Choosing a gaming Mouse

My Sensei Raw finally came! The ambidextrous design will take some getting used to, but I really like the feel of having a laser again. Build quality is top notch, though the software is a little spartan and I'll miss things like sensitivity clutch.

This is probably the only thing holding me back vs the Death Adder. Pretty torn at the moment.

I'm coming from about a year of using a DeathAdder myself, and after just a few hours since that post, the design is growing on me and hardly feels weird at all any more. Its ergonomics are very closely modeled on Microsoft's mice, and the material feels really good on the fingers. I think it's a better product than the DeathAdder, with the tie breaker being that you don't really have to worry about build quality with SteelSeries mice, whereas Razer can be inconsistent.

I can never go back to a mouse.

I can never go back to a mouse.

I've considered a trackball. I've used them in the past and liked them well enough, but that specific model always seemed a bit clumsy to me. Perhaps it's better once you've mastered the simpler models?

To get back on track, I use a SideWinder X5 and love it. It's a real shame they discontinued the line.

Nice, you've convinced me. Thanks for the insight.

Picked up a Logitech G600 mouse today. I had a Razer Naga a couple years ago, unfortunately it died and I no longer support Razer products. I missed the amount of buttons tht the Nagga had though, and I really like Logitech products.

So far I'm impressed with the mouse. The only thing I have to get used to, is that there's really no Back/Forward buttons that you would traditionally find on a mouse. I can change up a couple of the G keys to easily remedy that though.

My G700s just came in today. I'm coming from an MX1000 (which was made in like 2004 or something), so I haven't used any other mice in almost nine years, but it just feels so much cheaper. It's much lighter, the right click takes practically no force to depress and all of the nonstandard buttons are just sort of, well, mushy. I'm not sure how much of my discomfort is due to using my old mouse for so long making adjusting to anything difficult and how much is from the actual quality of this hundred dollar mouse being so much less than I was expecting. Anyone else use one of these yet?

I have G700. The only thing I don't exactly like about it are the side buttons. They're a bit mushy as you say. Other than that it's an amazing mouse.

My MX518 has to be at least 5 years old at this point and it's still going strong. The same is true of my fUnc mouse pad, which I purchased in 2002/3. How time flies!

You have no idea what you're talking about.

Wel tbh I (briefly) had a kinzu a few years back and the build quality on that mouse wasn't anything to write home about, especially considering how expensive steelseries is compared to, say, logitech. But then again they might have improved.

G400

Avago ADNS-S3095 optical sensor with no prediction/acceleration. Earlier models did come with angle snapping but those have all been phased out by now.

Tracks best at 400-800 CPI. I would recommend not using the software to avoid minor jitter issues. The only other thing to point out is the cord isn't braided.

Perfect mouse given you're comfortable holding it.

Totally agree.

Using a dpc latency checker it doubles whatever my normal average is next to certain intel speed step setting nothing else kept in me in the 100us-250us range. Without I'm below 50us consistently.

If I could jack the polling rate down this would be one of my favorite mice.

Totally agree. I've had mine since 2006 and it's still amazing. I can't imagine owning another mouse.

Except... I really need a wireless mouse since I have my computer hooked up to my TV. Why isn't there an MX518 wireless version? :(

still got an mx518 also, great mouse but shame about the negative accel (above 800dpi) and angle snapping. g400s looks tempting but still waiting for the ninox aurora

so the only steel series mice I can find over here, is "steel series cod black ops 2" and "steel series diablo 3".
no sensei-raw rubberized etc. are available here

is it worth getting the diablo one or are we talking about different models?

I have the G700 and while I like it, I really wouldn't recommend it. I have had to get it replaced twice in two years and even this third one is giving me issues. The first one started registering single clicks as double clicks while the second one started behaving strangely, snapping into all kinds of random location on my desktop and registering multiple clicks for just one click. Now, this third one is constantly resetting my dpi settings.

It's annoying and I'm convinced the mouse just isn't well designed or manufactured. Prior to this, my MX510 lasted me for more than 7 years with no issues at all.

G500, its pretty good.

What I hate about a mouse is that with some models the coating peels off easily. And I also need a good wireless mouse for my tv connected pc :p

Mouse GAF please help me! :( My original Razer Mamba is starting to wear down, the laser has more and more hiccups after almost two years and I lost the proof of purchase so I can't exchange it which means it's time for a new mouse... and well I can't decide between getting the Roccat XTD or the Mamba 2012. I know Razer products can be quite wonky with the build quality so my common sense tells me I should go with the XTD though coming from a original Mamba I just love the design so much :/ The Mamba fits my hand so perfectly and I never felt uncomfortable with it. The wireless part of it is not a must either but a nice bonus too.

Looking at the XTD though the internet seems full of praise for its awesomeness so I really need a bit decision help here D: Oh and it wouldn't even bother me that much if the Mamba 2012 breaks down quickly as my store has a full two year warranty with no question asked and that doesn't make the decision any easier :P

Is that the original high-end Logitech mouse? I actually had two of those (returned the first because I just thought it was a defective model). Those had horrible amounts of lag. Surprised it never bothered you. The G700 absolutely destroys that model.

Just stick with it if you like it that much. No point in getting used to another mouse if you already have what sounds like the perfect mouse for you.

Feedback:

Ive had the RAT 7 For six months now. It has not been what I hoped it would be. Im back to the deathadder.

I wish I had a Steelseries Sensei. that looks like an awesome complex, yet elegant mouse. I still need to try it to see if its big enough. Deathader/RAT 7 has a good size.

No remember in that other thread .. Buying a good gaming mouse for around $99 is laughable right guys?

I have a$99 Logitech wireless/wired and its awesome. I like how it comes with a enlope battery that can be replaced easily but also charges through USB .

I have large hands and the mx518 almost fits like a glove. I'd like a slightly bigger one lol. Razor mice are really uncomfortable to me.

I used to like the weight and feel of the MX1000 but it wasn't as good of a mouse otherwise.

Anyone have any recommendations? Wired only though.

Going wireless was something I was exploring recently, but (un)fortunately the situation solved itself when I realised that I'm still using a crummy computer table with a kb&m tray and so I don't actually have the room for a larger keyboard, haha.

I would say don't write off the G700 because of that. I had the MX1000 and though it was terrible. Worst mouse I ever owned (which wasn't long, because I returned both units). The G700 is everything the MX1000 wasn't. It's a great gaming mouse. Better lag than a wireless 360 pad.

I was initially weirded out with their back/forward binding (it's left 'scroll' and right 'scroll')... but you know what? It makes much more sense this way then even having dedicated back/forward buttons.

I mean left/right scroll just doesn't really work with modern mice. Probably the only thing where it's ok on is a mightymouse. But the rest of that mouse sucks big time.

What's a good new mouse for someone who loved the MX518. I'm thinking maybe the G500? I don't really want to do wireless.

The G400 is pretty much the new MX518, but without angle snapping. The price is usually between 25-35, but it seems to have jumped up recently. The G500 is only a few dollars more on Amazon.

My G400 + QcK have been treating me right for a while now.

I don't think a func pad would be going strong after a decade. In fact, I'm pretty sure I would have worn a hole directly through the center.

The MX1000 was their first high-end one, I guess, yeah. My MX700 quit charging and they sent me the MX1000 as a replacement in 2004. I didn't have any lag problems with it at all, and I'm kind of wishing I'd gotten a used one off eBay or something instead of this G700s :(

Maybe I was just getting some weird interference then. But it put me so off to wireless mice, that I never tried again till the G700 (and only then because my Deathadder was beginning to double click and the G700 was on sale for 49.99 at Amazon. I figured what the heck.)

One of the problems with my old MX1000 that caused me to start looking for a new mouse is that its wireless signal seems to be fading, and I have to keep the receiver within a couple of feet of where I use it. I've opened it up and cleaned it out several times over the years, but it's been on its last legs for six months or so now. I was very satisfied with it, but it's possible you could sense lag that I don't notice.

Back in the day I primarily used Logitech for gaming mice (MX518 and G5). Since becoming a Mac user (a couple years ago) I switched to Razer because Logitech did not provide software for their gaming series (until recently). From the Razer line I have tried, Deathadder Black, Mamba, and Naga Epic and all are fine mice. I preferred the Deathadder Black and Mamba, but also preferred wireless. The problem with the Mamba was that the battery life sucked. I don't even game a lot, but most days I would find myself needing to plug in before the end of the night. If Razer were to make a mainstream (i.e. Not high end - I think they refer to it as their "Essentials" series mice) wireless mouse in the Deathadder/Mamba shape with better battery life, then I would probably go back.

I currently use a Logitech Performance MX. Not exactly a gaming mouse, but it suited my needs and had Mac support. Now that Logitech has FINALLY released Mac compatible software for their gaming line, I am tempted to give the G700/G700s a try.

As for Steelseries, I like their mice (have tried the Ikari and Sensei), but their lack of wireless mice (I believe the only one they have is the WoW mouse) makes me sad. A wireless Ikari mouse with decent battery life would be close to my dream mouse.

Well my Roccat Kone XTD is on the way home now as the Mamba is sold out everywhere and won't be in stock till next week. The store clerk said I can always exchange the XTD provided I keep it in pristine condition but sigh it is a strange feeling switching off the Mamba (for now only maybe) :/

I've been looking for a mouse for a while and it's been a long expensive quest, but I think I found one that I'm quite pleased with.

Started with logitech g500, loved the novelty of the scroll wheel modes and size in the hand;
then moved to a roccat kone+, great software and size but scroll wheel died;
next was a sensei raw rubber, simple & reliable but the ambidextrous form was making my arm sore, was also a bit small in the hand;
finally landed with a zowie evo ec1, good size, no software (everything on board), solid build quality.

What are some good lower-end mouses that I'll only really use for Guild Wars 2, Civ V, FPSs, and just doing regular computer stuff. Wired or wireless doesn't matter to me.

Get a Logitech G700. Avoid Razer products.

Just got this a couple of months ago. I just keep it plugged in and use it as a wired mouse all time time. Make sure you get the latest drivers for it, since you can set two of the buttons as Mouse4 and Mouse5, really helpful instead of having to have every extra button tied to a keystroke.

I replaced my Razer Deathadder with it, it was great, had it for 3 years, but one of the side buttons broke. I opened it up (long after being out of warranty) and saw that the lever that presses the button was broken, so there was no fixing it.

Another gripe with the G700s after another couple of days with it: the wheel toggle and the G11 button beneath it should have been swapped. As it is, it's not really a practical button to use for gaming because it's just too far away to hit without moving your hand, not just your finger. Since I'd use a usable button near the wheel (my last mouse had buttons both above and below the wheel) way more than toggling the wheel mode, it's just kind wasted where it is.

Are there any Roccat Kone users here? I have mine for 6 days now and while I really start to love it it seems that one of the four lights already went slightly bad :( I have it set so the two top colors are set to a deep-blue and the back colors are set to a reddish pink. This worked really great for the past 6 days though I just now noticed that the bottom-left light got alot colder and whiter than the bottom-right one :/ This is really apperant if I set the top-lights to blue and the bottom-lights to yellow, on the bottom-right the yellow looks like it should be while on the bottom-left it almost looks white :( It's really not a big deal but I wondered if this a a known issue or not and Google is no help...

The mouse itself works perfectly and I feel petty to complain about lights though I payed 80€ for it... and I would feel a bit weird about exchanging it about that :/

Dude. If it's defective then exchange it. 80 euros? I wouldn't be satisfied with a defect even if it is cosmetic.

Once I learned my grip choosing a mouse became so much simpler. I had a G500 that was never comfortable for me because I didn't use a palm grip, I was ignorant of mouse grips and bought the mouse based on good word of mouth.

I've been using the G9x for months now and it is simply perfect for my fingertip grip.
