RE4 Marketing Push
Capcom prepares massive campaign to promote the latest in the series.
By Juan Castro

December 17, 2004 - Capcom has just announced a national marketing campaign to publicize the coming of Resident Evil 4. The effort will flood the airwaves, print and even the world famous New York Times Square with a series of advertisements. Those in Time Square will air on the NASDAQ building's jumbo monitor. The 30-second promotional spots will feature in-game footage and run approximately 50 times a day between December 22 and January 2.

Capcom hopes to reach 20 million consumers during the scheduled run of the ads during Christmas and New Year's. Furthermore, Capcom has planned a far-reaching television campaign; one which the company states will garner some 170-million consumer impressions. These spots will range from 15 to 30 seconds each and focus on gamers aging from 18 to 34 years of age. The ads will air on U.S. and Canadian networks such as SpikeTV, Comedy Central, ESPN and MTV, among others.

"A revolutionary title of this caliber deserves an equally significant marketing campaign," said Todd Thorson, director of marketing, Capcom USA. "With Capcom's debut in Times Square and the myriad other plans we have lined up, Resident Evil 4 will receive the most dynamic marketing campaign we have ever created."

The extensive marketing campaign will also encompass the official Resident Evil 4 website, located over right over here. Along with downloadable screens, video and information on the game, visitors will find a set of online tools to make their very own fan sites. Best of all, Capcom is running a contest where those responsible for the best site can win limited edition U2 Apple Ipods.

Stay tuned for the latest.

If they were serious, they'd have started it already.

*perhaps they did. I don't watch tv or buy vg magazines.

I really hope this is successful for both Capcom and Nintendo. If they are succssful I can see GC taking back some of the ground it lost to microsoft this past year.

If the Xbox had no releases as big as RE4 coming up in 2005, I'd agree with you. As it is looking now, they have at least 2 though.

I'm out of the loop here..what are the two big ones?

Forza? no.... Conker?? no... what am I missing?

I hope it's a competent big maketing push. They can spend lots of money on bad marketing ideas of course ;-) BTW, will Capcom have some sort of theatrical advertisement for RE4? I'm not sure if that's the best marketing move, but at least it has a chance to make more people aware of the game. :-p

But do those dates only refer to the airing of the footage on NASDAQ's jumbotron? Or will they actually air TV commericals starting on Dec. 22nd? I'd hope for the later, but maybe they'll air the TV commercials after the game is released (like some other "brilliant" publishers) :-p I'm just being pessimistic ;-)

Too little, way too late.

If Capcom can sell 400,000 in the US they should be estatic.

Nothing sells on the GameCube aside from Nintendo mascot games and even those are taking a hit these days.

Maybe Capcom should follow EA's example and put a "Mario All-Stars" label on the RE4 box ;-)

I don't think the ad campaign for this will be any bigger than the Metroid Prime 2 one (I've seen that commercial a couple of times too).

I don't know, GTA: SA, Doom 3, Jade Empire all should sell competitively with RE4.

The campaign has already started. The Gamecube demo units have large cardboard cutouts on them now with RE4 and Metroid Prime 2 on them. There is also a beautiful RE4 standee at EB stores. Go take a look. It's HAWT!

They're simply pushing it now when it makes sense. The date is set in stone. January 11. Promoting hard close to release and through the shelf time makes more sense than hyping too far in advance, especially with the Cube, IMO. They're already doing a good job with the in store promotions I've seen. All those Christmas shoppers are going to see that standee. It made me stop and take notice today.

XBox should get a larger sales boost in 2005 just due to a $99 price point (as will PS2) which will probably happen sometime between March and May to clear stock.

XBox doesn't really need a huge hit game anymore, just a steady stream. They've already established themselves with the 18-35 year old demographic, those players know what to expect from XBox as a brand. Halo 2 will continue to be their flashship title well into next year.

Nintendo has no rep there with older players, so even if Resident Evil 4 is a *big* game, it's not going to sell to its potential anyway.

A good way to push would to have not let on about the ps2 version yet....

Dumbasses

Yeah, that's why GTA:SA sells so poorly on PS2, everyone waits for the Xbox/PC version.

Both games were announced exclusive. Both games were announced Xbox ports, the only difference was that GTA:SA had a chance in the marketplace prior to the Xbox version announcement.

GTA:SA was announced to be a timed exclusive from the start ("premiering on PS2") You'd have to be a real dumbass (or just not give a shit) to think that the game won't get ported. I'd wager most peoeple just don't give a shit, and want to play their favorite game as soon as they can.

It could sell really well. The occassional big GC non-Nintendo game does. The Sonic titles, Rogue Leader, Super Monkey Ball, plenty of the EA titles (though, with a few exceptions, still less than on the Xbox or PS2).

So it's got a shot. Oh and while it's not really to the topic, but Animal Crossing is a Nintendo non-mascot game that sold well.

Well, the GTA series has historically received ports for multiple systems without interrupt, while the same rang true for the Resident Evil series in the past, it was proclaimed GC exclusive just prior to the release of REmake. Apples and oranges.

You've got to admit, Capcom has put a lot of faith into the Gamecube. The reasons: Shinji Mikami isn't a big fan of the PS2, and the X-Box has a very underwhelming audience in Japan. A bare few mature titles hav sold on the gamecube (besides Wrestling), so let's hope RE4 gets what it deserves :)

An anonymous, auto-generated analyst chimes in with his/her two cents on Resident Evil 4 on Gamecube.

An essay on Resident Evil 4 on Gamecube

The issues involving Resident Evil 4 on Gamecube has been a popular topic amongst scholars for many years. I really, really like Resident Evil 4 on Gamecube. Though Resident Evil 4 on Gamecube is a favourite topic of discussion amongst monarchs, presidents and dictators, there are just not enough blues songs written about Resident Evil 4 on Gamecube. It still has the power to shock the easily lead, who are likely to form a major stronghold in the inevitable battle for hearts and minds. Keeping all of this in mind, in this essay I will examine the major issues.

Social Factors

While some scholars have claimed that there is no such thing as society, this is rubbish. When The Tygers of Pan Tang sang 'It's lonely at the top. Everybody's trying to do you in' [1] , they created a monster which society has been attempting to tame ever since. Difference among people, race, culture and society is essential on the survival of our world, however Resident Evil 4 on Gamecube provides standards by which we may judge our selves.

Recent thought on Resident Evil 4 on Gamecube has been a real eye-opener for society from young to old. It is intrinsically linked to adolescent inner acclimatisation.

Economic Factors

Increasingly economic growth and innovation are being attributed to Resident Evil 4 on Gamecube. We will begin by looking at the Maiden-Tuesday-Lending model, as is standard in this case.

There are a number of reasons which may be attributed to this unquestionable correlation. Obviously the market value of gold plays in increasingly important role in the market economy. Many analysts fear a subsequent depression.

Political Factors

No man is an island, but what of politics? Placing theory on the scales of justice and weighing it against practice can produce similar results to contrasting playing with a puppy and singing with a blackbird.

Take a moment to consider the words of jazz singer Demetrius Tuigamala 'A man must have his cake and eat it in order to justify his actions.' [2] Amazingly, he new nothing of Resident Evil 4 on Gamecube until he was well into his thirties. I feel strongly that if politicians spent less time thinking about Resident Evil 4 on Gamecube and put more effort into their family life, that we would have a very different country.

I wait anxiously. What will the next few years bring for Resident Evil 4 on Gamecube?

Conclusion

We can conclude that the Resident Evil 4 on Gamecube is both a need and a want. It replenishes the self, ensures financial stability and is a joy to behold.

I'll leave you with this quote from Courteney Cruise: 'Oooh yeah Resident Evil 4 on Gamecube shoo badaby dooo.' [3]
