Pretty much ignored them this entire generation.
KenOD said:Well really, this whole thread should have been "are there games one has to play to count as an enthusiast?" or something to that affect, not singling out Nintendo and falling into this same trap all Nintendo threads seem to fall into.
I think if we're talking about history then a person who thinks of themselves as a games enthusiast cannot afford to ignore the influence of Nintendo, and even appreciate some of the design that went into Super Mario Bros or Ocarina of Time. In the same category I feel are titles like DOOM or Spacewar.PortTwo said:As someone who just noticed the thread, and read the OP and will take that at face value...
...there is a question of "gaming literacy", sometimes discussed, much like reading the classics. And there is a fair point to be made in the reading of original ideas and the genesis of a style or method or genre.
The_Technomancer said:Only if we take games that are likewise considered "generational experiences" like...I dunno, Mass Effect 2 and Red Dead Redemption and also say that "proper" gamers must have played them.
You see how ridiculous this quickly becomes?
Okay explain to me how any Call of Duty game is different from any other.outunderthestars said:I want both. Explain to me how the zelda gameplay has changed. You are still doing the exact same thing as the very first zelda game. rescue Zelda from Gannon by getting pieces of triforce kept in dengeons. You have to find a specific item in each dungeon to complete the dungeon then use that item to somehow access another part of the world. repeat until game over.
Yet aside from Mass Effect and Valkyria Chronicles none of those games do anything new to the genres they represent whatsoever, aside from having cinematic presentation.outunderthestars said:Funny, you say that story isn't a part of gaming but I loved the story in Bioshock, La Noire, Red Dead Redemption, Valkyria Chronicles, Braid, Fallout 3, Portal, Mass Effect, Heavy Rain and alot more.
All of those are new or basically new IP this generation. Zelda is still nothing more than new window dressing placed atop the same stale gameplay experience.

Nintendork22 said:You make a good point. If it can derail some of the fanboy trolling, could we refocus the discussion on this point? I believe that there are games, or perhaps franchises, which one needs to play to consider themselves an enthusiast.
For example, does a gamer need to play Super Mario Galaxy 2 to be a gaming enthusiast? No.
Does a gamer need to have played at least 1 2d super mario and 1 3d super mario to be a gaming enthusiast? Yes.

They make a game every 2 years.
Drake's Fortune: fall 2007
Among Thieves: fall 2009
Drake's Deception: fall 2011
PSV Golden Abyss (with a different team): between fall 2011 and spring 2012
And you are counting that as 4 games in 4 years.
...yes. Yes, between fall 2007 and fall 2011 are in fact four years. So its 4 Uncharted titles in 4.5 years.PortTwo said:Really?

One 2D Mario game and two 3D Mario games. The two are barely the same genre, they just feature the same character.Meanwhile, I could turn to the number of "Mario" titles in the last four years, and what would I find?

Weasel word highlighted. Nintendo doesn't get to trade on Mario's name without it "counting". They stick his name on the box, it's a Mario game. Everything else is equivocation.Big One said:Both Galaxy games and New Super Mario Bros. Wii are the only mainline games released in the last four years.
Yeah I was pretty clear._Alkaline_ said:Cause that's four games in four years, you loon.
gatotsu911 said:I suppose you could, but if you're interested in games as an enthusiast/connoisseur, you probably shouldn't. At the very least, every self-proclaimed gamer should play through some portion of Nintendo's AAA NES/SNES/N64 library.
I was curious to see if you were someone who enjoyed modern franchises that feature multiple bi-yearly installments, because I was going to ask what it was that kept them fresh for you.MeBecomingI said:I don't mean to sound like an ass, but I don't really see the point, unless you are searching for something that goes against my opinion through a game I may or may not be playing at present. Sorry if that sounded harsh, but that is usually where this leads... But in the interest of the thread... anything that can interest me. Currently playing through Tactics Ogre: Let us Cling Together, Beyond Good and Evil HD, The Witcher 2 and a replay of Vagrant Story.
Don't get me wrong... I can enjoy a game in a series that has had a long and storied history. But personally, I can only take so much of a game where the property itself has lost the charm it once had with me. I would prefer Nintendo return a franchise like Earthbound and apply some of the talent to a franchise that could use a fresh revival. I WANT THAT!

The games you're playing hardly fall into that category, and I give props to you for it. Given what it appears you do enjoy playing I'm in agreement with you, or at least I understand you.
