I pretty much just play videogames. I like to play them. Sometimes I play games on different consoles. Is this bad? I get the feeling I may have been approaching this "gaming" thing all wrong from the start.

Odd, most people wait until consoles have launched to jump ship. Just saying, is all.
History has shown us the following.
If you own a Microsoft console, you will have plenty of games but have to endure the sales bragging of Sony fanboys.
If you own a Nintendo console, you will have to endure massive game droughts, sales bragging, but will be treated to new classics from your favorite company.
If you own a Sony console, you're a dime a dozen. Get over yourself.

Youre a moron for having an "allegiance" to a console or company in the first fucking place. Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony dont give two shits about your loyalty. They all want the same thing, your cash. Yes, ZOMG, Nintendo isnt really about innovation, they are in it for the paper! Scandalous!
Buy fewer games, but buy a second (or third) console. Problem solved.

b, shooting yourself in the foot because you're denying yourself great games
If you can only afford one console then fair enough. Buy the one with the best games for you...but don't go acting like a dick towards people who bought the other consoles. You can buy an Xbox or a PS2 now for the price of two games here in Britain. A 2nd hand GC costs about £35 (less than the price of a game!)...at the end of a console generation there's no excuse to stick to just one, IMO

I was once a Nintendoist, but now I'd say I pretty much am agnostic. I still have varying degrees of respect for the companies that make the consoles, but I wouldn't take sides. They're just machines.
It makes me laugh how people treat it as some kind of war. If you pick the 'other' side then you're a traitor, or you hate gaming or something. Oh and people who buy more than one console aren't real gamers apparently :lol Someone (I remember who but I won't name and shame them) on here said that a while ago and it was the most childish thing I've ever seen :lol
The only fair way to do it would be to vote on the first picks for all three, and then from there that person goes and makes the next picks and so and so forth. Just quick looking at market share with handhelds and consoles I think Sony would be last pick, then Nintendo and then MS would get first round picks.

Console fanboyism is silly, something I've known from the Genesis vs SNES days - I got a Genesis for Phantasy Star 2 and 3 and Sonic... but was also envious of my friend's SNES and Final Fantasy 2... most fanboyism comes from envy... having money
But I think if you want, you can prefer one company's philosophy to the others... I'm actually starting to enjoy Nintendo's philosophy, ever since the DS turned out to be a breakaway hit and devs actually learned how to make compelling games for it.
