Canadian Gaming Deals and Discussion Thread 4: That $70s Show

There are probably no Ontario laws preventing retailers from breaking street dates so only risk those guys are running is probably getting into deep trouble with the publisher.

Not sure if it's the standard price at this point, but Staples has got Battlefield 4 for PS3 and X360 for 29.90$CAD

I am torn between these and the Billy shelves, because I have a boatload of board games I also want to shelve/display.

Maybe get both? I think they're meant to compliment each other anyway. If I'm not mistaken, the Billy ones are almost twice as deep, so they're not as ideal for storing games as the Benno one.

About how many games do one of those Benno shelves hold? I really like the way they look but I've got a whole ton of games to store.

So guys, I just moved to Montreal from Paris.

I haven't seen any video games stores. What or where should I look for? I'd like to buy a PS4 here, considerably cheaper than in France..

The biggest chains are Futureshop and BestBuy (they both have the same owner, so the inventories and prices are more or less the same), and EBgames. Then you have some independent shops. Where are you in Montreal exactly?

For now near Berri UQAM station, afterwards I'll be near Jean Talon.
Haven't seen any of those shops yet. I'll look for it.

Just in front of Berri-Uqam is the big Archambault store, they have a decent videogame selection. Other than that, there's a Futureshop 15 minutes (walking) from there.

However, good luck with the PS4. It's out of stock everywhere.

These dudes have broken the street date on Dark Souls 2, $65/ea with tax included apparently. As per their kijiji post: http://toronto.kijiji.ca/c-buy-and-...360-BRAND-NEW-Avaiable-now-W0QQAdIdZ572768083 go bramptongaf

Speaking of Dark Souls 2, I think Gamerama in Toronto has it. I walked by on the way home today and they had Dark Souls 2 on the screen that you can see from your window. I didn't bother to go in though. Not a personal fan of that place.

I did go to Game Centre and somehow got Sakura Wars V Premium Edition for 39.99, where most places sell just the normal one for $50+ and the LE comes for as high as $100+ sometimes, or some people sell it at that price. It still has the artbook and poster and everything as well. Also apparently NIS American localized this. Huh, never knew.

Is it better to use Paypal lr paying direct with Credit Card when paying in USD?

Paypal conversion sucks. I remember when I last bought(last month), their conversion was like 1 CAD = 0.87 USD when it should be 0.90 cents. I tried using my bank but for some reson they still used Paypal conversion lol

I'm not quite sure if I did get your question

I thought paypal gives you the option of using your credit card's conversion rate?

Yes they do and I did that but for "some reason" it switched back to paypal after the transaction. I don't know why. I'll probably try it again next time.

Sub 90 cent dollar makes me so fucking sad.

Have any economic analysts (yeah, yeah I know, but they may be more accurate than Pachter) given any indication when the dollar could rebound? I want this shitty $70's show over with in under 2 years at the most. I hope we don't deal with this crap for all of this gen.

An "economic analyst" would probably tell you that this a low Canadian dollar is good for the "economy". As to when this would rebound, from what I understand the dollars were at parity mostly because the USD was weak. So presumably we won't see parity again until the next economic downturn... which isn't really something to hope for unfortunately.

So I hear. Correct me if I'm wrong but Canada needs to become more competitive. Yeah, we don't have the same economies of scale as the US but depending on a weak dollar for things live foreign investment doesn't sound like a good plan in the long run. It does have it's benefits but we gotta find a better way. These prices are making gaming an expensive hobby. Also, allowing certain firms to have an oligopoly in certain markets doesn't do very well for innovation or consumer choice.

Ah, I know that a low Canadian dollar is good for the economy, but I'm not very good with anything else so thanks for filling me in. Well, I can only somehow hope that a major retailer brings the prices in line with the US... I wish Futureshop/BB had stuck to their guns and kept the prices against EB.

This move is going to lead to lower sales in the long run, there's always the strong franchise audiences that bring in big numbers but I feel higher game prices will take a cut into consumer purchases. Again, I can only hope though.

The new $70 price tag for games is very concerning. I will NEVER be willing to pay nearly $80 after tax for a game. So if there's no way to purchase a game for cheaper on release date, I'll always be waiting for a price drop.

That said, I haven't even paid $60 for a game since 2010. Tsilon was great, and then the Futureshop e3 sales became the new best thing. I've used that for the last few years, and I have all of my 2014 games pre-ordered for $40 thanks to last year's e3 sale. I'm concerned about this year's e3 sale, though; if Futureshop doesn't do the deal, I'll be purchasing FAR fewer games on release day in 2015.

Many people have expressed dissatisfaction with 2013's game sales. But 2013 was amazing for me. Thanks to Shop.ca and ebates.ca, I got a PS4 in December for $299 before tax - incredible! The COD/BF4/AC4 trade-in Futureshop fiasco also allowed me to snag the PS4 versions of AC4 and BF4 for just $10 each. In addition to all of this, my other new release games all cost $40 or less thanks to the aforementioned E3 Futureshop sale. 2013 was my best year ever for sales. It's 2014 and onwards that I'm concerned about.

In two years, we might be calling ourselves lucky to see a $0.90 dollar.

Toronto Dominion said:
"TD Economics expects that the factors which have taken the Canadian dollar lower are unlikely to shift over the next year or so," they said.

"Canada's economy is forecast to underperform the United States, interest rate hikes remain quite a ways off and the outlook for commodity prices is pretty flat, on average," they added in the study.

"In the near-term, the loonie is forecast to fall as low as 85 cents U.S. by mid-year. However, it is then expected to appreciate slightly as inflation in Canada starts increasing and the Bank of Canada gets closer to raising interest rates."

They expect to climb back to the 90-cent range in the second half of next year.

Well, it's more like a double-edged blade: it does help exports and foreign investments, but makes life more expensive when it comes to importing.
So, how much does Canada import?
How much does Canada export?
It's a dangerous economic tool, and that's why one of the first steps in the EU was to establish a common currency, to avoid countries exploiting the devaluing of their own currencies.

Sure it's a great tool for the US to stay competitive and especially considering their foreign debt.

I don't want to start an economics debate, just wanted to add my 2 cents as we're already experiencing the other side of the coin on our wallets (provided that games should be considered as imported goods?).
