From Super Metroid to Wind Waker, I love Nintendo's first party development stuff

I don't think so, as much as I prefer the xbox this gen over the wii, nintendo games are like gaming DNA injected right into your veins, I wouldn't want to lose my crackdowns and halos, but nintendo stuff is more likely to become 'best ever' than to be average, imo.

Noone should be expected to play any system or publishers games "proper", "hardcore", "core", "casual", "alpha" or whater label you want to create.

Nintendork22, you don't say.

The wii is the first nintendo system I've never owned. Wiiu will likely be the second. So yes, I ignore them.

Can one? Sure.

Should one? Well that's up to them. If you don't like them, you don't like them.

But you're no "more" of a gamer for ignoring them, which is definitely a thing some people believe.

I think it's an unwritten rule that proper ("core") gamers probably already experience Nintendo products without being told by other gamers.

They make some of the best games ever. Especially now. Many other companies are focusing on "immersion" or "cinematic experiences", but Nintendo delivers in actually making fun games that aren't full of themselves. They're just full of fun.

I can only think of the stereotype that assume Nintendo is "kiddy" as the only group to ignore all of their games.

I don't understand why someone who considers themselves a gamer would want to ignore Nintendo games. Despite them being overall pricks right now, they do manage to release quality games when they actually care to. Super Mario Galaxy 2 is considered one of the best games of this generation.

They can, but if somebody is acting snobby about video games in some way and they say they don't play Nintendo games, I laugh and secretly look down my big nose at them because I can do that

Yes.

Oh, so is this a "WHY DOES EVERYONE HATE NINTENDO!?" thread, a rage thread about NoA's localization practices, or what? I'm not too sure.

exactly what I was going to say.

Personally I have lost almost all interest in Nintendo's games as they have not really evolved as much as I would like. I'd really like to see them truly shake up some of their franchises.

I have begun to really be drawn to narrative in games, and Nintendo's games are almost complete devoid of this.

I have no desire to ever play another mario kart or zelda game in their current form..

It didn't help that the Wii was the only console since the Jaguar that I truly hated. Waggle gaming needs to die in a chemical fire.

I sold my Wii early on, but I kinda wish I saved it for NSMB Wii and Galaxy 2.

Yeah, as someone who dumped their Nintendo console early this gen, I will say that I kinda missed 1st party stuff. I hope the Wii U works out for me.

A lot of nintendo franchises... if you've played one in the franchise, you've pretty much gotten a taste of what they're all like. It's probably important for gamers to at least try a mario or a zelda etc. once. But each new game? I don't think so.

yes, 1986 is over, there are other systems now and as good as some nintendo games are, they're not super innovative or anything to force you to buy a system for the game.

They're nintendo games and you know exactly what you'll get. Each title has its formula that it sticks to.

I have been ignoring Nintendo games since about 4 months after the Wii launched.

I am tired to death of their franchises, I don't care for handhelds and whenever I try a Wii game at my sister's house I am always underwhelmed.

I would consider myself quite the proper gamer. 360, PS3, Move, Kinect, sweet gaming PC and iPad. I play all of them happily.

Nintendo can go and take a leap. And I say that with all due respect, as I loved my NES and SNES. But...yeah..I play what I want to play and I can't remember the last Nintendo game I wanted to play.

Cinematic games cannot be fun? Videogames can be full of themselves?

Nintendo games are humble, while all the other games are full of themselves.

Though there are a few Wii games I'd like to play, I've never owned a Wii and don't really feel the need to.

I am still as much of a gamer now as I was when I did play on a Nintendo console.

Though I've gone back and forth on the topic many times, I have not been able to talk myself into buying a Wii.

Sure, there are a handful of games for the system that I'd really like to play, but between the HD twins and PC my backlog is a bloated mess.

I know this makes me sound shallow, but if Wii was an HD console, I know I would have purchased one years ago.

Calling someone a "proper gamer" is as bad as calling someone a "true gamer", something that was a hot topic on neogaf just last week. So, no, you can be a "proper gamer" without playing Nintendo-games.

Now, if you ask me how I personally feel about people that ignore Nintendo-games, then yes, I would absolutely say that they are missing out on a large part of this industry´s best games. Maybe I would also think of such people as immature, for only playing *realistic* games and lacking the ability to enjoy imaginative games. But that would be my very subjective opinion, and would have no relation to someone being "proper gamer" or not.

Video games are a form of entertainment; any game that adds to your enjoyment is a proper videogame, Nintendo or not.

That having been said, omitting Nintendo from your digital diet might also deprive you of essential vitamins(Zelda), minerals(Mario), and antioxidants(Metroid) not to be found elsewhere...again, it all depends on the individual's particular needs.

Yep, exactly what I was going to say. Though there isn't such a thing as a "proper gamer", is there? What's an "improper gamer"?

Despite that, I think that many people who play games have been exposed to a Nintendo game at some point in their lives. Not all, but many.

I guess, to put it simply, I have to own a Nintendo system. I love their games a lot and without Nintendo in this industry, I wouldn't play half the games I do today.

But with that said, I always liked to own another console to complement it. This generation, I picked the PS3. Part of it had to do how I liked the PSOne and PS2. Part of it had to do with the fact it has a Blu-Ray player (which is the main reason honestly). While there are a few 360 games I wanted to play, I just didn't have the money (at the time, I was a poor college student) or time (which is the problem today, being a nursing home adminstrator takes a good bit of my time really).

I don't know which console I'll buy next time around from Sony or MS, but I do know I will own a WiiU day one. I always get my money's worth from Nintendo, even if they do piss me off once in a while (Here's another fuck you, NOA!)

EDIT: Actually, with the next round of consoles from MS and Sony, I'm more likely to wait a couple of years for a price drop and a bigger library.

Honestly, no, they shouldn't. EAD, Retro, even the second-party studios like AlphaDream and Intelligent Systems. They all make games that simply outclass any other console game out there.

doesn't seem quite rational to actively avoid something just because of the nintendo label but it's not like every gamer has played every game so I don't see why it would stop you from being a proper gamer whatever the fuck that is

What is being a gamer supposed to mean? Anyone can be fully entertained while not playing games from multiple systems.

Other than console Mario and Zelda games Nintendo doesn't offer much you'd consider instant classics. A lot of people didn't play Ico last generation, or Suikoden II the one before that. No one asks if they're "proper" gamers. You don't have to play every top tier game to be a "proper" gamer so missing out on the half dozen or less that Nintendo puts out in a generation isn't that big a deal to miss out on.
