Have you jumped on the foldable phone bandwagon yet?

I got a Samsung z flip 6 and I am enjoying it quite a bit. It's slimmer but longer than my last phone which was an s23+ and like that it can fold to a square, very pocket able. The crease is not noticeable when the phone is on your face, only noticed the crease from afar.

How is it to use the smaller screen with apps? I'd actually like to have a phone in the size of the smaller scren as it'd be crazy pocketable and probably stop me from mindlessly surfing on my phone.

It works pretty well, keep in mind that on stock the available apps are limited, there are ways around that that allow you to put whatever app on the small folded screen.

foldables would only be viable for me if they manage to make one with 2 solid screens with gorilla glass, that have basically no bezel at the hinge part, and just snap into one big screen when you open it. so it looks like 1 big screen but is 2 smaller screens that near seamlessly click together.
even if there's a tiny seam between them that would still be better than the super fragile plastic film screens current foldables have, and better than the little fold bulge that debelops over time when using them.

but that's how MicroLED TVs currently work don't they? just multiple modules with no bezel that click together... surely you can do that on a smaller scale with 2 OLED screens.

Have been using a Motorola Razr 40 for a few months, seems to be fine from a reliability perspective and has a nice tall screen that reminds me of the Xperia 1 IV which I prefer. That said, the outer screen is too small to be useful and its touch is very fiddly to use, I also wish it came with a headphone jack and expandable storage.

Yeah when they come out with a foldable it's going to cannibalize their iPad sales

It won’t at all, we’re talking what will be a flagship device at $2,500 dollars.

An iPad costs $500, iPads are mainly 90% used by older people for larger screens and fonts and children, kids, teens at this point. Totally seperate markets.

They have some of the best engineers in the world, they could do a foldable phone now but they won’t until there’s is 0 noticeable crease, the screen must be identical to that of a regular phone. That’s how they operate and always have, and when they (if) they release one it will be the first in the world with zero compromise on the screen.

I live in Australia foldable Chinese phones are available everywhere here, but the uptake isn’t there. Be handy for flights but typically take my laptop regardless.

Apple doesn't make their own screens If someone manages to make a crease less screen the Chinese will more than likely have it in their phones first.

Do you enjoy talking your ass? skip to the 3:23 mark to watch the drop test

these screens are literally made out of thin plastic.
a single rogue kernel of sand will instantly scratch it. you can scratch them with your finger nail...

dropping it on a flat surface isn't exactly a good stress test for a phone that has specific protection for that around the bezels.
dropping it on a sharp corner, now that would be a test. not every surface below you will be flat.

Dude you are flat out wrong why are you doubling down? Did you even watch the video? You drop your phone on the sidewalk several times and then kick it across the sidewalk and see how it fares.

Had a few of these, currently have the fold pro.
Love the phone for games on a plane (emu stuff) but I agree with the posts here that talk about fragility.
I find myself NOT opening the phone in public, when I am at lunch or meetings or whatever. At this point there just isn't a hinge "i trust" to be sealed enough to protect against particles, greebles, etc.

Yes, very fragile (compared to a slab) def not a phone you want to go partying with…I use my iPhone for that (I don’t go to parties).

A smartwatch is very useful if you want a bully on your wrist that makes you feel like a piece of crap for not walking more.

That, and if you actually want to know who's calling/answer a call without taking your phone out of your pocket/bag.
Or, if you wanna navigate around town without having your phone out (Gmaps), or, for checking app notifications.Or, for making payments without - again - having to take your phone out.
Basically i use my smartwatch for everything but exercising 😁😁.

Got a Samsung Galaxy watch Ultra and while it's absolutely not worth the idiotic 700+ Eurodollars that Sammy asks for (got it for 399) I'm pleased with it, sure, the battery could be better (3-4 days max depending on the usage) but, it's a good QoL gadget man 😉

Now, the Rayban metas I've also ordered...I'll have to see if they're worth it (got them for listening to music/answering calls for half the price they go for).

Regarding foldables now...I'd be actually interested if it wasn't for the fact that they're even more expensive AND that you still have black bars on videos/streaming due to aspect ratio something which, for me at least, defeats the whole purpose of having a bigger screen real estate...

Cheers

The problem is Apple has iPad sales to protect, not so other manufacturers because lol who buys Android tablets.

I hate that you might be right. The absolute terror Apple seems to have about allowing anything like MacOS on iPad Pros, due to its competition with Macbooks, speaks of a company that has foregone Job's advice about daring to cannibalize one's own product lines.

Then again...

When Steve Jobs passed away on October 5, 2011, Apple’s market capitalization was approximately $350 billion. At the time, the company recorded annual revenue of $108 billion for fiscal year 2011.
As of January 2025, Apple’s market capitalization has grown to $3.35 trillion, nearly a tenfold increase since Jobs’ death. For fiscal year 2024, Apple reported annual revenue of $391 billion, more than tripling its revenue since 2011.

Yeah, that's true. But sadly it doesn't necessarily correlate with Apple products being of better quality today or more exciting. Just that they've gone mainstream and that they are making more money on them. Though stuff like the M-chips is cool. It's a much more cautious company today, but Steve Jobs was one of a kind so it makes sense.

Apple has been rumoured to be developing their own screens for sometime now and wanting to bring it in all house in 2024, delays happen but they have the best chips in the game and the most vital component will be interesting to see if they can turn to developing their own displays now.

I know insular apple cultists don't but they dont account for the entirety of the "real world". Foldables were down 1% yoy for Q3 I can't find info for the entire year.
Android users don't care either, foldables are <2% of the entire market and despite aggressive pushes by Samsung and Huawei uptake and market share haven't budged

Nope. I have an iPhone 14 Pro and hope I don’t have to change it for years. My wife said we should the new 16s and I was totally “nope”. Zero desire for it. I can’t wait for the day I never need a phone again

Your 14 pro has a 120 hz refresh rate vs 60hz on the 16 you will notice the difference and your 14 has 3 rear cameras vs 2 on the 16 if your going to upgrade go with the pro model

I would like to know what benefits the foldability provides from someone who has used one, if any.
Have owned mine for the past 5 months and there are absolutely none. It's more for the novelty of it, I'm just grateful the software doesn't differ from a regular phone. Switching to a regular s25 that's releasing soon.
