So from that statement alone you can judge my movie tastes?
Here's some of my favorite movies of the year:
Garden State, Eternal Sunshine, The Incredibles, I Heart Huckabees
and I'm extremely looking forward to The Life Aquatic and Lemony Snicket A Series of Unfortunate Events.

Just like everyone else on GAF! And every other nerd/hipster, of course! <3

Johnny Depp always reminds me of an american version of Peter Cook for some reason and this movie confirms it.

Looks like a lot of fun. Depp looks so creepy though. Take off the lipstick and the ultrawight, 'THE SWAN'-like teeth.

Do all the new Junior Members have shitty tastes in movies or what?

Yes.

We love "Phat Beach", "You Got Served" and our holy grail "Kazaam".

The only way to destroy us are with Stanley Kubrick films.

Clockwork Orange is like poison to my eyes.

Looks like crap. I liked it a lot more when I only saw the poster. This trailer ruined it for me. Looks really cheesy. Beh.

That throwing stick stunt of yours has boomeranged on us.

You sure it wasn't just the jingle that did it for you though?

Marilyn Manson is not in it. Where are you people getting this from?

Manson was rumored to be Wonka years ago, but Depp is Wonka now and forever!

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised to see him in a cameo...just because the original movie was such an influence on some of his early stuff.

Then again, I'm not sure whether he knows anyone involved in the film that could possibly set it up...

Hmm, I must be weirding out. Watched it once, I liked it. Watched it again in closer detail.. this looks like a Suess film. :( I have a feeling I'm going to hate this movie simply because I cherish the first one too much. It's hard to think of this as something completely different. BUT! I saw Edward Scissorhands again the other night, along with Pirates, AND Big Fish. "Hope is rekindled...". We'll see.

Haha, you might want to re-watch the original. I totally missed it as a kid, but now when I watch the movie, Wilder freaks me the fuck out.

Wilder's Wonka does it for all the right reasons though. He's intelligent and sadistic. Witty and elusive. He has this master plan for how to conduct things and makes everyone conform to it.
Wilder's Wonka is brilliant and I was hoping Burton wouldn't stray far.

Okay, if you put Johnny Depp in a movie, let alone a Burton movie, and have him wave his arms around while holding scissors, well you're definitely going to rip me out and make me think a certain other role he played.

People like the gag with him walking into the camera? Jesus, that's undoubtedly the worst bit. How hackneyed.

why is that every comedy has to have a character walking into something and hitting thier face? EVEry comedy..

well aside from that overdone horrid joke i think the movie might be interesting. we'll see =). it could also be very terrible

People are basing their opinions of this film on the half dozen or so words Depp says in the trailer.

well that and the overall tone of the trailer. mind you this could be opposite what the movie is like. but so far i get the impression of "Willy wonka walks into the camera and takes a prat fall"

To be fair, studios want audiences to take something from the trailers they release... usually an impression of the end result...

This is what we have to work with. If someone states conclusively that the movie will be great or will suck, then yeah, that's stupid, but otherwise there's nothing wrong with judging what Warner Bros wants us to see.

Well, it's a teaser. I wouldn't get super concerned until we have a full-length trailer. I doubt filming is even done on the movie yet.

Looks good so far, but Depp like that makes me think of the main character from clockwork orange.

....not sure if thats a bad thing :D

I'm gonna judge the final cut compared to the book...

..not the Wilder movie. Which are two different beasts anyway.

If you haven't read the book I suggest you do, its craaaazy. It's right up Burton's alley.

That was just strange. Even more excited about this movie now.

Still having a hard time with depp as wonka, sure he'll do a good job and all, but I cant think wonka without thinking of wilder.

I think this looks absolutely fantastic. I wasn't sure what I thought about it, but after seeing the trailer, I'm really enthused. I'm a big fan of the book, and I think the Wilder movie is fine, but I don't hold it up as the sacred cow version of the story... as many people seem to be doing.

Depp does look fairly creepy, I've got to say... but I've got to add that it looks like they've done an excellent job of casting the kids. Of course, whether they can act is a question all in itself :)

IF I disregard the music, the movie looks great. Music does so much to shape impressions.

Oh, and that was actually pretty f'ing funny when he walked into the camera. So weird.

Do you trust Burton's views on how Wonka should act, though?

not sure about that but from people worried about Depp's performance, I can't think of a bad one so that's no worry. But as said, Gene Wilder will be hard to top. He gave a sense of reality from the start and seamlessly brought the whole damn movie into insanity by the end. This movie seems insane from start to finish judging by the trailer.

The kids and parents look great. I love the girl they got for Veruca Salt.

Depp...is...not quite there. The thing that bugs me most, is his "Eeew". It's almost...dare I say...Valley Girl.

On another note, why are some of the Wonka bars in the teaser...Korean? Or at least, I think that's Korean writing on half of the chocolate bars.

And does anyone remember if that chewing gum line was in the book? That doesn't make a whole lot of sense, since he makes chewing gum in the factory...

Wonka does express his distaste for chewing gum in the book, though maybe not in those exact words. Mike TeeVee makes a point of asking him why he makes chewing gum if he thinks it is disgusting.

He may not be walking into the camera in that shot near the end- perhaps it is the wall of the Great Glass Elevator.

Ooooh, that's right.

Shit, I should know that. I played Wonka in a Youth Theatre Northwest production a while back.

Did anyone else notice how small the Oompa Loompa's are? If you squint, you can see 30 of them rowing the boat.

Aside the goofy Oompa Loompa 60's rock music videos (WTF?), I liked it.

Yes, and when if you question was about Depp, then thats a confidant, resounding YES! Any man who can take a pretty crappy roll in a shitty movie, and make both the character and movie gold is somebody I can trust with rolls like this.

For God's sake man, its not a remake, its a more truthful telling of the book, hopefully one where the aurthor won't roll in his grave. He did not like the original movie.

Actually, I just watched the teaser again and noticed Wonka in front of the control panel of the Great Glass Elevator at 0:44-0:45. One of the buttons is marked "Nice Place." :lol

You'll have to forgive me, but after seeing how "well" Burton "got" Batman, I'm a little unsure.

The thing is... Wilder's take on Wonka was so brilliant that any attempt to emulate that would fall short. I'm looking forward to seeing more of Depp's version; that creepy smile looks promising.
