At this point I'm not surprised when someone says something causes cancer. Everything does by the sound of it.

And I use the Paul Mitchell Tea Tree shaping cream for my hair....shit.

These chemicals only cause cancer when they give super massive doses of them to mice. People never use anything close to doses this big in their shampoos and soaps, and the tiny doses they do use are harmless. The overall cancer rate has been steady forever. The only product that has really increased cancer rates is cigarettes.

See I'm not seeing any overly credible sources. And anecdotes aren't scientific data. There seem to be numerous users of H&S not going bald.

Also recessive traits could lead to them going bald.

LOL. I use Dr. Bronners for soap, and an olive oil shampoo and conditioner where I can actually tell what all the (few) (natural) ingredients are.

Weird how they work better than that bullshit with 40 artificial chemicals.

My girlfriend got me on shampoo bars which are just simple soaps with some nice smelling things thrown in. Pretty much all commercial shampoos have unnecessary chemicals in it that maybe be bad for you and bad for hair, you just need something to break surface tension to remove excess oils. You then do a rinse of deluded vinegar which removes residue and helps to seal the hair follicle.

Ironically it's perhaps cheaper to go this way too as commercial shampoos and conditioners are expensive. Anyone interested we order from here: http://www.chagrinvalleysoapandsalve.com/

You could also not use shampoo but you'll probably wind up with greasy hair because of too much oil, certainly not a health problem but perhaps not the most presentable and your head may start smelling (just because you don't notice it...). The hardest core don't even get their head wet and try to use only their own scalp oils for moisture. So don't be afraid to ditch traditional shampoo, it's really just marketing.

I used to use one of those Equate ones for dandruff but I think I only used like a few bottles of it over the course of a few years.

I found one of my shampoos has cocamide MEA. That was close. Right?

Everything causes cancer.

Pretty much, it's just that the body is very resilient to mutagens, but it's gonna take its toll when one is about 65 years old.

How about the list of ones with parabens, sulfates, fragrance, and all the other garbage these companies put in them?

On, that's right... It's almost all of them.

You seem awfully fond of the naturalistic fallacy these days.

oh no!!! scary names! sulfates!!!!!

Soon also to be found in artificial meat.

Just sayin'. :p

Artificial cloned meat can be more natural than non-artificial meat, since non-artificial meat is often given growth hormones, and is raised on a diet of GMO corn or other GMO feed. Cloned meat is just natural muscle tissue.

Glad to see you learned nothing from the cloned meat thread though. :)

So the chemical is cocamide diethanolamine.

My hair care products say they contain cocomidopropyl betaine.

I wonder how related the two are.

Wikipedia said:
Cocamide DEA, or cocamide diethanolamine, is a diethanolamide made by reacting the mixture of fatty acids from coconut oils with diethanolamine.

Wikipedia said:
Cocamide MEA, or cocamide monoethanolamine, is a solid, off-white to tan compound, often sold in flaked form. The solid melts to yield a pale yellow viscous clear to amber liquid. It is a mixture of fatty acid amides which is produced from the fatty acids in coconut oil when reacted with ethanolamine.

Wikipedia said:
Cocamidopropyl betaine (CAPB) is an organic compound derived from coconut oil and dimethylaminopropylamine.[1] It is a zwitterion, consisting of both a quaternary ammonium cation and a carboxylate. CAPB is available as viscous pale yellow solution that is used as a surfactant in personal care products. The name reflects that the major part of the molecule, the lauric acid group, is derived from coconut oil. Cocamidopropyl betaine to a significant degree has replaced cocamide DEA.

All three seem to be used as foaming agents.

I've so had it with the cancer scaremongers. EVERYTHING seems to cause cancer.

Maybe we should stop using this "EVERYTHING" that cause cancer. It's not like we HAVE to use these fuckin' chemicals in everything we use or are exposed to on a daily basis. How much of this kind of stuff is just attributed to pure greed on a corporate level?

Except these chemicals aren't proven in the least to cause cancer.

They don't cause cancer unless you use a ridiculously massive dose that no one will ever use. It's bs. Cells dividing causes cancer. Cancer has been around since the beginning of time.

Ed Harper of NC asking "does using a dandruff shampoo (i.e. Head and Shoulders) every day contribute to baldness" does not a reputable citation make.
