Christopher Nolan to direct WWII film "Dunkirk", shot in IMAX 65mm

When where did he say that?
It was a joke. Wally took a break from being Nolan's DP so he could try to break into directing with Transcendence. And for some reason WB thought it a good idea to give him $100m+ for his directorial debut starring Johnny boxofficepoison Depp.

WB did it as a favor to Nolan. No way would they have given him that budget if it wasn't for Nolan backing the project.

I really don't get that Wally hate except for his one comment about the Avengers, which he actually was right about.

He was an excellent DP and hope he makes it as a director but if not he can continue as a DP.

TDKR was co-written by both Nolans, and Chris has said that he and his brother do a pass on every script anyway.

Since the movie is about the evacuation of the allied forces from Europe, it'd be nice if he did another movie about their eventual return. Really, I just want more well made WW2 movies.

I was thinking the other day that we are due another really good WWII movie, it's been a while since the last great ones. Can't wait to see what Nolan does with the setting/genre.

Yes, but TDKR and Interstellar also had Nolan write the last draft by himself. He took his brother's years-old script for Interstellar and re-worked it by himself. We know TDKR ended up being a lone writing affair for Nolan. In fact, I'm quite sure he's the only one he wrote a draft of the script. Goyer had story credit and Jonah just gave Chris his thoughts. That script was a fucking mess.

I want to say I heard an interview in the last year or two where Jonah said he handed Chris 400 pages for TDKR and Chris chopped it up until it could fit into one film.

Right, and some people acted like that meant Chris had shot a 400 minute movie. :lol

It sucks seeing Wally being treated like a turd because quite honestly he is really good with shots (especially if they are wide shots). Dude just wasn't ready for that director chair. You can clearly see some of Nolan's style rubbed off on him. Maybe he needs a good script? I dunno. I wont write him off just yet.

Tbh Wally will be perfectly fine continuing his career as a DP and is apparently a very nice guy in person.

But I still remember that interview he gave shitting on Seamus Mcgarvey's work in The Avengers when - as talented as Pfister is, he isn't half the DP Mcgarvey is, The Avengers notwithstanding. You just don't go throwing people under the bus like that.

Then there's all his obnoxiously condescending comments regarding digital.

I find Pfister to be an asshole every time he makes a comment in public.

I'm almost certain Nolan himself explained that he wrote TDKR by himself and just got thoughts from Jonah because Jonah's schedule was crazy.

I wasn't 100% sure yesterday, but Jonah did indeed wrote the first draft of TDKR. From the art and making book

Interstellar was by far Nolan's best looking and textured film, great news. It would be hilarious if supporting Wally in making Transcendence was Nolan's roundabout way of breaking up with him to work with new people. "Sooo sorry we won't be able to work on Interstellar together, you're so busy with that Depp movie that's sure to be a critical and financial hit that will be amazing for your career."

Everyone giving Pfister shit, just remember:

no. of oscars Nolan: 0
no. of oscars Pfister: 1

no.of oscars Leo diCaprio: 0

3 6 Mafia was one of the most worthy oscar wins of the century.

And interstellar is definitely nolan's best looking film but i'm not gonna call what pfister did with nolan a slouch either. There were some good collaborations there, hoyte's better tho.

To me, Interstellar`s cinematography was not as good as in previous Nolan`s movies.
I don`t know if it was the projection problem, but it looked out of focus quite few times.

Hoyte handhelded the big ass imax cameras. And pulling focus on 70mm film is very tricky (especially razor thin shallow dof shots). I mean i miss focus on my 35mm full frame sensor cam and imax is double that.

I think he wouldve learned from interstellar and dunkirk would be better.

Don't know if it's a coincidence or not but none of Nolan's movies that used IMAX have been nominated for Best Cinematography

Has Zimmer done any traditional orchestral scores? Because I'm not sure his usual electronic style would fit with WW2.

This is in relation to seeing someone say they hope Zimmer returns for the score.

Was getting caught part of your plan?
I find Pfister to be an asshole every time he makes a comment in public.

I watched the Side by Side documentary last year and the main take away I got from that was that Pfister seemed to be Steven Soderbergh's nemesis in that the former can't stop dissing digital and the latter can't stop dissing film.

Dark Knight. I've always thought Inception's win was partly to make up for DK not winning.

There are a few shots in Dark Knight captured in Imax: The Joker heist, Batman's capture of that dude in Hong Kong, the Dent/Joker/Batman chase filmed in Chicago etc. Whenever there were wideshots taking in the city, those were in Imax.

To name a few - Gladiator, The Lion King, The Last Samurai and Black Hawk Down.

Somehow this slipped entirely under my radar. Glad we're getting a well produced WWII movie though I think I would have preferred Normandy or its ilk more.

Wonder how much of a shaft the French will get ...

Yeah but Soderbergh's without coming off like a dick. I agree with Soderbergh anyway lol.

Didn't know he did any of those movies LOL. Alright, Hans, bring it on.

It will be a joke if he makes a PG-13 WW2 movie. I definitely won't be able to deal with seeing soldiers dropping as if they were suffering from narcolepsy.

Fury was rated 14A in Canada (Not sure if thats equivalent to PG-13, though) and that movie was pretty gory.

Fury was R. International ratings really aren't comparable.

Hmmm so that's why everyone dies so awkwardly in his batman movies, TDKR in particular

Nolan to France: "Can I borrow this old ship for my movie?"
France: "Sure."

Article (in French); translated to English

The Maille-Breze, today ship museum port of Nantes but first escort fleet of the Navy, will be used for shooting the next film by Christopher Nolan, Dunkirk.
...
In Dunkirk, the Maillé Brézé will be transformed, and towed to Dunkerque (Dunkirk =,;)) in order to interpret the role of many ships have evacuated in 1940, British soldiers trapped by the Nazis.

I won't be impressed unless he Herzogs the ship over a mountain.
