Capcom Is The GOAT

Normally threads I make have a poll. This one doesn't. It's not even up for debate.

It's a royal Capcom circle jerk thread.

Have they had their moments of slip ups? Sure. But think about companies that used to be the goats and how far they've fallen. Blizzard, Bethesda, SquareEnix, Bioware, etc. Companies that had iconic franchises and characters all but left in the realm of nostalgia.

Then you have Capcom who not only has arguably the biggest pool of iconic franchises and characters in the industry, but keeps feeding players new entries, remakes, remasters, and new IPs. For every RE remake there is a game like Exoprimal, and for every new Monster Hunter, you get a risk like a Dragon's Dogma 2 or a fan service megaman legacy collection. The portfolio is staggering for all the genres they touch and do so damn well. Oh, and an in house engine that blows past the competition? Yes please.

Not only do they deliver on what players want these games review well, leave great impressions with actual players, and sell well. Capcom has withstood everything the industry has thrown at it for all these years and remained a beacon of excellence.

Praise be.

Some Key Franchises:
Megaman
Street Fighter
Marvel vs Capcom
Devil May Cry
Resident Evil
Monster Hunter
Ace Attorney
Onimusha
Okami
Viewtiful Joe
Dragon's Dogma

Always enjoyed their Resident Evil games with the exception of a few. The RE comeback since RE7 onward have been really good. Super hyped to see what their next announced RE game would be like whether it's another remake or RE9.

Ive come to respect them more over the past few years (since RE2Remake)

They will never get my full respect for what they did to Lost Planet.

Capcom has always been one of the best out there, pretty much from the 8-bit era onwards. Their darkest hour was during the 7th gen, which they still began promising with their MT Framework engine being one of the few Japan located developers that got along well with HD development. Their rate of output was good, and started out impressive with Dead Rising. But then they got a fascination with western co-op games, and chased this trend to mixed results. They ran some franchises in the ground, notably DMC, Lost Planet and Dead Rising. 2 of those IP were just conceived during this gen. They cancelled MM Legends 3. Resident Evil hit a low point with 6, and 5 already disappointed a lot of long timers though the game was succesful. Still, they did have some good games like Dragons Dogma and SFIV.

But they rebounded. Resident Evil 7 was top quality, RE2R was excellent. DMC5 was good. Monster Hunter translated well to consoles. SFV was a dud at first though. From PS4 onward they are back on track, with some misfires like Exoprimal. I hope Pragmata will become a thing.

They need to get a grip on the shitty PC ports. DD2 was fucking dogshit.
DD2 is really the only shitty PC port though isn't it? I've played all the RE games on PC day one without issues for example. DMC 5 ran flawless too. Exoprimal on gamepass was without hitches.

DD2 seems to be the outlier oddly.

Like my dad used to say "you're only as good as your last port."

I think they’ve been subpar lately.

RE4 remake was a massive disappointment to me. Sorry, GAF.
Their remaster of Dead Rising is a complete inferior version full of censorship and worst graphic technology compared to the original release.
Dragons Dogma does absolutely nothing for me and is a jank swamp.
Village was a resident evil through a Tim Burton theme park lens with no horror.
Tekken 8 is a much better fighter than Street Fighter.

I don’t know. I find them super overrated at the moment.

Not gonna lie, back in 05-06, when I first saw this, I was fucking mezmorized. Lost Planet was one of my top experiences on the 360. I think at one point for about a year it was my GOAT. Brought the Alien Invasion genre to life in videogame form. Fantastic single player game, amazing bosses, still one of my favs.

Then they decided to change the tone completely in the sequels, and make it multuplayer/co-op focused.. which you can say is not their expertise. Tried to be a western game and they fucking ruined it. Now the franchise is dead.

And they'd rather remake every single RE game in existence than give us a simple Lost Planet: Remastered

Who can compete?

Don't say Nintendo. They do not have the same output as Capcom at this point.
Honestly, when I think Capcom I'm more a fan of their classic franchises than most of their current stuff. I get that modern RE and Dragons Dogma and whatnot has its fans, but when I think Capcom its absolutely Megaman, Street Fighter Marvel Vs XX, Darkstalkers, Ghosts and Goblins, etc etc etc and to a lesser extent Monster Hunter and Ace Attorney that I've had fun with periodically. Modern Capcom is overly reliant on the RE series honestly.

Yeah, their current output is high, but doesn't do me much good if it's high output of stuff I don't really care about. If I'm thinking GOAT I'm thinking output over multiple generations and decades and Nintendo and Sony first parties have absolutely killed it for multiple decades constantly putting out stuff I want to play even if the output hasn't been quite as high.

It's hard to call them the GOAT. Capcom is generally excellent but also weirdly inconsistent. They've clearly produced a ton of games that fit into the best of all time category and have a hell of a legacy, but they still put out a number of flops and mismanaged some of their franchises. Off the top of my head:

- Dead Rising 1 was excellent, 2 was ok, and everything after has been bleh.
- Devil May Cry 2 and Donte...
- Resident Evil 6 was a mess and the RE 3 Remake was under whelming.
- Exoprimal

There's probably dozens of other examples from the weird 2007-2013 period where Capcom was trying and failing to be a western developer (Dark Void, Bionic Commando, etc) and a lot of people had given up on them as a dev / publisher.

No one shall be brought before our LORD David Bowie without the true and secret knowledge of the Photoshop. For in that time, so shall He appear.
I’ll declare them the GOAT as soon as they make Viewtiful Joe 3. Or at least rerelease the first two.

Yeah, they are definitely above Capcom. Personally I would also rank Koei Tecmo above, and would probably tie with Square-Enix. Because despite all the shit they release, they also have some gems and sometimes excellent efforts towards their old games. Much more than making bundles of roms, which is quite common with Capcom with little value added.

RE4 remake was a massive disappointment to me. Sorry, GAF.
I just couldn't get into it either. Controls and aiming are absolutely terrible. How do you fuck up this much after releasing R3R is beyond me.

Yeah they are great. They had their ups and downs but overall the history of videogames wouldn't be the same without them, so many iconic franchises and characters.

They need to get a grip on the shitty PC ports. DD2 was fucking dogshit.
It's not a bad port since the game also runs like shit on consoles. More like the game was coded by hacks, specially whoever was in charge of the NPCs.

Capcom hasn't actually made a pc port since 2005, they've been building PC first and then porting down to consoles for parity for nearly 20 years in-house, only outsourced projects had pc ports; as undesirable as dragon's dogma's pc performance might be, it's a fuckton worse on consoles.

They’re pretty good.

Also rarely miss a release date, at least, that’s my perception. I feel like they announce a title 1,5 years before release and they always hit it.

Edit: there are exceptions, I just recall they announced that game with the space dude and the psychic powered girl, don’t know the name anymore…

Come to think of it... outside of Resident Evil Remakes and their amazing game collections I have had no interest in their recent output. Those remakes are fantastic, but everything else is meh.

Street Fighter has been in the shitter since Capcom decided to approach it as a service. There is something really underwhelming about their visual design and pace/flow of combat. The production values and coolness factor of Tekken 8 somehow has me playing with relative frequency even if I am not a fan of its service approach either. I am even playing characters that I have barely touched before like Lars, Yoshimitsu, and Kuma.

Nintendo easily beats them but Capcom are still fantastic. They have produced 2 of some of my fav games of all time in Resident Evil 4 and Mega Man 3.

People say Metacritic numbers shouldn't matter and yet Capcom is precisely putting out these critically acclaimed games because they target meta scores directly and its been very obvious for years they're hyper focused on it.

- Viewtiful Joe, DMC 3 & 4,BoF4 also inspired my artstyle
