Donkey Kong Is Getting the AAA Treatment. What Nintendo IP Is Next?

Now that you mention it, Other M really was that big push for Metroid wasn't it? A more cinematic style in story telling and gameplay and if I remember correctly it was the One More Thing for E3.

The story and characterization of Samus did not go over well at all. I was personally fine with it but the game did not resonate. It's a shame because I was all for the 3rd person action that game offered. I could look passed so many flaws because I loved the way the combat felt in the game. Well besides the 1st person turning of the Wiimote. I wonder if it wasn't mandated that sideways Wii controller must be used, and 1st person must be done by switching your grip, if the game wouldn't have done at least a little better. At least we are mainly out of that era of Nintendo.
It suffered from a ton of problems, controls included. However yes, the story in that game was abysmal and it showed that a writer who excels at environmental storytelling isn't necessarily good at character writing and dramatic scenes.

I'm not sure where they should take Metroid, but trying to flesh out Samus' backstory to make her...whoever that was in Other M, was not the right way to go.

Thankfully not many people remember that game so it didn't tarnish the image of how people traditionally view Samus, which is a stoic bounty hunter with a super suit.

I think Nintendo should leave any anime-style, super cheesy writing for Kid Icarus. In some ways Kid Icarus reminds me of Sora from KH so that type of cheese would fit him better than it would Samus.

I hope it's either Star Fox or F-Zero.

I'll chime in to the StarFox quire. I think there's loads of potential there as long as they're not fixed on limiting it to being a rail-shooter.

I'd love to see more of Kid Icarus as well. Uprising was phenomenal.
Damn, I would love to see a sequel to Uprising. Sadly, we only have one Sakurai, and he's probably slaving away at the next Smash, taking intermittent breaks to work on Air Riders.

Star Fox, they never really tried with the franchise since Assault. Command and Zero felt more like side projects, low effort attempts than anything.

I dunno man, but I'm super hyped DK is finally getting a real glow up. This looks like a main AAA Nintendo game and not a nostalgia fueled AAA Nintendo game, and they usually only reserve this treatment for tentpoles. No matter what, it is clear Nintendo is hoping to preserve the DK IP with this game for years to come. Count me as hyped.

Yeah you do really feel like DK is being set up long term and the future is secure for a few decades. We don't see revivals like this often so I am enjoying every moment of it.

By the way I don't blame Nintendo for not touching Star Fox at all. There is no winning with that fanbase.

  • You make Star Fox 64-2, it's not enough (Star Fox Assault).
  • You make an action adventure game mixed with Star Fox, it's not enough (Star Fox Adventures)
  • You try and give it unique gameplay mechanics, it's not enough (Star Fox Zero)
  • You try and give them a more open, strategic game, it's not enough (Star Fox Command)
  • You un-cancel Star Fox 2, it's not enough.

You are not wrong about any of these points. I will say this though, each of these Star Fox games aside from Zero was done by "someone else" and each of these was an experiment of some form.

Now I understand the original Star Fox was not from Nintendo's internal teams but Star Fox 64 was. 64 is what I feel most Nintendo fans look back fondly on. Afterwards Star Fox was handed off to 2nd parties, 3rd parties and/or B-teams. Also each one seemed to experiment to see what would stick. The worst offenders I would say being Command and Zero.

I don't necessarily view the experimenting as a bad thing either in case of the Wii U Gamepad. I played it, understood it and loved it. However I can understand that such a learning curve on such an unpopular system was not going to win over the masses.

My thought is if the same Nintendo EAD team that headed SF64 developed Assault with the same general ideas there would have been better care and attention to quality control. Donkey Kong is getting that care right now.

Star Fox could be so much more and I feel like it's only a matter of time. It could be a tentpole single player and multiplayer rolled into one. I just hope it's taken in eternally and Nintendo takes a step back at what made the first 2 so great but also what has been successful from other companies in similar genres.

Why do people cry over Donkey Kong, Mario, Star Wars and Sonic? It's not healthy to live in a bubble like this.
Cry? Who's crying? I love games like Donkey Kong and Mario because they are fun….and last time I checked fun is reason we play video games in the first place.

Supposedly it's the same universe as F-Zero so there is a lot characters and lore to make a good adventure game out of.

A new starfox game, splatoon turned it proper single player experience and story (maybe getting this with splatoon raiders), Luigi mansion 4 , punch out, kid ikaris, yoshi , astral chain 2 the list goes on and on, but can't see Nintendo just taking a step back and pushing 3rd part games, hopefully not as u don't buy a Nintendo handheld to play top 3rd party games

On the contrary to your point, I think Star Fox and Star Fox 64 accomplished their jobs, which is to lead to other unique flight-arcade and flight-railshooter games that were inspired by both. The onus at this point would be on Star Fox fans to check out those other franchises, because there's years-worth of them out there, including Ubisoft's Starlink which had an entire campaign with Star Fox being playable on Switch.

Zelda... New Zelda formula sucks. Tired of being a tinkerer of shit that breaks when trying to fight. Even the fucking Master Sword. Talk about trying to ease people into planned obsolescence.

Haven't played dk since snes one

Where do I start? I currently own a switch, switch 2, and 3DS

Play the OG DK on NES Switch Online, same for the 3 SNES Online Donkey Kong Country Games. Play DK Returns HD for the Switch as well as DK Tropical Freeze. Both 2D sidescrollers. No way to play DK64 which is probably a good thing but might be interesting from the perspective of the new one is only the second time DK is in a full-fledged 3D title in 26 years.

But actually on-rail ala SNES. Cut the 3D arena shit. Make it the best on-rail game of all time.

No gimmick, no double screen, no motion controls...

Make it a bit epic or something, get him out of the Arwing, do some onfoot onrail shooting (Sin & Punishment like), arwing breaks down on remote planet, ride an animal to get out (Panzer Dragoon like). Some twists and turns rather than planet to planet.

Make it look like SNES polygon wise for all I care and drop path tracing on it :messenger_tears_of_joy: I think the SNES art style was sleek as hell

Oh Boiiiiiiiiiiiii. Do have some suggestions.

Star Fox - I enjoy most of the star fox games but imagine a ratchet and clank platform with Arwing hopping and flying in all range mode and on rails. (This could also work for a sin and punishment game because anime is huge now. I think a Nintendo sci fi weeb story could work today.

Mach Rider - Make a Sci Fi open world game out of it and make an original story. Give the teenagers and young adults something cool to play.

Ice Climbers - If death stranding and breathe of the wild can reinvent walking and climbing exploration. So can the ice climbers with climbing mechanics and platforming challenges for environmental puzzle solving.

F Zero - Come on show us what them 120 fps can do on that switch 2. Also ship customization and online racing.

Pilotwings - Flight Simulator is huge but boring we need that Nintendo magic for an arcade flight sim. Shit Mario Kart World has a big open world. Let us fly in a big open world.

Mother - I know I would want Itoi in the directors chair but if he is still not interested maybe he could consult or over look a mother style project. Let those young writers loose on a new story. (I don't want an earthbound remake.) Also the battle system! I love it. Please there are so many Earthbound inspired combat systems but man I know a young team at Nintendo would kill it with that system and expanding upon it.

Wave Race - I want switch 2 water physics that go crazy in 4k. I say give us something like smugglers run for objective and the water physics make you think on the fly how to handle the wake and your jet ski. Real time weather effects. Also bring us 1080 snowboarding with real time weather effects.

Devil World - I know this seems odd. That moving border and limited movement mechanic is interesting and I could see other puzzle opportunities for the gameplay. I also just want to see a Miyamoto classic get some love, but this pick is a pipe dream.

F-Zero (with a soundtrack based on the original). Never get it tho, best us F-Zero fans get is a stage in Mario Kart or Smash Bros.

It's been a while since Fire Emblem and you know they are putting a lot of resources into the next one.

look a few posts above they literally made that game bro
Tokyo Mirage is not the game I was talking about, I want an actual Medival AAA JRPG set within the Fire Emblem universe

Chibo robo. Yeah I know there's a Chibi game in already development by the ex Chibi robo devs but a proper mainline Chibi game that isn't an afterthought like zip lash.

Have him in a massive factory where they are all made some super large environment to explore and clean.

Splatoon was a decade ago.
I think Nintendo is overdue for a brand new major IP.

(a good open world starfox with Assault's seamless on-foot/vehicle gameplay could be nice too)

I hope we get SMB2-Mario back again, or that they just make a new Doki Doki Panic game. I really want a sequel to SMB2 as I'm pretty tired of the usual 2D Mario games.

never really got into star fox i'm not really into on rails flying games but if they do a mix of flying and on ground action i'd give it a go, Duckhunt revival; 99 style maybe, Kid icarus is also a new one for me, saves going over the same characters every gen and
getting burn out.

I've been replaying Mario Bros. Wonder and it makes me really want a Mario Maker 3 with the entire Wonder kit as the main addition. Most of the conversation around Wonder is just "yep, 2D Mario good, better than NSMB, wonder flowers cool" but that game doesn't get enough credit for all the new types of enemies, platforms, items, and level gimmicks it brings in. A 'Mario Wonder Maker' would be amazing!

Would love to see another F-Zero if any as they've been pretty good on all titles I've enjoyed. This is the only one I can think of.

give me that star fox adventures 2...

especially now that you refuse to make real zelda games anymore and make minecraft ones.

I'd love to see a Fire Emblem Warriors AAA release. Three Houses was incredible but it didn't feel AAA in terms of production value (textures, models, environments, all were kinda rough).

I'd also love to see a true AAA budget Xenoblade reboot.

And a new Zelda that is more serious in tone. Heck a AAA Mario in the vein of that darker medieval fantasy theme of Odyssey could be great too. Mario x Bayonetta crossover. Oof. I know, it won't happen.

Next? Well technically it's Metroid Prime 4, I think.

OP your post is to extensive I can't read all of it sorry..
