Can you feel it?? The system wars approach... Can GAF withstand the storm?

OK.

I think the past several years have been pretty nice by "system war" standards. The PS2 folks have been pretty happy with thier sales and 3rd party dominance, the Xbox by it's Halo and system performance dominance, and the Nintendo fans with the GBA dominance / Nintendo dust (Pikmin, Metroid, Animal Crossing). Each side has come to understand their place in this world and, for the most part, accepted it and been happy.

Now, it seems the inevitable wave of craptastic fanboyism is almost here again. I didn't post here at the beginning of the last generation, but from what I gather, it was pretty bad. However, in the couple of years that I have posted here, this forum has been, IMO, the absolute best forum for intelligent discussion of the industry. As far as games, it's pretty hit and miss, because I've bought ALOT OF CRAP because of these boards, but I've gotten some pretty good gems as well.

However, each day that passes, it gets harder and harder to avoid pretty blatant "fanboyism" that threatens to derail this entire forum. We all know that it can be fun to take pot shots at systems/games and to a certain extent, it's just extending a valid argument to a sometimes ludicrous end, but it's all in good fun. Now we're getting to the point that some posters are actually trolling as some sort of a holy crusade against system <X>.

I just wanted to say that it's been a great couple of years while it lasted, but IMO, it's gonna get REALLL ugly over the next couple of years, with the appropriate trolling peaks of E3, system launches, holidays, etc.

My real question is this? Is it really as bad as I imagine it being, can GAF maintain it's relatively "high quality" of discussion, or has it really been bad all along? ;)

PSP vs. DS has brought out more jackasses than anything Xenon vs. PS3 could produce.

Revolution will be part "HAHA you own a what?" and "That's cool. You own a Revolution."

I think the really ugly stuff will come before/during/after next year's e3 after the launch of Next Box and before Revolution and Playstation 3. Sparks will fly...oh yes

GAF has always had it's fair share of idiots, and IIRC I've been kicking around here since 1999.

Nothing has really changed, and that's what the Ignore List function is for. ;)

I am getting sick of all the insecurity and jockeying for vapor first place already. The Microsoft supporters tremble at the thought of being slightly underpowered. The Nintendo fans are hoping Nintendo can reclaim it's former glory.

Sony, I'm counting on Sony showing up the other two yet again; and bringing us one step closer to a single console future!

Yeah, that's gonna piss some folks off; but that's just the way I am. I'm not keen on Nintendo's software, and Microsoft is just a foul business that I will not give money to.

I'm hoping Nintendo can pull it's head out of it's ass and relegate Microsoft to third place.

I'm also hoping with Nintendo allegedly ascribing to free on-line play, Sony will continue to promote free on-line gaming with the PS3; and Microsoft will be the odd man out. Leaving the Xbox fans to praise XBL to the heavens one day, then start a thread bitching about the cheaters, racists, and other jerks plaguing XBL for $50 a year. :lol

One Console, All Games - Free On-line Play. The way it must be!

Try reading my posts and thanks for contributing to the discussion. Nice to see that people can prove my point so quickly.

do you really want me to bring up some of your previous posts?

edit: i for one enjoy the fanboy wars that come out. Really fun reads.

I've no idea. I'm kind of hoping Nintendo totally blows everyone out of the water next gen just to see what it will do to this place.

Honestly I think it will just be a sales thread o-rama and many comparison shots.

I'm selling officially silenced GAF ponchos for all! If the "Fanboy Storm" gets too crazy you can be nice and smug using one of my ponchos.

I hope you're ready to pay >400$ for a console and >$60 for a game

cause that's what'll happen if one manufacturer has a monopoly

There's no way it'll compare to when this gen was really starting up so it shouldn't be too bad.

considering you had ps3/dc/xbox/gamecube all being demoed at different times... and next gen games/concepts being demoed at different times...

having all the next gen competitors display at e3 for the first time... is an oddity...

and it's going to be the best e3 yet because of that.

I hope you're ready to pay >400$ for a console and >$60 for a game

It's still more affordable than buying three incompatible hardware sets at launch. ^_^

As for software prices, I'm a Cheapass Gamer. So I don't buy anything until it hits $19.99 or clearance. :D

Not me, Nintendo4life! My favorites company is Nintendo > Sony >>>>> Microsoft. But I like how Microsoft introduced and embraced online gaming. Now it will become the standard next-gen.

as opposed to about $900 for 3 consoles + 3x the cost in accesories and probably $60 games anyway...sounds like a deal :p

From somebody who has been on-line since the late 80's .... the 16 bit generation was alot worse. The majority of people only bought one system, and would rag on the others. Things have changed .. and alot of hardcore gamers are multi-system.

I don't see it as being that bad. Now that type of intense bickering is saved for similar games within a genre (Fighting games, FPS, etc)

I've only been lurking for a few months, but things haven't decreased since then. Definitely a better quality of discussions than most [all] forums this size.

And most of the fanboyism is backed up with at least some evidence/source/whatever, so its not that bad. But then theres guys like 'peedi', whose comments are just funny to read :D

If you're still not happy with the way GAF is, take a trip to gamespots forums then come back and see if there is really anything to worry about.

What an awful post on many counts so I hope you jest.

I also despise blatant fanboyism and I think it should be banned after some warning. All this forum needs is a 100 peedi's posting continuously and I'm gone. I used to enjoy the confrontations and participated in the arguements myself but the civility of this forum is outstanding and is proof positive that we can all live together.

I like talking about games instead of hardware, so talk about flops and RAM and all that other stuff just makes my eyes glaze over. I avoid those threads when I can.

New hardware won't automatically make better games. Maybe better LOOKING games, but I'm the kind of guy who can still play NES, Genesis and SNES games with little trouble, so that's not as important to me as it is to others who demand 60 frames per second and 480/1080/2060 whatever.

It's an oddity but I don't think it'll compare to how berserk Sega fans were going this gen.

That's the truth :D. I didnt buy a Xbox this gen, but MS is right about one thing. Everyone starts at 0 sales, and a big mistake can mess up any of the companies. Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony better be on game :)

In theory (I don't see this happening), couldn't there be a standard set in place for video game players, or the eventual set top boxes that will play video games, that is periodically upgraded? Using this standard, many manufacturers would then be able to compete agaisnt each other based on extra features that don't affect the games and such the way the current dvd model works. This way there is still competition so the prices of the of the consoles don't go up but at the same time people can play all the games on just one console. They would just choose which model from which manufacturer they want. Guess it's just wishful thinking on my part.

That is true. The only reason I bought a PS2 was for MGS2. I didn't buy a Xbox because I could go over my friend house and play Halo and Halo 2 any time I want to. It is hard to stay a one system owner these days with all the AAA games coming out.

I agree, this is the best gaming board I've ever visited. I'm pretty sure this place can "weather the storm". This place has enough intelligent and well informed posters to prove the fanboys wrong.

Its called a PC.

No flip flopping from me. I'm only going one console next generation until the other 2 drop to about $100-$150.00.

I'm not sure which console yet. Xbox has been my favorite this generation, but I have some concerns with Xbox 2. It'll probably be hard to resist buying one and waiting on a PS3 or Rev until some time in 2006.

Its gonna be fun times on a lot of message boards... especially over at IGN where I mainly post. I predict a record week of bannings being handed out during E3 week. Unfortunately, I'll be on vacation on a beach in south Florida the week of E3 with little to no internet access. I can probably check on news briefly, but I won't be able to have any knock-down-drag-out discussion, and the chance to earn my own banning, until I get back. :D

The board is whatever the mods want to make of it. The reason this board is so much better than any other is that there is SOME level of extreme stupidity that will eventually net you a ban.

But things have been slipping lately ... there's been an influx of at least a few blatant shit-starters who've been allowed to run riot ... hopefully we can get some increased adult supervision going before things get too bad ...

At the least I'd assume there will be oodles of trolling to coincide with xbox360's release because the Sony diehards must be thinking that if the 360 release just simmers but doesn't quite burn then their beloved PS3 will asurredly kick resoundingly into first place next gen with its more powerful hardware and JP publishers on the bandwagon. :)

LMAO @ Sonycowboy talking about blatant fanboyism.

pot. kettle. black. We're all guilty of it at one time or another. ;)

sonycowboy has been a fairly well-rounded poster the last little while. Good on you, mate.

This board will meltdown when E3 finally arrives, for sure. I'm not in any camp, so I really couldn't care any less what goes on. But maybe we can try not to derail the topics with the second post? Oops, forgot where I was for a second...

Worse case scenarios:

Nintendo - A)Revolution is gimmicky and changes nothing in game design/interactivity B)Instead of creating a new image, teen/mature games are few and far between C)Mario 128 is an upgraded Super Mario Brothers 3 clone with 2D/3D mode switchers

Sony - A)considerable hardware failures at launch(include analog stick shockers) B)Several big third party exclusives like Final Fantasy and GTA go to MS and/or Nintendo C)Xenon somehow gets an unsummountable 1 year lead

Microsoft - A)PS2 outsells Xenon during 1 year headstart and is overtaken by Sony and/or Nintendo a year later with PS3/Revolution B)Halo 3 is greatly flawed and does nothing to impact PS3/Rev sales C)Nintendo plays all of their hands right with Revolution and Xenon gets stuck into a 3rd place position

Since this is a fanboy thread. I'll get my rant out of my system now and then just concentrate on games and the good stuff at E3.

Fuck MS*

That's it.

* disclaimer. I don't want to buy your shitty console for the Q studio stuff. I did that this gen for Sega and how you burned me.

And I don't think GAF becomes fanboy driven during E3.. my recollection is that everyone gets excited abotu games as they should and that's it. I guess console unveilings can bring out the fanboys in all of us.

I actually thought that while writing my post, but I was thinking more along the lines of something that was more dedicated to gaming/multimedia and not so expensive for the average person to purchase to play high end games. Good point, though.

i just miss sega, but the way things are they would never have been able to afford these high powered hardware that are forthcoming.

It was said above, it's more civil as more of us have all/multiple systems; or at least see the logic in doing so. There is no more need to feel that somehow your board slams will convince others to wait/buy some other system - and that this would somehow affect the future of the industry.

Xenon is going to fucking ROCK this fall, it will, I believe that we are all smart enough to know that. PS3 will basically be the same power, with some exclusives in fall '06. Revolution will be odd man out this gen imo, but will have something kick ass that will make me buy it. I bought the DS... and I am still waiting for it to be worth my purchase, but I know that it will be worth it at some point. Too busy playing the PSP for the last few months, and Hawk today:) to concern with the DS anyway.

Bottom line, KICK ASS time to be a game fan, there are so many killer games coming for everyone; THAT's why I believe that at least at some level fanboyism will be kept to a civil, more just for the fun of it level. At least on this, the best board on the planet.

I can hope anyway.

Bring on Oblivion and Perfect Dark!

And you started off so well...

Not that there's anything wrong with being a proponent of a system as long as it doesn't degrade into mindless bashing (which you're post didn't)

I'll be jumping on the most popular platform in a year or two, i certainly don't give a shit if it's written Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo on the box seriously.

Does anyone think the PS2 can outsell Xenon this xmas?

IMO, It's GUARANTEED to outsell it this holiday season. And that's assuming at least 2.5M+ Xenon units will be sold this November/December.
