My step-dad a rabbi needs a new laptop, nothing fancy, no games, no music, just work. Whats a good Laptop for 700 and under (preferably under) for work that he won't need to upgrade soon

I've been dealing with laptops for the past 5 years and have notice a trend:

The smaller / lightweight the laptop is, the easier they crap out. We've dealt with these tiny things and they just don't last.

Harddrives are the first thing to go out on these things also. But if you want a brand recommendation, I suggest either IBM's or Toshiba. The Compaq's I've dealt with were total shit boxes.

Yeah, Compaqs seem to make notoriously crappy laptops. Honestly, I typically just tell people to go with Dell. Nothing really sets their laptops apart performance-wise, but their support is GREAT. A part craps out, you just send it in and you've got the replacement in a matter of a day or two. I'd also always suggest buying a 3-year laptop with an investment like a laptop. IBM Thinkpads are like tanks, although their laptops tend to be abit more expensive.

Yeah Dell support is great, but I just hate getting escalated through 3 levels of tech support just to get a hardware fix done. But once you do manage to get through, they are really fast to send out the replacement part with complete packaging to have it shipped back.

I've had my Dell Inspiron 4000 for like three and a half years now. Certainly no longer a speed-demon, but it's still kicking and has held up exceptionally well. I had a three year warranty on it and made sure to call up Dell and go "um, I think my LCD's broken" to get a new/refurb one slapped on it before my warranty peetered out. One thing to note, if you have an older Dell laptop with some warranty life left and your HD experiences a, ahem, accident, you can sometimes get a larger HD from Dell as a replacement.

Thankfully the corporate accounts we go through typically don't put up much of a fight. Most of our calls typically consist of "part a broken, please send another" with Dell responding with "a'ight". Plus they've got good turn-around. Dell ain't perfect, and I still hate them for just turning a blind eye to AMD, but their support's pretty great.
