I'm kind of surprised people actually think Nintendo will stop making Metroid games. They were never an F-Zero-like series, Metroid has always been a top tier Nintendo franchise.
They aren't going to live off making just Mario, Zelda and second tier stuff like Fire Emblem and Animal Crossing forever.
I do think people are getting super presumptuous about a specifically 2D Metroid though.
Lol but now I'm sad
A platitude that rang so damn hollow following the year that Star Fox Zero, Federation Force, and Color Splash came out."We know what our fans want."
While Nintendo did put pressure on IntSys I doubt IntSys would be willing to be just a support developer, and none of IntSys' other IPs is as known as FE.Now they are, but for a while there Fire Emblem seemed to be on the cutting block as well. It's due to Awakening having great execution in its design that it's higher than Metroid at the moment.
Fire Emblem and Animal Crossing aren't second tier IP and they're both bigger and more important to Nintendo than Metroid.
I do think Nintendo will make another mainline Metroid game though and I think it will be announced this year.
Easily.
I really like AM2R for what it was, it's a great indie/homebrew achievement. But it pales next to the SNES and GBA Metroids. It pales next to Nintendo's many recent 2D games. Here's why:
Some of the bosses are so-so, a little uninspired and unmemorable.
The enemy and background art can be really inconsistent and uncohesive with other parts of the stage.
The difficulty/balance feels off at certain parts of the game's progress.
The map design is subpar compared to the official games. There are meandering, zig-zaggy areas. You have to go through these annoying, tedious tunnels a bunch of times and get slowed down for no reason. Some parts of the map just feel sloppy, unnecessarily huge and empty.
This would be a decent 7/10 Metroid and probably near the bottom of everyone's favorite Metroid game list if it was an official Nintendo game.

2D Metroid.
By Retro.
Using the Donkey Kong engine.
Boom.
EDIT: also fun fact, the DNC Returns engine is the same one Prime ran on
Metroid fans are weird. It skips a single gen (you know, like it did between Super and Metroid Prime) and people think it's dead.
It's a little different when a series skips a gen due to successive commercial failures and a lack of interest from the publisher... there was good reason to be worried about the series after Super Metroid.

Wasn't that the case with Star Fox though? Hell Punchout came back after skipping 2 gens somehow!
Nintendo already topped AM2R.
They C&D'd that shit
Wait, that's true? I presumed the NSMB series, Kirby, Mario Party and maybe some others shared the engine because they were all so similar, but the Prime trilogy, too?

Also: presume you meant DKC, not Hillary's email server... Although that might answer some questions
The usual suspects were teasing a leak about it.I'm pretty confident we will see a new Metroid this e3.
This is a problem honestly; they shouldn't be forced to work on Metroid or be 'the Metroid team' when they showed with the DKC games that they can do great work on many IP's they tackle.
Just....I would be happy to see them make Metroid but they shouldn't be the one to fix Nintendo's messes. Nintendo themselves should be fixing the mess they made in 2010. It's not fair on Retro Studios if they don't want to work on Metroid. But if they DO want to work on the IP, the work on the DKC games can easily help in creating a quality 2.5D Metroid adventure.

Not to mention, didn't it end up that people generally liked Color Splash? That's a rather cynical viewpoint. You could also say the new main entries in two of their biggest IPs, Zelda and 3D Mario seem to indicate they're aware of what their fans want and as a result the reception for these games has been overwhelmingly positive.

I like this idea. But at the same time Retro won't be able to create a new IP.Just rename Retro to Retroid and they can be to Metroid what 343i is to Halo.
Except, you know...good.
2D Metroid.
By Retro.
Using the Donkey Kong engine.
Boom.
Kid Icarus also.
Nintendo doesn't really truly abandon IPs (unless that IP is F-Zero)
Don't go playing with my heart like that.2D Metroid.
By Retro.

Boom.
Isn't the Retro of today and the Metroid-era Retro totally different companies? I know there were plenty of employees and higher-ups that left.
