So dont provide them with a noose and we force them to live on against their will, force them to live every excruciating minute of the life sentence theyve been judged upon.

Whos the barbaric one?

why is it that there's always some unspecified system in europe that's better than ours but no one actually specifically mentions what and why

Why don't you use Wikipedia? It's more commonly known as Civil Law (not to be confused with the one in Common Law). Canada has two legal systems, and Civil Law is used in Quebec.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civil_law_(legal_system)

It holds legislation as the primary source of law, and the court system is usually inquisitorial, unbound by precedent, and composed of specially trained judicial officers with a limited authority to interpret law.

You can also look at France's system: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inquisitorial_system

They did the crime, now they have to do the time.

I feel like suicide would be a cop-out, an easy way out, for those guys who have life sentences, plus no chance of getting a parole (like serial-killers/rapists). Let them rot their cell. That's what some one the guys in there deserve after all.

Just a quick question: why do we do so much to keep inmates from killing themselves? Is it just in case the suicide tools can be used against other inmates? I mean, it's not like rope is banned from public sale. Do you lose the right to kill yourself when you commit a crime?

Is there any precedent where an inmate pleaded for the right to kill himself (or to be killed) ?

His daughter was raped and murdered.

That doesn't give him the right to make such statements publicly and not have to face up to the backlash afterwards, especially as an elected member of parliament. He suggested that as a serious cost-saving measure, and the Prime Minister had his back on it. Fuck them both.

Now the news is going around waving a 'capital punishment debate' story around. Canada's record on wrongful conviction and eventual exoneration in the last 20 years doesn't speak highly of opening up such a debate.

Give a convicted murderer something which can be used as a weapon. What a brilliant idea.

FYI, canadian Senator doesn't mean anything.

They get appointed by the Prime Minister and can serve until they are 75 years old. They have no plotical power and act as political puppets for the current administration.

Canada is a democracy with really, horribly undemocratic institutions.

Also, fuck that guy.

They have the power to block/kill legislation based on that lifetime appointment. In this guys case, he'll be helping pas that ridiculous omnibus crime bill the Cons are pushing through.

This is completely illogical to me. If they really do have life sentences with no parole then from a societal standpoint the only difference between keeping them alive or letting them kill themselves is if we have to keep paying for them.

However I still hesitate to say I support this.

Awesome on crime

This. Fucking murderers should end themselves, reusable rope, environmentally friendly, saves us the bullets.

We don't really know if the Shafia family have no possibility of rehabilitation.

They killed four members of THEIR OWN FAMILY, I don't give a FUCK about the possibility of rehabilitation, they should end themselves, it's the only way to regain their honor.

Killing yourself is a crime, maaaaan.

It's a sin, not a crime, and how are they going to punish you for killing yourself when you're dead?

Follow-up and context

Mr. Boisvenu did a round of interviews after his initial comments were published, releasing a statement to apologize “if his comment offended people whose close ones committed suicide.”

Despite the climb-down, Mr. Boisvenu’s comments were seen as hurting suicide-prevention efforts.

“He is seriously underestimating the reach of his words for people who are in a state of distress,” said Bruno Marchand, director-general of the Quebec Association for the Prevention of Suicide.

Mr. Marchand added that Mr. Boisvenu’s comments stand to fuel the risk of suicide among inmates who already feel “useless,” and could affect people facing financial or marital problems.

Mr. Boisvenu’s remarks come after two high-profile prison suicides in Quebec. Paul Laplante, who was recently charged with the 2008 murder of his wife, was found dead at a prison in Ste-Anne-des-Plaines, Que., last month. A few days later, Kathrine Dufresne, who was charged with murdering her adopted daughter last year, killed herself in a prison cell in Gatineau, Que.

Also, his initial quote as quoted was

“I’m against the death penalty, but in horrible cases such as [serial killer Clifford] Olson, can we have a reflection on that issue?” the senator said.

I think there's really only 3 people in Canada in recent memory who would have qualified. Clifford Olson (who died of natural causes last year), Robert Pickton and Paul Bernardo.

Not that it makes any sense to give a psychopath a weapon like a noose, or that they should self-select to hang themselves.

Maybe Canada can legalize euthanasia and the worst of the worst lifer criminals can petition to end their life early if they so choose. But even that is a non-starter in terms of letting someone essentially under the power of the state to decide suicide. Imagine if this was applied to political dissidents.

Yeah, the guards will love discovering and disposing of all the prisoners who hang themselves. It's sure to do wonders for their humanity and mental health.

I believe there is a case before the Supreme Court of one of the provinces or the SCOC arguing for euthanasia to be legalized
