Can't find a DS? Don't listen to EB/Gamestop lies! Head to Target!

Worried about the EB scare tactics that DS is sold out until Febuary 2005? Worried you won't be one of the dozens upon dozens of DS fans this year? Well I have wonderful news for you. Check out your local Target stores. I just made a quick stop there to grab some amenities and decided to stop by the electronics section to see how the DS was selling. Well, to my surprise, there were a crapload of them in the electronics case. And so I got the facts right, I counted exactly how many Target had. And the number is:

35! That's right. Not 3. Not 5. 35!

Don't listen to the lies and deceit, for I have brought forth empirical evidence that the nation is not responding positively to Nintendos new portable. But at the same time, I am doing a service to those of you who want a system and got fooled by EB and Gamestop clerks claiming they aren't out there to be found! Remember, when you pick up your DS thanks to my info, you don't have to personally thank me. Doing a service for this forum is thanks enough!

It's not deceit. We've been told that our company has halted pre-orders on the handheld until February. Now, if employees tell walk-ins they won't get one ANYWHERE until Feb. then that's a lie. But as far as the company line goes, which is likely bullshit but it's what we're told to say, we won't have any extras until next year.

EB and Gamestop will tell you that [insert hyped system/game/accessory here] is "selling out everywhere," (or some variation thereof) just to get you to pre-order.

It's shady as fuck, seriously.

Well if you are going to buy them from a store, now is the time before Black Friday hits. Unless you want to fight through a ton of soccer moms to get one.

I'm most likely not going to touch the DS (har) until after the new year. The launch line-up is all kinds of meh, at least as far as I'm concerned.

I agree, I don't do anything like that. I do think it's important to mention that if a person is sure they want to get it, however, it is worth reserving. It's a small deposit, it comes off the price of the game, and you don't have to battle with crowds or the possibility of not finding one. But yeah, outright lying is stupid, and I hate it. It just gives all salespeople bad reputations.

I picked up my DS from the new Brooklyn Target. I bought the 2nd to last unit (first come first serve) and there was a pretty long line of disappointed (or soon to be disappointed) folk behind me.

I don't mind the reservation process, but that is reserved for hot items.

:lol

Hey, do you even play games you buy anymore? Or just collect them?

There were none at the Target near me today. They apparently sold out very quickly. The same goes for the local Wal-Mart, K-Mart, and Toys R' Us.

I've been playing LOTS of MP2E, SM64DS, and Feel the Magic, most recently. Games I've purchased and instantly shelved: Half-Life 2, Metal Gear Solid 3, Baten Kaitos (to be unshelved as soon as MP2E is done), Shin Megami Tensei 3 Nocturne (started, will get back to it soon), LotR Third Age (started, won't get back to it anytime soon), Viewtiful Joe 2, Bard's Tale, Donkey Kong Country 2 GBA, Mario Power Tennis (play sporadically, mostly shelved), and Technic Beat. World of Warcraft, Pirates!, and Battle for Middle Earth are all incoming, but they will be auto-shelved too.

It's just, there are WAY too many games.

I haven't tried my local Target or K-Mart, but Wal-Mart last night had very few, maybe 5 at the most. Plus they only had 3 games to choose from. So I'm not willing to bet you can just go around to your local chain store and expect units. The online situation is already enough to say otherwise. I think we would have had a good chance of these stores to have a nice amount online if this were the case.

Oddly enough, my Wal-Mart let me layaway a unit. So if you feel you want to get one, but don't have the cash and fear of a sell out. Get one at wal-mart if they have any, layaway it, and pick it up a few weeks later. Good idea if you're going to want to give the DS as a Christmas gift as well. Just hope they have a unit left, call ahead of time.

You went to that new BK Target? Heh, I was there Saturday trying to pricematch on that Ace Combat 5 deal. :D

Did they say when they're getting more DSes?
Did they have games in?

Oh man overload! :lol

After you beat MP2:E (Unless you give up on it :lol) you should play Half Life 2. It is the best game in your list.

BK Target?

They had all the games in stock too.

By the time I got there (around 4:30pm Sunday afternoon), they had two DS systems left (I got one of 'em), 5 Feel the Magics, and THAT'S IT. Every other game was sold out. (Curiously, the Gamestop one floor down had some SM64s in, and for walk in customers too! Most of the stores I visited in Manhattan, and even one by me in Park Slopes had games for preorder customers only.) I picked up my Mario in that Gamestop.

My DS has a dead pixel, so I called Target yesterday, that very day, to ask about an exchange or a refund. No refunds on hardware allowed, but I do have 90 days to exchange. They get shipments of product every day, but have no way of knowing what they get until it arrives. I'm going to stop by the Target after work tomorrow in hope of making a swap. I'll post here (or in the official thread) what happens.

I won't give up on MP2E, it's my GotY so far. Well, that or Paper Mario 2 (which I also completed.) You're gonna laugh even harder now. My computer is NOWHERE near powerful enough to run HL2 or WoW... it can't even run the relatively low-maintenence Pirates!! Hahahahah.

Hmmm, dead pixels seem to be proficient with DS hardware. If anything, Nintendo hardware always is solid. What has happened with the DS? I've read tons of complaints about dead pixels in DS systems.

I'm 98% sure I'd be able to catch a cab to the Wal-Mart down the road and get a DS if I wanted one. I mean, it's the Wal-Mart in New Minas, Nova Scotia, Canada.

Seriously, now, if they sold out of DS systems, that would be so very surprising. Unless they only got in two.

No clue. 1 GBC, 2 GBAs, 2 GBA SPs... and nary a problem. My run of luck with hardware recently has been downright TRAGIC. Between a slew of faulty iPods and now my DS. Ugh.

Edit for Lockii. Fuck that class shit. I've got a dull red pixel in the middle of the primary gameplay screen that's dead as hell. This unit is going back for an exchange, one way or another.

Dead pixels are common with every LCD product on the market, so much so they have a class system to determine whether or not items can be returned.

Ding.

Secondly, did you follow the SP launch? The dead pixel problem was much much more wide. Plus there were issues with dust under the screen thanks to the front-lit displays. These problems are nothing new, and you can expect dead pixels to be found on LCD monitors, PDAs, kids toys, and even the PSP.

Mrbob said:
Yeah but those class systems are for biggers screen I thought (Like 15" +) and not for 3" screens?
No, the problem is lessened a bit since smaller screens have far less number of total pixels. Search around google for forum posts, you can easily find reports of dead pixels on PDAs and other little handhelds.

The point being Nintendo doesn't have a class system in place. I purchased a 17" Samsung LCD late last year and there was no less then 13 dead pixels on the screen, some in clumps of 2 or 3. It's just a staple of the industry.

Seems EXTREMELY common with this launch. Nice.

obviously easy to find. some DS auctions are even ending on ebay without any bids.

Wow. Wasn't there someone on this forum who planned on selling a ton of DS systems and selling them on ebay? :lol

The funny thing is, even though I expect the DS to sell out by Friday, is that if it gets a 99.9% sell-through rate, the resulting GAF thread would be troll heaven, with special appearances by Drinky, MAF, Mrbob and if we're lucky, a guest appearance from Snapty.

"OMG! I FOUND A DS! SUCK IT, NBOTS!"
"PICS INCLUDED: DS BOMB BOMB!"

I went to Target after work on Sunday to see if they had any DS accessories (I had gotten my DS at GameStop that morning). They had some AC adapters and cases, but no systems. Oh no, my anecdotal evidence supports the game store lies!

When i bought my DS at Target 8am Sunday morning, there was only one other dooder there to pick his up.

UH OH

I've been to TWO targets, and both of them had at least 20 DS systems that I could see. It almost looked like I was the 1st person to buy one sunday night at 10ish. If someone needs one, I'll buy it for them at cost+shipping.

A buddy of mine in my hometown of Kenora, ON (15k people) got DS systems in at the Zellers there ... but no games. Not a single one. So he's been stuck playing the MP:H demo, heh.

hey i've PM'd you :P

This forum is tragic.

Mrbob should get paychecks cut by SONY at this point. He does more work for them before 9am...aw fuck it.

Tragic. It would however be ok over at GameFAQS....

I like Society's terminology, so turn off your N Chip and realize that this is a help thead. In fact, a DS system has been sold thanks to my good deed.

Yeah I got some shit for that plan on here, but in the end I decided that the demand wouldn't be high enough. EB and Gamestop had said on their websites that the first shipment was sold out only two weeks ago. To me, that was a red flag that demand wasn't too high. Looking at eBay now, it seems to be hit and miss, some DS's go unbid upon and others went for over $200, which is what I was looking for. Lookis like I made the right call.

That was Delta.

I could see this plan working as it gets closer to christmas, though. I will be VERY surprised if the DS isn't sold out in December.

Transparent...but as long as you believe it.

Have fun!

I'm in iowa. I've never seen anything gaming related sell out here, EVER. When the N64 was IMPOSSIBLE to find that Xmas, they were sitting on the shelf here. So was the PS2. Along with every game... yeah. Never ever not been able to find what I wanted.

yeah... I mean, stuff can be hard to find, sometimes. It's not like every store will have a ton of every system. It's just that with a little shopping, the systems can ALWAYS be found.

i just bought one on ebay for $30 more than i would pay with liksang - my preorder with them was looking like it wasnt going to arrive for quite some time.. 3-5 day courier shipping... cant wait to get my mitts on it :D

Yeah, same situation where I live. Wal-Mart is packed with DS's, and when I went their yesterday they still had at least 10-15 DSs left. Target had a similar situation. The only places by me that are "sold out" are gaming-only stores like EB and Gamestop.

But I really think that Black Friday shoppers will change this.
