Cancel culture appears to be losing steam

Eyebrows raised particularly high reading these two headlines yesterday. Are we suddenly back to being reasonable adults again, after roughly a decade of mass hysteria?

I think it's been losing steam for while, it's just now at the point companies are no longer terrified of the online harassment mob if they don't bend to their will. Or at least they've lost enough money doing so that they realize it ain't worth it.

Now, give Louis CK his show back. Him getting fucked over so hard pissed me off and was the event, for me, that shone a light on what these people were really after: power, not justice.

hahahaha you louis ck GIF

I think it's a mix of the following below:

A) Opportunists will always side with the winner. Companies and artists who thought 'woke' was the popular thing joined the woke BECAUSE they thought it was popular. Now that they see it's not, they backpedal fast because it turned out to be a financial disaster.

B) There were people who were always afraid of wokeness, but they feared the cancellation of the majority if they spoke out. Now that they see the majority is anti-woke, they are braver to denounce it.

Some people mistakenly think that wokeness is a new thing. It's not. What's new, was the support it recently received from legacy media which were hijacked themselves by the woke a decade ago. That, in conjunction with social media which amplified the voices of the woke, was enough to intimidate many companies into silence and allegiance.

There were always woke people. The difference is that up to the mids of 2010 those people were mocked and ignored, instead of listened to, applauded and placed on a pedestal.

Are you telling me that talking down to other people for buying and playing Hogwarts Legacy (while secretly buying and playing it myself) wasn't a strong enough message?

Real talk - I don't follow all the JK updates, but it's interesting to me. Checking her Twitter, it looks like she has a pretty extreme feminist point of view which colors her perspective on trans stuff. In a normal world, you'd think the left would be more willing to listen to a powerful feminist voice like her's, but here we are.

On another note, trans stuff seems to be all she talks about now? How did we get here? Is she just bored or something?

Best I can tell the mtf trans athletes being allowed to compete against women really pissed her off. And her being a hard-core feminist that's not afraid to speak her mind means she's going to defend what she views as an afront to equality for women. She probably also gets lots of questions, comments and trolls on the topic due to her views.

this is almost entirely because of Elon buying twitter.

if the cancel-pigs still had the power they did at twitter, no one would step out of line. That sort of canceling became completely normalized and expected. Just to give you perspective twitter actually fucking banned people for saying "learn to code" they we're completely drunk on power just a couple years ago.

True another indicator nature is healing…Disney, WB and other brands are resuming ads on Xitter

Just for perspective on how fast this sort of thing has flipped, New York Times ran this ad two yearsa go:

The election broke a lot of these "people" and normies are not as afraid of them as they once were.

I don't even understand that image. Why does Jabba the Hutt care about Harry Potter?

Just like big business is realizing they're losing money when listening to the crazies, now Democrats are realizing they lost the election because regular folks wouldn't want to vote for a party that looked like characters from a Portlandia sketch.

Cancel culture, DEI, the whole "what is a woman" debate and trans athletes, BLM, social justice ... all those things are shifting back to normalcy. That's why that Jaguar ad is so ridiculed, it's suddenly out of touch with the new vibe..

Maher represents 'sensible liberalism' which is where the dems have to return to if they ever want to run America again.

The JKR stuff was actually what opened my eyes a bit to the whole situation. I couldn't find one thing she said which was offensive against trans people. She literally said a trans woman is a "trans woman" and not a "woman", and that she happily fights for trans rights as well.

If that causes some global outrage I was shocked TBH.

She's actually stated that trans women are actually men and not women at all in any sense of the word. She's even posted memes of that.

I'm not saying to cancel her of course but she does not believe in trans women are women at all.

gotta say, that rowling stuff surprised me. Especially coming from Zaslav-HBO. But it's a welcome surprise for sure.

As you also know, I've had a trans woman roommate for almost exactly 9 months (November 24th will be nine) and fwiw, I really like her but she thinks JKR is literally going to get trans women killed.

I love how you've been counting the days literally. Tell your roommate that people who had issues like saying everyone is going to be murdered because of children book authors they've never met before used to be sent to mental asylums.

In regards to Rowling, I think the nonsense surrounding Hogwarts Legacy opened the eyes of a lot of people, and was probably a factor in the pendulum swinging back because normal hardworking people were demonized just for playing a goddamn videogame. It was absolute madness.

Hopefully.

I don't think cancelling is bad. It just developed to a point where every tiny thing can get you cancelled.

Innocent before proven guilty seems to have left people's collective consciousness. Caution is good but I'm glad we're leaving the time where people are jumping at shadows.

I live around a bunch of Trump supporters and funny enough all of them that met her actually like her. My family friends down the street even actually adore her (said she is very pretty and intelligent which fwiw is true) after she helped fixed their computer issue. They're even making Thanksgiving dinner for the both of us next Thursday.

What you say here is no different from what DGrayson said.

Trans women = trans women = men
Trans women are not women, they are trans women, which basically means they are men who identify as women and this is really it.
If the skeleton of a trans woman is found in 1000 years from now, it will be identified as male. The feelings and beliefs of the person will not be relevant.

She sounds wonderful and having views opposed yours in your circle is always a good thing. I'm sure it's very helpful to her when you say what you think on the matter is. If she was surrounded by people who think like her she might not be getting the fawning accolades that your family gave her.

Moral of the story is disagree with your friend's don't distant yourself from them on what they think. You're more likely to go down a wrong path when good people aren't around you.

When people are pushed so heavily in one direction they can start giving more push back than they ever did before.

I've looked through all of the original tweets and the anti-JK stuff was so wildly unjustified, but that inevitably landed JK in a position where she was celebrated by people who feel defended by her and so she started helping them more. At the same time, when she's rejected by a huge swathe of people the ones that still happily engage are more likely to be anti-"that".

It's what happens when people get angry instead of engaging in rational discussion. Divides get larger and nothing gets better.

Quite ironic that the trans roommate would literally get you killed by not giving a damn when you’re condemned to the streets with nothing to your name.

Hope the situation’s been sorted out, best of luck going forward.

Maher is always late to the party when it comes to contentious issues. Like he'll toe the line for a while and even advocate certain things, but then switch when it loses steam. Hard for me to trust the guy, but at least he's helping.

I met some liberal women that keep copies of harry potter but swear they hate her guts. Weird as hell. I had to tell one straight up that JKR has actually done a ton more for women than any other woman in recent history, and she should be ashamed for being such a hater.

As for cancel culture, it's beginning to have more of a backwards effect in the general public, instead of simply shifting to the other side of the aisle. Getting canceled is the new going viral. Things will still take another year or so before the dust settles, but it's about time people stop and actually listen.

I find it laughable when people say trans folk don’t get enough support.

What a crying shame violence against women doesn’t get this much support.

Feels like Rowling is one of the only ones trying to redress the balance, and history will judge her rightly for that.

Sadly I don't think its going anywhere, people have gotten power and money from Cancel culture, they will do what they always do and double down.

Even if it did go away tomorrow, 10 years of damage will take 10 years to fix.

Please dont post opinions of this loser that lives like a pig, with his mom still while making millions, barely ever leaves the house and is socially awkward. I dont think any normal person with friends, relationships and their own apartment shoud listen to what this hermit has to say about life. Not to mention all he does nowadays is react to other peoples video.
