Sure. But if you're living in downtown Toronto, he's not wrong. That isn't going to get you very far, if you plan on buying even a beat up fixer upper in a shady neighbourhood.

He's not wrong, no -- $200k in downtown Toronto or Vancouver isn't very much.

But he's also being fundamentally dishonest in most of his other claims, which is the broader issue.

lol

Ok. So what? What's so magic about the "1%". This discussion on income reminds me of the thread about wealth-shaming...

I remember that thread.

The author in the link from the OP was trying to relate being rich as equivalent to being gay and that rich people have to hide in the "closet" about their wealth. Which I can't even comprehend, rich people aren't being killed or jailed for being rich so what point are you trying to bring up here?

There's also no law saying you have to live in downtown Toronto if you make that much. Even if you work there, 200k a year will easily get you a place outside the core.

yeah I got my driver's license. that's the primary or whatever. the secondary asks for two pieces and one has to have an address and name on it and the only thing I have with my address on it is a pay stub. everything else is name only. Thanks, heading out in a bit
Having your driver's license is enough. It has both your photo and address. The next category is when you do not have an official document with both a photo and an address. In this case a passport (photo) and a utility invoice, or a bank statement will suffice (there are many more that qualify as the second piece of ID). You can find this information at elections.ca

Cheers

Won't someone think of those poor million+ dollar home owning, hottest real estate market in the country living, mercedes driving families just scraping by?

Lol, on radio i just learn that Trudeau is born a 25th December in the 24 Sussex.

He is the Canadian Jesus  xD!

That is ironic actually. Maybe he was destined to be prime minister eventually.

Also does anyone think the one independent that coyne predicted will win a seat is Brent Rathgeber

You could just live in the suburbs and commute downtown like us upper-middle class scrubs do
*shrugs*

Because that's how I feel here. Being shamed because I happen to be affected by the tax increases, which is a very legitimate reason to shun the Liberals. But seeing as it's going against the grain...

In my line of work, you need to be within 15-30 minutes tops of your workplace. So it pretty much rules out living outside of the immediate core unless you have the technology to teleport yourself.

You only need your driver's licence.

We're not shaming you, we're saying your math is bad. There's a difference. If you're feeling ashamed of how much money you make, that's on you.

Seems like you need to negotiate a cost of living increase then. I don't see why the middle class needs to support your ability to do that.

Hopefully that wasn't sarcasm... thank you.

I get it. Believe me, I got plenty even in my workplace, where there is a 8 figure difference between top and bottom.

I thought you said you're living in the UK right now. If you think 200k is nothing in Toronto...I'm sure you already know about London.

And economic policy isnt the only problem with the conservatives. Like others have said, it's literally everything else. Stifling information and science means our economy is less equipped to compete globally. The government should be investing like crazy into new tech and innovation, that's how the economy grows. It's a massive plus for the Liberals.

You're not being shamed for having the income, you're being shamed because you made statements like 200K is "nothing", implying that is a normal wage for middle class Canadians.

Which, news flash, is a fuck ton of money..

To me this election isn't about the economy, budgets or tax brackets. Its about Harper's policies on the environment, foriegn policy, TPP, C-51, CBC, the secretive and authoritive way he runs his office, and the dangerous powers he seeks to give law enforcement. I'm actually at the point now where I'm willing to suffer financially just to put an end to this.

That's 200k individual income. We don't tax households in Canada. Either your spouse works or stays home, but either way that'll offset childcare costs.
Ah, those are all good points. I was thinking household income (because that's all I focus on at work). Oops. Yeah, $200k individual income is pretty comfy.

I don't understand, even if you are making 1 million dollars, i don't think it's possible to actually be taxed 50%. If 750k of that was taxed 50%, that would be 375k, plus the tax on the first 250k which would be what... Let's round up to 40%, so 100k. That's combined taxes of 475k, still less than 50 (and also unrealistically high, this is just to prove a point however). Even if the top bracket was 55% let's say, you'd have to make a looooot of money to have 50% of your income taxed, and it would be zombie land wiping years with dollar bills levels of out of touch to complain about that.

How many people do you think it really takes to get something trending on Twitter in Canada? My guess is not many.

Pretty much. It's super easy to get something trending, but if something is trending it doesn't always indicate the suppport for it outside of the internet.

Most financial advisers say that you should be spending no more than 28% of your total monthly gross pay on housing. If you're making $200,000 yearly before taxes, your monthly gross is $16,600, which means you should only be spending $4,640 on your mortgage / taxes.

An average Toronto home is $640,000. Even if you do not put any money down, a 30-year mortgage would cost you $3,050 monthly. That means that to afford a Toronto home and live comfortably even without paying any money down, you would only need to be making $130,714 yearly before taxes.

So yeah, if you're making $200,000 you're fucking rich as hell.

308 has Mulcair trailing by 3 points in Outremont

The Star has him trailing by 6 points.

Hubris

There have been no riding polls done on that riding. Stop taking anything either of those sites say as gospel. We don't know the strength of either the Liberal or NDP camapigns in Outremont.I think 308 will be off a bit or a lot in some ridings.I expect the star to off in a lot of ridings. There's a chance you may be burned hard in in a few hours and he may keep his seat.

Oh, anecdotal evidence here, but I remember several years ago that some financial planners were advising married couples to max out one person's income on their mortgage to maximize their returns... which in hindsight would be incredibly risky. o_o

ksharp: How can you support a government that destroys its own ability to gather information and systematically dismantles the parts of the government that exist to speak hard truths to power (the statisticians and scientists most obviously)? How can a government make good choices if it has made it impossible to have good data?

This one is so fundamentally insane. Would you trust the recommendations of a doctor won't even examine you and then destroys your medical history?

They'd be fucking banned from practicing medicine.
