Hello everyone! I can't update windows xp or any software on my laptop. Secured sites that use ssl security are not showing up either. I really don't know what's causing the problem, it could be a virus or something. Can someone tell me critical services that should be automatic in the service.msc? I followed blackvipers guide twice and everything checked out! What's causing this damn problem? I can't use bit torrent, update firefox or anything >_<

Pardon me if I offend you, but is this a pirated version. If so a couple weeks ago MS released an update that verified if your copy was real and wouldn't allow those that came back as piratd to update. If you have a legit copy then it could be that you have a virus as some will disable update so that in the event MS releases a fix you can't get to it.

neah man, windows xp came with my laptop. I already installed that ms update on my desktop, I don't pirate stuff. I can't update ANYTHING. I can't update firefox, IBM service that downloads drivers, ad-aware or any other software.

Sounds like a possible TCP/IP corruption... but that's a long shot.

Hey thanks for posting all that.

First the microsoft instructions are confusing as hell and I am totally lost with that.
Second, I dowloaded the software in your second link and that didn't do anything.
Third - I downloaded Avast and it found no viruses, Spybot found a bunch of minor stuff
Fourth - It's not an Internet problem, I already use Firefox on my laptop. Like I said before software is unable to update, bit torrent isn't working etc so it's not an Internet explorer problem.

1) Yes, MS instructions are often confusing.
2) OK, noted.
3) Hrm, OK.
4) It's not an Internet problem. It's a networking problem. Something in your XP install has killed part of your networking stuff. It's rarer than most problems, but still occurs.

Are you running a firewall?

You could have been hit by a virus, backdoor trojan, worm, or some nasty spyware - and yes, your virus protection might not have caught it. Virus scanners catch what can be identified by the scanning companies, but often they can't identify something until it's out in the wild for some time, maybe three to six months. They're good tools, but don't put all of your faith in them.

Also, be sure to consistently run a virus scanner after you get this fixed. Installing it after you've been infected is too late. You'll run the risk of the virus detecting the scanner and infecting or disabling it.

At this point, my advice to you is backup and reinstall from a Windows CD, not a rescue disc.
