Man.... These next couple of days is gonna be the scariest shit in this elections.

I expect very goonish behaviour from Harper. Maybe even trying to cheat like with the robocalls bs last election.

I'm actually scared at how things will turn out.

The UN is watching so if he wants to embarrass the nation, he can go right ahead. I'll be here eating popcorn.

It would be a mixed message if the paper says one thing and it's most prominent political editor says another.

And yet, if a newspaper has editorialists that is what they should expect to happen.

All of this just brings into question the value of newspapers in a world where they can't compete unless they conglomerate.

The only thing they can do is hope the NDP have some kind of magic bullet to save them in Quebec and the GTA to steal seats back from the Liberals. Maybe if Jack Layton somehow comes back to life.

This is why I'm wondering why a newspaper endorsement matters anyway in 2015. lol

The fact that Scott Brison kept his seat long after his "defection" is probably a sign that many PC/soft-CPC voters went Liberal a long time ago.

Exactly. But Maharg is saying -- if I'm not mistaken -- that there are enough of them who haven't gone Liberal that they still hold some sway in the CPC. I'm skeptical, but I imagine there are still plenty of those people in Alberta.

Well, on that end, I can't name a single PC turned CPC MP now... do they even still exist today?
And I don't remember, but didn't Reform wipe out the PC in Alberta?

The PC party basically ceased to exist in Alberta. Every part of the conservative apparatus in the west became Reform.

Wow. I think the Liberals might actually win this. I was expecting a CPC minority but with the way they're acting, it's clear that they are in grave danger and none of the polls have been on their side this week. I try to keep my expectations low to avoid heartbreak but I just can't think of any way for the CPC to win. Even Aussie slinked away.

What should we expect if the Liberals form a minority? When will parliament open and what will be the first bills that they pass?

They promised a few things immediately, I believe.

  • Syrian refugees (or maybe that was the NDP)
  • Investigation on missing and murdered Aboriginal women
Huh. That's all I can think of at the moment. :p

What will the NDP be able to get through with a Liberal minority? I'm obviously crossing my fingers for PR. But I also want national Pharmacare. I'm not expecting the daycare thing though. I wonder where the Liberals are at on national Pharmacare.

Ottawa police alert Muslim women after reports of verbal abuse
http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/ottawa-muslim-women-verbal-abuse-1.3273228
Ottawa police are asking Muslims to report "all forms of abuse" after three Muslim women reported being verbally harassed by strangers while wearing a head scarf, including one incident at a polling station......

"We're ensuring that these types of incidents are reported so we have a clear picture of what's happening and if there is a crime committed we need to investigate those incidents," Zackrias said. "If people are feeling intimidated and threatened, they should be reporting those incidents to police.

In one case, a woman was told to go back to her own country while she was voting, in another a woman was called a terrorist by a passerby downtown, said Amira

goodness the scare that CPC created in this country

If that happens to my mom, she'll tear them apart on the spot. She has very low tolerance for BS, lol. I hope the CPC pay for this after the election (and hopefully during!).

I should probably ask her if she's been getting dirty looks lately.

That's sad more than anything. (Assuming it's real. ...Y'never know.)

It's real. Bal Gosal is my MP, I live in his riding.

Here is the official Liberal response, revealing that the very people in the video are major campaign donors (Even pictured with PM Harper!): http://rameshsangha.liberal.ca/release-dishonest-conservative-campaigning-continues/

I called the office of Gosal to complain, they were already aware of the video and said, as expected, "They are no longer welcome here..We don't tolerate that behavior, etc etc." some people on reddit have posted similar horror stories about this guy's volunteers.

I called my local paper and the Toronto Star, the former was already made aware of it, the Star asked me to send an email with the links, etc.

I even filed an official complaint with Elections Canada.

This guy better lose. I refuse to accept this behaviour from someone who may represent me on a federal level.

Nice. Sounds like you were very thorough. I wish my CPC MP did that. Unfortunately, he doesn't have enough brain cells to think of something like that.

A TVA pundit repeated twice that Charest is salivating at taking on the leadership of the Conservatives.

Charest has lots of work because Harper scrapped the Progressive out of the PC Reform merger. Not much P left in that party now.
I wonder if it's wiser to try to take over the Conservative party, or have MPs split off and try to resurrect the PC party.

I dunno. Dedicated sports fans, "Joe Sixpack", tend to be Sun readers... in other words, conservative.

It'll mostly interfere with election coverage viewership.

The UN is watching so if he wants to embarrass the nation, he can go right ahead. I'll be here eating popcorn.
What's the UN going to do? Write Harper a strongly-worded letter?

I guess the one solace I take with the Globe endorsement is that I expect their readers to be more savvy than to accept that.

It wouldn't have bothered me if they endorsed the Tories, flat out -- might have surprised me a touch -- but this Frankendorsement has me actively annoyed... I just can't get it out of my head and it makes me angry. What kind of fantasy world do they live in in which they think that is helpful? Do they know some different Stephen Harper from the rest of Canada? Is the GLOBE MAD WITH POWER?

If we're at the point where the only discussion in politics is hand-wringing over the economy, I don't like the future we're heading towards. Everything is fair game as long as you're pushing a low tax, balanced-budget regime? Those are both noble ideas, but they're not all of what government is about.

I've said -- in this thread, I believe -- that I've been OK with periods of the Harper government. I think Canada had some good years while he was minority leader. I don't care for majority Harper.

I'm also cool to the notion that Harper had some great solution to steer us through the 2008 economic crisis, when a considerable part of the equation was Canada's conservative banking regulations and the relative stability of our financial institutions.

The government of the day didn't perform some magic to prevent the banking failures seen south of the border and in Europe. So while we took a hit from the global slowdown, parts of our country's financial machinery weren't crumbling the way they were elsewhere.

B62etjC.png

Above, a World Bank graph of annual GDP growth in Canada and the U.S. Notice how the Canadian economy -- while it maybe does better than the U.S. -- doesn't defy the American trend. People didn't lose their houses here and banks didn't shut down, but that speaks to those structural differences in the financial sector.

It is true, the economy is in a shaky place right now (perhaps more true for us than elsewhere, due to our oil dependence). But I see little evidence that the Liberals or NDP plan to be incredibly reckless -- but to read many pundits paint the picture, your choices are Tory or economic ruin. I guess I just don't believe that the Liberal or NDP platforms are capable of causing significant, irreparable harm to our country in four years.

Go check out Jeet Heer's Twitter timeline right now (twitter.com/heerjeet). The dude is making some pointed comments about Canadian media in general, using the Globe endorsement as a jumping point.

BTW, since I'm ranting, let me get it off my chest that I can't stand Jeet Heer. Twitter "essays" should not be a thing. People get all gooey over Norm Macdonald for that crap, too. Once in a while, when you've got a ton to say, OK. If they're you're calling card, you've chosen the wrong medium, JEET HEER.

That said, I think he raises good points about the Globe editorial (and I also think he often raises interesting takes on other topics). He just drives me nuts.

Sorry if some of this makes no sense, it just came out as a big-ass rant.

Holy shit if Andrew Coyne walks away from the National Post over this (which is completely understandable). This is shaping up to be one of the craziest elections ever.

Also, I love Jeet Heer's Twitter essays. So suck it, haters.

Email and company for that one guy in the video was very easy to find. Hopefully something is done about this. His business already has like 200 1-star reviews though, so not much further to fall.

Why is he giving any advice at all?

Have you actually read the letter? It's literally him explaining how government functions. Suggesting there's anything illegal in it -- as Mulcair is doing -- is ridiculous...though if he's that upset about it, it does make you wonder what his chief strategist is doing while advising both the NDP campaign and the Canadian Fuels Association.

Well, on that end, I can't name a single PC turned CPC MP now... do they even still exist today?
And I don't remember, but didn't Reform wipe out the PC in Alberta?

There was Mackay, the who guy sold out the PC Party. Nicholson was also a PC MP under Mulroney. For the most part, though, the Reform Party just absorbed the whole entity, like Maharg said.

Trudeau said the middle/working class tax cut would be first. I think he'd also order the MMIW investigation pretty quickly. And he'd at least name the electoral reform committee.

As for NDP proposals...childcare is out, since the NDP weren't even planning on implementing it until the second half of a second mandate. Maybe tie some of the NDP proposals into their infrastructure plan?

they elected 5 in 2011, and the Star has them jumping to 17 but their ceiling is 12 or 13.
I doubt they even break 11

I think they get about 10. Interestingly, one of my Quebecois coworkers insists that the Greens have a shot at a seat in Quebec -- Jici Lauzon in Pierre-Boucher-les Patriotes-Verchères. Thoughts?

It's the last page that offers some specific strategic advice. Regardless, they're all terrible. This is why it's so easy to be apathetic, because the people behind the scenes are all part of some business lobby or another - whatever the party.

I forgot about Rob Nicholson. Mackay retired though, so he doesn't count!

Huh. So Brett Butt -- the guy behind Corner Gas, who I'd assumed would be at least a small-c conservative based on what little of his comedy I've seen -- just posted this:

I don't know which party he's backing, but...I have to say, it's stirring up some patriotic emotions in me.

Such a beautiful graph..
it would've been more beautiful if the CPC hit zero

the one thing I took away from this election is that Harper may be bad but his lackeys are either idiots are just as bad

the whole party is vile to the core.....hopefully they'll never be significant in Canada again

I hate Corner Gas, but that can only be a good thing as Brett Butt has got to have some kind of sway with "old stock" Canadians.

I don't know if this has been posted before but an edmonton journal writer decided to talk about some of the tactics harper and the CPC have been using in this election and the stuff the CPC has been doing in government and to vote based on Canada's future
http://edmontonjournal.com/news/pol...ear-should-drive-edmonton-voters-to-the-polls

Paula Simons also had a really good Twitter essay when the Edmonton Journal endorsed the PCs without the editorial board's knowledge.
