There is no hardcore list without demon souls.

I've been a huge fan of Nintendo since 1985 (owned the NES, SNES, N64 and GC all on day 1), but this is the first generation in which I do not own a Nintendo system. Times are hard, and I just can't justify paying over $200 to play a small handful of Nintendo games.

No they missing out on good games for silly reasons, Big N have the best 1st party games of all the big three

Well, Sony also has nice things on offer, just of a completely different variety.
Plus there is SuperMeatBoy, which by the stars, Nintendo should have made. At least they made NSMB:Wii, though completely failed to acknowledge the massive sales push it gave.
Also, Other-M is first party too. Just saying.

lol i basically ignored Nintendo games all through the PS1 era due to money reasons yet still enjoyed gaming. Unfortunately my wallet does determine my gamer authenticity.

I've done everything on that list. However, I've never played one of those old LucasArts SCUMM Adventure games, like Full Throttle, or Secret of Monkey Island. I have a feeling someone would still say I'm not a proper gamer.

And that's just the point. Everyone's got such a different idea of what constitutes a "proper gamer", that there's no way there can be one definition. It's the same for any other medium.

If anything, my definition of a "proper gamer" is anyone who is able to properly articulate why they love the games they do, while keeping an open mind to other genres. They don't have to have played any specific games, simply being knowledgeable about what's out there is enough.

Yes if said games are stuck on a system like the Wii.

No if those games are available on a system like the 360/PS3 which is hopefully what the Wii U is.

Only one I haven't done, although I'm not big on story in games so that's not going to change...

Oh god the list..

Being able to tick off that list means very little. Also I could make a list that easily outnerds that one. Showing some real gaps in your proper gamer knowledge there!

A "proper gamer" plays whatever the hell he or she enjoys.
My 38 year old soccer mom sister enjoys playing Farmville twice a week on her Facebook page, she hasn't touched a Wii or played any of the current consoles before. She also considered a proper gamer?

This is what it sounds like when doves cry.

Ah fuck, now you've got that synth melody in my head.

Then my work here is done.

I did some digging and found my post from about a year back in a 'Games you consider "required reading"' topic. I wouldn't edit it much, although the intention of my list was alwalys an illustration of my own perspective rather than any sort of "qualification" checklist.

So, Gravijah, are the Outrun 2 SP cabinets really as good as you say?

Nintendo makes some of the greatest and most unique games each generation which can not be found on other systems.

And a proper gamer can of course ignore them.

I feel like nintendork is that kid we jokingly suggested that he should totally make video reviews about why Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagan is not "true mecha" and then he actually does it and does not get why we are all laughing*

Whaaaaaaa? I need to see this.

Yes they can.

And they always regret it a few years later, especially when people are talking about certain games as true classics and the best of the best for certain generations.

Personally I still have all Nintendo consoles. All Sony consoles. But not all Sega consoles... And today I really really hate that.

Reason: I didn't have enough money during that generation, which simply turned me into a PS-fanboy.

And I'm guessing that the same goes for at least some of the people that "choose" to ignore Nintendo systems today. It's a money issue. You can't deny that it's quite expensive to have them all. You have to buy games too. And controllers. And cables. Etc.

Right now I'm going Wii-PS3, since my 360 finally got rrod, and I'm quite happy about that. Less games to buy.

Yes. Times infinity.

She's a gamer, sure. Proper gamer is a silly term.

I got turned off with the gimmicky motion controls. Wii was the first Nintendo console I haven't owned, and it's a shame. Looks like I'll be skipping the Wii U aswell.

Yup, easily. I admire what they do but it just doesn't float my boat. The fact that they focus on the same 4 or 5 franchises every gen for the last 20 years makes it easy for me to ignore them.

I did enjoy a lot of SSBM back in the GCN days though.

well Sony had to get better first party games with all they best game from PS2 days being third party going PS360 where as Big N always had a good first party line up.

not saying it all good

Slightly fixed to accurately describe my own nintendo-experience.

Just as a Nintendo gamer could have not purchased the PS2 and missed out on titles like ZOE 2, ICO, Shadow the Colossus, etc. If you don't own all the systems, you will definitely miss out on gems... and to be honest, I'm perfectly fine with missing out on a few.

For me Nintendo IS gaming. Everything else is just extras

I have a ps3+360 also not to miss out on the best stuff there (Uncharted, Mass Effect) but I could see myself not buying a MS/Sony console actually.

Nintendo however, i could never skip. Their big releases are just in a whole other league than what Sony and MS offer imo

I dont know what a proper gamer is but no, i dont see how a gaming enthusiast can completely ignore games from one of the biggest, oldest and most influential companies in the world.

And its not like their games are all simillar enough to just pass them all completely.

This too

I would imagine that someone who enjoys gaming could still skip out on Nintendo's games.

I skip out on tons of games that people consider AAA, but I wouldn't play for free: RPGs, dual-stick shooters, story-centric games like MGS, etc.

Nintendo is my favorite development house for their Mario platformers, Kart, Smash Bros., Pikmin, Fire Emblem, Advance Wars, and all sorts of wacky stuff they put out. But I still skip out on Zelda and Metroid because I find "exploration" (read: lots of walking) and any game that requires GameFAQs to be rather boring.

I honestly dont think nintendo is all that relevant any more. When they are not super casual, i get the feeling they mostly pander to nostalgia.

Their new games rarely have that sense excellence they did pre gamecube.

I haven't played most of the key Nintendo games this gen. I didn't have a Wii, but I'm going to catch up. Don't know if that answers your question.
