I guess I'm looking for a cell-phone equivalent to ipodlounge. In discussing new cell phone models with a friend today, I just realised how completely out of the loop I am. I basically need a ground up guide to cell phones, covering things like operating systems etc. He was talking about symbian etc. but I've no idea which models of phone have that OS, if you can put your own java programs on to that OS (i know you can with some cell phones, but I don't know which etc.). So I just need a really good guide to the software and hardware cell phone landscape. Any suggestions?

If you're getting a new contract you should definately wait for the vx 8000.
Otherwise the Motorola v710 and vx 7000 are solid options.

...anyone have any reccomendations for AT&T OR Cingular phones? I've been looking around for weeks and I can't make any decisions yet. I just need bluetooth, mp3 ringtone capabilities and possibly a camera.

Cheers for the links!

I've been doing a bit of research, but am left puzzled about the feasibility of using wifi on a smartphone. Do any phones support this? I.e. can I can i browse the web on a phone using wifi? It'd be a hell of a lot cheaper for me than using the mobile network to browse the web..

Thanks.

Your choices in that regard get rather limited to less than a handful of phones. Its a cool feature, but drains the battery like crazy. More interestingly are the VOIP possibilities from having phones that support WiFi ;) It is nice, however, to be able to hit a WiFi Hotspot and be able to download the web/content quickly. Once EDGE/EV-DO really come on the scene, you will most likely just end up getting some unlimited data plan and browsing wherever you are as opposed to hunting for a Hotspot.

Thanks. What is EDGE? One of the new Nokias supports it, but unfortunately it's not a Symbian..

EDGE is the successor to GPRS - the "3G" technology of the GSM networks. From what little I've been exposed to it, its pretty fast but is woefully underdeployed here in the United States.

Thanks much..don't think it's available where I am either :/

Kinda surprised wifi isn't be integrated into phones more generally, though. I'm looking at what the NintendoDS has for $150, and then looking at what some of these $600+ phones have, and you kinda wonder. I'm guessing there might be some pressure from carriers on the manufacturers not to include wifi, since it would probably cut into the popularity of their web browsing services.

WiFi on cell phones would be a disaster to the providers :)

Go for the Nokia 6230, it's arguably the best non-smartphone 'candy bar' (meaning all cute features like video camera, digital camera, radio, MP3 player, MMC cards etc.) phone you can get really.

I just got one recently myself, and it's just the most user friendly intuitive thing.
