Can Nintendo top AM2R with the next Metroid?

Just playing through this one (finally) and it's stunning, literally great, hits the classic formula note for note as good as any 2D Metroid I could have hoped for in every respect... So happy that such a small team made this game happen in such spectacular form!


So how does/can/will Ninty return to form and pull us all back into our soured love affair with first party Metroid? 3D FPS's are a dime a dozen and haven't truly evolved much since Halo took over, 2D indie games often have better gameplay mechanics and atmosphere than AAA offerings, and we haven't heard so much as a fart in Varia suit about one of Nintendo's most classic franchises since Federation Force landed with a resounding thud. Does GAF still have hope for Samus and the series? Or is the galaxy finally resting in at peace...
 
well, if they gave it the developer caliber that Zelda and mainline Mario get, it's possible.

but if they keep giving it Mario Party-tier devs, then no.
 
I liked AM2R. It's a great fan project.

But yes.

Nintendo can bring incredible resources to bear on a project. They also have plenty of expertise in 2D games, especially side scrolling platforming games. Whether their level designers are capable of constructing a good Metroidvania is of some question, given they haven't done one in awhile, but it's a very small question given Nintendo's software engineering skills.

Assuming they bother doing it, Nintendo could produce a great Metroid.

Did you see that recent gameinformer video with Miyamoto and Anouma? They laughed at the 2D Metroid mention in the cup game they played. Tells you what the state of the series is.

I really want a new Metroid OP, I really do. 3D perferably or 2D as well but I dunno if they even care about it that much anymore.
 
If they attempted to make a new one, it'd probably be better than the fan games. Especially cause AM2R is just a remake of Metroid 2.
 
Easily. The reason why this long gap hurts isn't because they can't do it. It's because they simply chose not to. Thinking that we'd like a side game when we haven't had a mainline one that follows up after fusion in YEARS is bizzare Nintendo at its worst.
 
If it was any company besides Nintendo, they'd bring the AM2R team on to help dev a new project in that same vein.

Alas, Nintendo is still the most conservative game company on the planet and would never eat their shame like that.

I thought it was genuine. I laughed out of sheer surprise myself that they would pull that at a ZELDA interview.

Plus he pocketed that same paper during the interview. He could have simply left it on the table and continued the interview If he truly thought nothing of the series.

Well of course I figured they laugh from just seeing that out of nowhere. I wasn't being serious of how they acted with my original post but going along the lines of not expecting a Metroid game to be in development.
 
If they actually make another 2D Metroid I'm sure they can, whether they will is another matter entirely (not in a "Metroid's DEAD!" way, in a they'll probably go 3D way)

Though I should add I was never particularly enamoured with AM2R, it's a solid take on M2 using the GBA games base but that's it.
 
Next Metroid will be a Switch table tennis game between Samus and Ridley.

They're not going to do anything near what AM2R did.
 
They easily could. As great as AM2R is, it still inherited many of the flaws of Metroid 2 which easily has the weakest design of the 2D games.

That was a 9 year difference, and while obviously large, we're fast approaching that same timeframe with Other M, as it was released 7 years ago. Given the reception for Other M, the last mainline Metroid title that was positively received was Metroid Prime 3, which released 10 years ago. I have a good feeling we're going to see a mainline Metroid on the Switch, but you should understand from a fan's perspective - its waning hope, really.
 
At this point I'd be happy for a Metroid Prime HD Trilogy.

I have zero hope for a true new Metroid game at this point from Nintendo, 2D or 3D. A beautiful 2D style Metroid game on Switch is probably my most hoped for vaporware.
 
Nintendo could easily top any fan made project in existence. Problem is they'd have to decide if the project is viable or not first... I just don't see them doing another 2D Metroid for a long time if ever.

If your favorite franchise comes out once every other gen, in an industry that has yearly sequels, that seems like enough reason to be worried. Or maybe "I'm sure it'll show up again in 6 years" is reassuring for some.

You do realize that AMR2 is essentially just a remake of M2 with GBA assets? So it wasn't that hard to get the formula down.
 
Maybe? Last couple Metroid games certainly weren't better than AM2R, so it's hardly a sure thing. Depends on who works on the game and how much budget and effort they get and what kind of game it even is.

Calling AM2R "just a remake" is like calling Metroid Zero Mission "just a remake". There are a lot of changes.

Plus, like Zelda and Mario, Metroid essentially split into two separate series (2D and 3D) with the release of Prime. However, while Nintendo has kept releasing both 2D and 3D Mario and Zelda games, there hasn't been a 2D Metroid since 2004 and that was a remake.
