Chili's spends $750k/year on egg wash so burger buns will look better on Instagram

I only go to Chili's or Applebee's when someone gives me a gift card (which happens more than it should). Applebee's served me the worst burger I've ever had so Chili's wins. How the hell do you fuck up a burger?

lol, nobody posts fucking Chili's on Instagram.

Yeah, okay. Right.

I did notice that "fry holder" change a few months back/last time I went. Didn't really care for it, but I guess it's nice that the fries can be put aside while focusing on the burger on the plate without the fries getting in the way. *shrug*

The egg wash seems like a waste of money, to me. I seriously doubt people would care if they didn't do that and take photos anyway in decent lighting.

Oh no they want their food to actually look good. Those FIENDS.

People hark on MickyD's and BK for their terrible looking burgers, but making sure the food looks good on the plate is also wrong. Lmao.

Also, no matter what you think of the eggwash - steel baskets for the fries and cut 'n stacked ribs are legitimately great ideas.

my generation disgusts me. spending all their free time advertising for some faceless corporation instead of doing something meaningful with their lives. ok take a picture of your chemical-laden meal while children starve in foreign countries. tweet how much you love microwaved meat while console exclusives go undefended on internet forums. whatever. so stupid.

okay you got me

While there's nothing wrong with what they're doing, they sound hilariously out of touch.
"They are not going to do things if they don't believe it's shareable," Creed said in describing millennials.
I highly doubt anyone puts significant thought into whether something is "shareable" before they do it.

IIRC Chili's started the whole french onion/onion ring on every hamburger, right? I think that just sunk in as ''every burger here is greasy and sloppy''. That might be why I never remember eating there. It's like how Applebee's does the same exact thing. Everything has to be smothered or it's just extremely bland.

We also had a Red Robin open up around town and for awhile that replaced both restaurants. Now it's all about going to Five Guys.

I noticed when I was at Five Guys that they get their potatoes catered by a specific person every now and then. They write who that is on their board. I couldn't imagine places like Five Guys doing this. Half the time they just throw your food in a bag and that's it. I don't know why they'd care about food photos or looking great. I prefer Five Guys over a lot of places.

I tried Culver's last year and I didn't get why people loved butter burgers so much. A good burger place is typically your 1,000 calorie meal with more than you can eat on the menu. Everything else is bottom tier restaurants or places you go with a large group of people.

Half of these food photos look like small little portions that probably cost a fortune. I guess I got over elegant looking meals a long time ago. The large sized pieces of meat look more interesting to me.

their burgers are shit now.. I used to like them, but their buns are like plastic or something.. I dunno what they did but I don't like the old timer any more... :'(

This is what foods service should be paying attention to. Here is the real voice of a meth user on the tweak.

Shadow people should also be banned so normals can eat in peace.

Oh, so that's why my grandmother put egg wash on her bread and pies! For Instagram!

(Stupid title is fucking stupid.)

Did you not read the article? The CEO specifically mentions they are trying to make the food look good for social media pictures. How is the thread title inaccurate?

Chili's says it's spending about $750,000 a year for an egg wash that gives its burger buns a photogenic glaze. It's part of an effort by the chain to get you to take pictures of its food and post them online.

"It just makes it look great. It glistens, it shines," said Wyman Roberts, CEO of Brinker International, the parent company of Chili's.

In evaluating whether a dish will appeal to New School customers, Chili's now considers whether it's "shareable."

"That doesn't mean just big portions. That means stuff they could take a picture of, because they all like to share," Roberts said.

I really can't understand those who are outraged. As someone who really enjoys baking bread at home, I do the same thing with a lot of the stuff I bake. Bread, no matter how delicious, can look horribly dull and unappetizing if you don't give it a little love. Egg wash on challah or rubbing a stick of butter on plain loaf bread makes both of them look wonderful, and gets people excited about eating it.

So, I guess it can be seen as wasteful, but it really does help presentation overall.

Yeah, I don't get this. 1) there's no way that the ONLY reason for putting eggwash on buns is for Instagram. It is probably said as tongue-in-cheek or just to get the reaction. Also, having people take photos of your food is free advertising. So... Money well spent? 2) eggwash on baked bread is super common. We did it at the restaurant I cooked in many years ago. It isn't some revelation. GAF gonna outrage, though, I guess.

And I take lots of food photos because I live in other countries and my friends and family want to see what I'm up to and what interesting things I'm eating.

I merely adopted the hipsterness.True hipsters were born in it.

I've always enjoyed Chili's, honestly. Only a few questionable experiences there.

As a casual dining chain, I'd put it above Applebee's, Outback Steakhouse, and The 99 easily.

Try reading the words under the title.

While I agree with the point you're making, using a post of his from the FaceGAF thread while pointing at his stance on vanity photos is kind of funny. What was the guy supposed to do if not take a selfie for posting in there?

"Sorry guys, I would love to contribute but you see I've got this stance on vanity photography."

The GAF Selfie thread isn't mandatory. If you don't want to post your self it's not required. In fact, I kind of think that thread was made for people who need to post selfies and share how they look.

It's that for some people clearly, but there's also a communal, curiosity satisfying: "I wonder what other members look like, here's what I look like" -aspect.

Humans are selfish creatures by nature, they're also hypocritical all the time, even when they dont notice or mean to.

Some responses in this thread are absolutely hilarious. People need to grow up. They're like babies early in the thread. Regardless egg wash on buns is a great idea and I'm a big fan of restaurants putting effort into the display of their food.

Ive only taken a picture of food once, and that was a waffle, and it was fucking delicious.\

EDIT: Fucking look at this deliciousness.

Who takes pictures of food at Chilli's...

When I am taking pictures of food it's when I feel it is something truly unique (or expensive). Like eating a 125$ set lunch here in India or or International Fist Class Flight cuisine.

Does XiaNaphryz work for BIG FAST FOOD or something now?

Wouldn't know the first thing about any of this stuff if not for him/her making topics about it all the time. I see you XiaNaps.

..which is exactly why there're willing to drop three-quarter mil on shinier buns.

Better looking food has been demonstrated to taste better, so I think this is a decent move. It is naive to think presentation doesn't matter.

So basically you use it to brag and other people use it to post stuff they like. You're so above them.

You're just keen on not getting the point, aren't you?

The point is that there is a split between those who only take pics of something special and those who would take a pic of a McDonald's meal.

Interesting vs Not interesting

Adding value vs Seeking likes

Wow....this whole post is making me cringe.

No doubt. "Enjoy" your "good food", "BRO." It's always amusing to see what the plebians think tastes good! :D

Your shit's not any more interesting than a McDonald's meal, hoss, it's all just pictures of food. Expense doesn't make a thing intrinsically more interesting.

The reason you think it's more interesting is the same reason people always think their baby pictures/vacation pictures/stories are interesting...self absorption.

Don't see a problem, 750k is nothing and I think they do look much better.

Meal picture elitists.

Now I've seen it all.

Uh, that's what you thought was appetizing?

If you want to eat actual good food you should eat here. http://thecornerofficedenver.com/

Or you can continue eating what you consider "good food."

Edit: I just realized that's what you think are waffles. lol

Wow you sound like a pretentious dick and then the restaurant you link isn't even some foodie shit but like edgy hotel food offering Americanized ethnic food. I know Denver has way better looking places than that.

His waffle looks good to me even if his photo should've focused on the waffle and not the ball of ice cream. He said he doesn't take pics often.
