Can an original PS2 do progressive scan DVD playback?

I'm sure this is answered in some topic somewhere in the archive, but I can't find the answer in a search. Anyway, I have a near-launch version of the PS2 (like a year after launch), and I also own the first version of the remote control. Does anyone know if the drivers with that remote enabled progressive scan DVD playback or not? I'm not going to be home for like a week so I can't really check the options menu. If not is there any way to enable it on an original PS2 (the new version of the remote and driver) or is that an exclusive PStwo option?

The 50000 model PS2 (not PStwo) does support progressive scan DVD playback, but I don't think you can enable it on older models with newer drivers.

No, that option is not available. The option is not exclusive to PSTwo, though. I have an original style PS2 (50000 series) that offers progressive playback. I don't believe those were on the market for too terribly long, though...

Ah, no luck for me then. The only reason I wondered is because my mom's rear projection CRT HDTV is badly in need of calibration and I was hoping to have a 480p source through which to calibrate, but no such luck, regular anomorphic will have to do I suppose. Thanks guys.

There are some older models that do progressive scan, but it doesn't include the REALLY old models. I think they started with a couple models before PSTwo (maybe a year or two old). I don't know which models specifically.

I bought my 50000 Japanese PS2 in August of 2003, and my NA 50000 PS2 in September of 2003, so they were released at least around that time, probably earlier.

If you have the old PS2 model with the IR sensor built in, then yes it has progressive scan DVD playback built-in. There was never any drivers that came with the DVD remote that allowed PROSCAN to be enabled. All the DVD drivers did was to allow the functions on the remote to work. PStwo as well has PROSCAN built-in, but you are out of luck with models pre SCPH-50001.

Can't you just use a game (like SCII's intro)?

I was wanting to play my AVIA calibration disc through the progressive scan, to get the proper calibration images - of course I'm taking my PS2 over there anyway to play some progressive scan Jak3 though. :lol

She actually might be selling it for like $700 and getting a wall mountable flat screen LCD or something. I'm thinking of buying it, though I really need to go in and do some physical adjustments like cleaning the CRT lenses and manually focusing and doing the 64-point convergence adjustment, but I won't have time for that this weekend. Besides, the thing would convert 720p to either 540p or 1080i, so I'm not sure it'd be all that great for the new consoles anyway, I think it only has a DVI (probaby without the necessary HDCP stuff) and two component inputs.
