It feels sad that I don't know this about my own country but, there aren't any term limits on our Prime Minister is there? Theoretically we could be stuck with this dickhead Harper for the rest of his life? Welcome to the United States of Canada.

are you talking about canada? the longest term a prime minister can have is 5 years. i don't believe there is a maximum number of terms though.

Yeah I am, and I meant maximum number of times, like how in the US you can only be President twice. I don't want to be stuck with Harper forever.

You can be PM as long as you want, as long as people vote for you.
The Liberals and NDP need to combine.

What if we ripped our DVDs before the law changed? We didn't break the law when we ripped them, so we're not breaking the law by keeping those backups are we? It's pretty unusual to have a law that requires you to do something vs a law prohibiting you from doing something, so I can't imagine they would seriously expect for us to delete all these backups the moment the law changed.

Well, I suppose you can, but it would still suck and you wouldn't be able to rip any new dvds. It's not a solution, and from what I see here it is only illegal to bypass the security, which you aren't doing when you have the content already. But we'd need to know all the laws in this overhaul.

So awesome. Thanks Conservatives! I'm sure glad all the rich old fucks who live in my (and James Moore's) constituency will be happy their internets are safe from copyright thieves.

Someone very close to me (I trust completely) forwarded me this message after I sent them the link... they often work with CRTC and Copyright issues. Take this as you will:

Yeah, folks can blame the video game producers' lobby for the lock provisions.
And meanwhile the bill has a loophole so 'enablers' like BitTorrent sites are exempt from statutory damages.
So they screwed John Q public and let the big guys off the hook.

I'd really like to know which lobby that was. i have asked for more info.

lol how would this even be enforced? How is the government, let alone my ISP, know when I rip a CD or DVD?

I'm guessing that isn't really the purpose of it. They are making it easier to charge suspected pirates. If you're suspected enough for them to confiscate your computer, the chances are you're fucked. There is going to be at least one or two ripped files on there. When it comes to major uploaders, there could be hundreds of course. They don't have to prove you've been distributing copyrighted material, simply having it on your computer is enough.

Canada's own fault for having 3 major Left/Left-center parties and only one major right-wing party. I don't see how the Conservatives will be voted out in the near future when Liberals, NDP and Bloc spilt the left-wing vote, even if 60-65% of the country votes left.

but coalitions are anti-democracy and are basically a coup attempt.

When the government kicks in your door for whatever bullshit reason they come up with, now they will (almost) always find evidence of your guilt on your devices, same as if they found child porn.

Actually, I was at a Michael Geist talk at my institute, and one of the nice things about this bill is that all damages are capped at $5000 for private users instead of the insane RIAA lawsuits.

edit: Also, it puts the Notice-and-Notice method (ie. Infringer emails your ISP and the ISP emails you) formally into law. The ISP can't and won't withdraw your internet access on cases of infringement.

wasn't the deep packet sniffing requirement for Canadian ISP's part of this or did they remove that?

Won't this make all programs like AnyDVD and MakeMKV illegal to buy or use in Canada?
What about people that bought anydvd lifetime Sub years ago?

Might have to consider a HDFury3 while they're still legal to ship to Canada now.

Sad Sad state of affairs.

Oh I can't break copyright protection to make a bakup?

This is one of those laws, like marijuana prohibition, where the only thing to say is:

KISS MY ASS.

I'd rather be a member of the United States of America than the United States of Canada. At least then we'd have no Rogers monopoly and better Internet bandwidth.

This won't change anything but the Canadian government's relationship with other countries'.

Information wants to be free. It's nature.

People won't understand why this is bad until it hits them in the wallet. With the rising popularity of tablets, I'm waiting for news stories later this year where grandparents are slapped on the wrist with 50K fine for ripping Titanic onto their iPad.

I LOOK FORWARD TO THAT DAY.

I would bang a hot farmer!
Harper is going to make it so that you have to register your computer with the government. They'll install spyware on it that you can't remove and will flag and send an e-mail to all of the movie studios, music studios and the US government (who will then try to extradite you to Montana or North Dakota).
You joke now...

no shit..getting very close to not having any privacy anymore..

just look at recent headline on the verge and others..wonder if this is gonna be part of Canadian ISP reform.

http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/03/cisco-cloud-connect-privacy/

Cisco backs down over right to see your internet history

Owners of E2700, E3500 and E4500 models recently discovered that their router login credentials stopped working following an automatic firmware update, and instead they were asked to sign up to the new Cisco Connect Cloud platform to regain access. If they sought to avoid this by rebooting the router, they reportedly lost control over their advanced settings, which led to a sense of being cajoled.

To make matters worse, the Connect Cloud service came with a supplemental privacy policy that explicitly allowed Cisco to peek at a user's "internet history," "traffic" and "other related information." If Cisco discovered you had used your router for "pornographic or offensive purposes" or to violate "intellectual property rights," it reserved the right to shut down your cloud account and effectively cut you off from your router

BTW, it is true that Harper and his Conservatives are passing laws like this because "LOL we have a majority now and we can do whatever the hell we want", but on this issue, the Liberals would have done the same thing years ago if they had the chance.

Paul Martin's minority Liberals were the first to try and pass the Canadian DMCA at the insistence of America. They were stopped by the fall of their government. Harper's Conservatives tried a few times, but they were also stopped by the falls of their minority governments.

It is apparently true that the Liberal version had some softer wording, but David Emerson, the Liberal who wrote the Liberals version of the Canadian DMCA, the guy who said that under Harper "the strong would survive and the weak die" and said that he wanted to be "Stephen Harper's worst nightmare", but then crossed the floor to join Harper for political gain, told me personally that the Conservative version of the bill was "better" than his Liberal one.

The Liberals, the Conservatives, they're both the same here. They're both scum. The best thing we had going was a broken and ineffective government, which was nice while it lasted. The only consistently good party on this front has been the NDP (I don't know about the Bloq or Green).

Ugh, this government.

I also can't believe that link about the MicroSD Cards. So stupid.

i can't believe this was even a thing:

http://mobilesyrup.com/2012/07/03/canadian-government-wont-place-levies-on-microsd-cards/

our sd cards were about to cost more because of copyright levies.

wow.

That's been around since audio tape, and it's debatably a good thing.

If the industry is bitching because we rip our own DVDs and put them on our smartphones, then isn't it worth it to pay an extra $0.25 on the cost of any microSD big enough to hold video, just to get them to stop bitching about how you use your phone?

Keep it up Canada. You'll be the 51st state in no time.

That is the Conservatives' goal actually. That's why they are going in one direction, and they don't care who gets fed up and leaves. It's divide and conquer, and the only way to merge the oil-production facility of Canada into the US, indirectly.

So how would one even get caught in the first place? Wouldn't you have to be sitting in the FBI headquarters saying "hey guys come look at my screen, look what I'm doing" to get caught? ISP's don't see shit when it comes to what you put in your DVD drive. Not that this law doesn't suck any less because of slim chances of getting caught though.

I've never understood peoples resistance to these, other than the names given to them by politicians trying to pass bills like this one, "iPod tax", "cd/dvd tax". They basically allow us a measure of freedom to do as we want with our devices and manufacturers get a small bit of $ from said tax to shut up and leave us be. But no, instead we get this bill instead.

Well they have publicly stated several times that every bill they create/pass is part of their mandate as given to them by the Canadian voters. The Liberals just tried to pass shitty bills without trying to point the finger at the voting public.

bloodydrake said:

That was part of Vic Toews internet spying bill that's been put on the back burner for now. However, if he chose to do so, like Moore did here, he could just reenter the bill unchanged and try to pass it again, for your and your children's safety.

Hey people that didn't vote, this is the kind of garbage that happens because of your apathy. :/

Oct. 2015 can't come soon enough.

No because it breaks your presumtion of innocence, assuming that every disc/sd/hdd you buy is gonna be used for piracy so you have to pay them in advance.

It's just another excuse to keep earning money while doing nothing from a stagnant industry that keeps on dying.
