Report: Marathon Delay Likely as Sony Cancels All Paid Marketing Plans

Marathon threads seem to attract a lot of attention, so you could be right.

Because watching the destruction of a studio is more eye catching, just like the image below.

The problem isn't GAAS….

The problem that these big companies are having is the same issue with the comic book industry… It's women coming into a male dominated space and feminist men….

Ask yourself why we are getting a Ghost of Yotei and not Tsushima 2? At least with Ghost you can copy and paste most gameplay mechanics don't won't be bad.

Sony has been cancelling single player games too…

Have some of you not noticed Sony likes making games for blind people and people with no arms….

They wouldn't let DayZ bring their game to PlayStation without highlighting names on proximity chat so that players could get reported…

You're not getting PVP games made for men by Sony… They are refusing to give us Socom….

All their main characters are women outside of Kratos…
Absolutely correct

Also part of the reason Playstation has been failing with these games. And chasing GAAS titles

Sony is in the perfect position to profit from GaaS hits without taking any of the risk! Just enjoy that sweet 30% from letting Fortnite etc. use your PS Store. Greed and fomo is a mofo I guess. That Activision purchase really spooked them. I don't think they buy Bungie without it.

Correct. If you go back to the 70s when they allowed women to work fulltime, it immediately crushed labor power. Sure we coasted on inertia for another 10 years before we really felt it but imagine doubling the labor supply overnight. It was a feeding frenzy for manufacturers. They got so fat and greedy from it, when the profit injection from that ran its course, they went straight to lobbying for mass immigration and "free trade" to get another hit. In one fell swoop it destroyed the middle class and the family(which corps also profit from).

Is this game was a horse, you'd shoot it.

Have the courage they should've had to cancel Concord and take the egg on the face, vs being so out of touch with your audience that you honestly don't realize how bad your product is.

wtf happened to PS first-party. They were so fucking good 2009-2020. RIP.

Marathon threads seem to attract a lot of attention, so you could be right.

Morbidly train wrecks attract a lot of attention and this is happening in real time

Everyone knew it was coming off the tracks except those making the game and those who greenlit it

Oh and those content creators who have been providing input the last few years could have been telling them it's in trouble instead of being on their knees sucking dick all this time

But what is really worrying me, is that it took actual player feedback to realize that it's not ready yet. There seems to be no one within Sony who can tell if a game is actually good or not.
Smells like toxic positivity. Just like with Concord, you can tell that the public play test was the first time the game was exposed to honest unfiltered criticism.

And if you believe the rumors about Concord, that was supposedly Hermen's baby that nobody was allowed to criticize. I wonder if this $3.2 billion studio is another one of Hermen's babies.

Hermen Hulst should be the last person to trust for GAAS success. Going all the way back to KZ days, he had a franchise that got solid reviews and exclusive to PS and still couldnt parlay that into MP success like Halo and Gears on Xbox. Gamers on PS said forget it and just went to COD or BF. I remember those articles when KZ SF came out on PS4 and sold millions right away. But then the MP player count people pasted on screen was 1000 people after a couple months.

You'll notice that the games that are attached to his name like KZ and Horizon get solid SP focus. But KZ MP fizzled out. And if Concord, Bungie and any other GAAS failure are attached to his name, that's more MP/GAAS bombs. I didnt know this until checking Guerrila's wiki but they even helped make Death Stranding games. Again, they seem to have a good nose for SP focused games.

He loved Concord. He even tweeted about it years ago trying to hype it up like he's the only exec whose seen it WIP.

He's got to stick to picking SP games. Let someone else choose GAAS.

Here's the thing no one seems to understand: the game is good.

According to whom? Certainly not according to the people who actually played the closed alpha. Even the people within their own friendly echo chambers (e.g. Reddit) were crapping all over the game during the closed alpha.

You sure? 3 Concords (the original, FAILgames and Marathon) coming from the same company doesn't sound like learning at all 🤣
We saw a whole marketing campaign for Concord, right? We are not seeing one for marathom YET. So, yeah, Im sure someone is learning (WAAAY slower than it shoude have, I might add - it is some sort of planetary alignment the fact that Concord was turned off at the same week Astro Bot lauched!).

Gaming IMO is just one of those industries that if you want cool, gritty or realistic games you got to trend to guys. Were wired different, plays games more, and play different genres of games more since the beginning of gaming.

What also changed gaming was Floyd and BLM. Not just gaming. But media as a whole for sure since it's a very showboaty kind of industry always looking for attention and brownie pts while a company making patio stones doesn't give a shit about stuff like that.

So when you combine more women making games, more weird DEI-ish people, and any company jumping on the DEI train as a product strategy, it's a recipe for potential disaster. And it blew up starting in probably late 2023 and onward. If this was 2020 and 2021 when everyone was trying to pander for sales and political motives, it was fine as that was the trend.

Well, just like anything like clothes, fashion colour of the year, rainbow loom, Wordle etc.... fads and trends always fade away.

And since big budget games might take 5 years to make and $100M to fund, they better hope the fad is still hot when the game releases.

Not surprisingly, you'll see tons of movies, TV, games with lots of DEI or female boss lead characters all failing lately. Way back when all these scriptwriters and game makers in their brainstorming sessions were high fiving each other trying to heavily jump on this stuff in 2020 and 2021, they probably thought by the time it releases it'd be a smash hit combined with everyone giving them a 5-star rating on the morals and ethics scale. Nope. Fad is over folks.

But then predictable games like COD, FIFA and PUBG keep chugging like nothing happened.

What pisses me off about all this GaaS failures is that many here called it as soon as it was announced, it is such a shame... all they had to do is keep their PS4 single player strategy adding more smaller AA games in between. How many SP games could they have funded with the money they've burned on the GaaS adventure...

Adding PVE would take more time unless you're talking about keeping the same garbage gameplay loop with no PVP…. (I like Tarkov)

Truth is the game isn't good and the gameplay mechanics don't fit an extraction shooter.

The game is just bad and won't attract anyone….
I agree, I was just *trying* to be optimistic 😂

Gaming IMO is just one of those industries that if you want cool, gritty or realistic games you got to trend to guys. Were wired different, plays games more, and play different genres of games more since the beginning of gaming.

There was that study years ago before covid that polled men/women and what genres they play. Women played way more Sims-like games and puzzle games. I think every other genre was more guys playing it and some were absurdly skewed like sports, shooters and racers where only 5% of women said they play them.

So when you got some very popular genres with hardly any women playing it, a company amping up on hiring women to make them doesn't correlate. That's probably why over the years, games trend to more safe and bubbly or Karen preachy. Because that's what women like more than guys, and what you get more in Candy Crush.

Some industries are best done by guys and some by women. It's like sports, I dont care who it is, there is no female play by play commentator I've heard (hockey and basketball) that sounds good calling a game. It's like amateur hour. There's probably way more experienced good sounding guys who they can hire. Nope. U=You can tell right off the bat if you've ever heard a female commentated game that they are inexperienced because they'll fuck up pronouncing the names of players during commentating way more than any male play by play host. But when I watch some home improvement and interior design shows, the women hosting the show and telling viewers what should be done to improve a house are awesome.

Fortnite and COD money to hard to ignore. Even though Xbox has been trending down, Sony started making extra sales on PC and their strengths are SP, even the biggest companies not used to gaas will jump on.

They could had also just partnered up or bought out any studio making SP games and help take it to the next level which could be a 10M+ seller. But the rolled the dice on gaas instead.

I played the shit out of the alpha and loved every second of it. Amazing experience.

How do they have 850 people? How are they have so many people and still manage to steal stuff from other people. Shareholders should force anyone out who was responsible for this garbage deal.
They already put Jim's face on a cookie and wished Connie Booth well in her next opportunity. What more can they do?

I'm starting to get worried about Sony
Starting? They are fucked mid term. Only blind fanboys can't see. Sold my ps5 on 2022. Never regreted and i'm never investing on their ecosystem again. I will play their 1 aaa sp per year on Steam.

They don't have enough studios to compete. This gaas strategy will fuck them.

Their audience love their sp games. They were really good on this and they fucked all up.

Concord was a crazy, near-perfect storm story but it could be edged out by this and the two would define sony this gen. I'm having a good time with the hardware and software. There are some hypothetical unknown games that could have been made if sony had taken the gaas investment and made sp games, but that's wishy-washy and I can't care too much. On the other hand, the story of concord and marathon imploding is visceral (plus entertaining) and if it happens twice it will be remembered.

The few folks on on this that actually played its seemed to either hate it or really like it.

I think I looked promising but needs a hell of a lot more time in the oven.

Most of the criticism seems to be based on heady thoughts about industry politics and extrapolating based on game genres, not actual play time.

I just find it so funny that Sony bought Bungie for their GAAS expertise and they manage to fumble one of the best and potential filled series that is Destiny. Just absolute cinema.

Can you imagine after bungie imploding that all these SIE studios doing gaas or shutting down had to take advice from them for years how to make good gaas. Lol

Ya. Huge play time.

The final day of the alpha had like 300 steam CCU. Tons of gamer time there.

Everyone ignored it and bailed fast. After day one steam CCU of around 7,000, it right away dropped to a couple thousand and then less and less. Some late nights had less than 100 people playing.

Concord beta on steam actually had better numbers some days.

There are also people who loved games like Redfall and Concord. The general consensus is the game is not good and needs more time in the oven.
The only positives I've heard about this game is some people liking the art, and supposedly the gun play and net code are fine.

Everything else is junk and that doesn't even include the whole plagiarism issue on top of it.

There's zero people who I've seen in articles or streamers saying the game is in a good state to release on time.

I actually initially predicted it would release on time before the stolen theft thing but that was due needing to make money, beat cod and Xmas rush and avoid butting heads with fairgames next year. But in isolation, the game itself needs a lot of work and fixing the stolen art is more work needed nobody saw coming.

That's not relevant. Tons of us don't want to play these types of games. We create an artificial chorus against gaas bullshit even when it's good, and all we need is one slip to control the narrative. The stolen art was that slip. We don't even really like arc raiders. That's all for show. That little game will HUGELY benefit from all this. The entire gaming hater Internet is about to make that game famous just to spite marathon. Think about that.

Before you get mad at me, I'm not a part of this. I agree with their sentiment, I disagree with their methods.

All this noise and all they're just going to do is rebrand it..

Something like Maracord or Conthon seems likely.

They could also buy the name rights from Jeff Grubb for Giant Bomb I guess.

Delay and do what with it???? Sure delay it and polish the shit out of it by the time they release it Arc Raiders would have dominated the market and then what?
