Chrono Trigger availability (discussion)

For real. SNES, SNES Classic, PS1, PS2, PS3, Vita, Android, iOS, and DS are plenty.

Ignoring your error about the SNES Classic that you were weird about...list should have Wii, then, if you include PS2 due to backwards compatibility, you should include Wii U and 3DS.

Glad I own both the SNES cart and DS version. Will probably download a VC copy of the game before the old Wii shop is shut down.

What would these rights issues be then? SE obviously don't mind since their games ended up on SNES mini anyway. Must be one of the composers holding it back?

Yeah, I've heard this theory lately and not sure how or why Toriyama's art would cause a problem with a CT re-release. It's not like he worked on the actual sprites and his art has ever prevented any of the DQ re-releases and remakes.

Are you expecting for every games to be playable on every generations or something? It's still playable on plenty of devices I really don't see the issue there.

Games as important and critically acclaimed such as chrono trigger should be available now, yes. Could you imagine if godfather wasn't on bluray?

Any game where you want a good dpad. So the majority of retro games, actually.

I could understand this sentiment with 360 controllers but now they are all fine. I played KI on Xbox and sf5 on a PS4 controller. I’m not a pro but they were just fine, if it can do that then I don’t see the needing it for retro games argument. I see it’s more of a port begging thing I guess. I don’t care what games to what systems anymore but posting that in every thread makes the poster look foolish in my opinion.

There is no reason they couldn't put the DS version on the Switch.

There is no reason to even bother with the snes version anymore. The DS version has a better translation and more content.

I did my part by purchasing the DS game on release date. I'm blaming this on the rest of you.

I mean, Earthbound had no official port but that didn't stop anyone from playing it all those years after.

Really though if for whatever reason getting a copy becomes stupid expensive on any format than just get a ROM of your favorite version.

I've never understood the "rights issues"... issue.

Why would a rights holder decline free money from someone else doing all the work for them?

The amount of money they want is simply exaggerated.
Or the rights are scattered around multiple heirs each one with their requirements and request.
Or personal matters.

I think you misunderstood me. I was saying that most games that rely on the dpad are poor on the Switch, because the Pro controller has a bad dpad.

In the case of Chrono Trigger, the unreliable dpad is less of an issue since JRPGs do not require extremely precise inputs.

It's basically Schinder's List. That film did not appear on DVD until 2004 and Blu-Ray until 2015. Before 2004 you still had all those working VHS tapes and if they broke or got too expensive you just taped it off the TV.

It was ridiculous a modern classic has such format availability issues and it is the same with Chrono Trigger although video games have this problem on a far greater scale. At least it hasn't been hit with the ugly stick and got a remake like Secret of Mana or Final Fantasy VI.

Question as a european. Do US DS games work in 3DS even though 3DS is region locked? Chrono Trigger is literally one of the first games I pirated next to FF6 due to being unavailable in europe and I buy it in a heartbeat if the made it possible (my multiple copies of FF6 as proof).

That and Xenogears, seriously 2 Square RPG’s that hit the top RPG of all time lists are barely available in europe.

I know there is the iOS version of Chrono Trigger but I won’t support that shit.

I certainly don't expect this, as it's the way consoles have worked since forever, with BC the exception, rather than the norm. However, it's something I want, even if it's unfeasible, and really, I don't know why someone wouldn't as many games playable on their platforms of choice as possible. With Consoles adopting more modern X86 architecture, I would love to see future platforms implement BC for the ones we have now, and focus on getting all the worthwhile stuff from previous gens remastered/ported/emulated/whatever so that everything is playable without having to hold on to old, obsolete, outdated hardware, cuz who wants to have to do that, right? However, I'm not sure how likely that sort of PC-like future would be for Consoles.

As for Chrono Trigger, the issue for me is that I've never played it, and would like to, but I no longer own any systems that could play it, except Android, I guess. I'm not about to play that version, so I would love a re-release.

You should get an Android phone, I hear they are backwards compatible with other Android phones.
Lol, sure, I have one, but I'd have it to play with Touch Controls. Ewww...

It's gross failure of this industry that it so readily throws it's past into complete obscurity, when there are easy, effective technical solutions that could preserve games pretty much on every platform, for ever.
Thank god the game had several physical releases. The digital future is a dystopian hellhole.
It's a choice, not some technical necessity. It shouldn't be up to so called "pirates" to make sure so many games don't get lost and forgotten.

I can't believe Square ported Chrono Trigger to psx, ds and nothing else.

:(
Two forward compatible systems isn't bad really.

Also I feel like people bitch about Capcom porting there games to everything ever made but now we're upset about companies not porting their games to everything ever made?

I've never bitched about it, personally. I love buying all their ports over and over, lol. Would gladly do the same with other companies games.

Chrono Trigger is still my favorite game of all time so I would love for it to be available on every system/device. The original version, not the DS one. I wouldn't mind an HD 2D remake of the original...

I was listening to a podcast recently, I forget which, that implied there were rights issues to the game. Something to do with the art maybe? I forget.
They didn't go into much detail.

I heard this on a podcast recently too. I only listen to Easy Allies, the GI Show, Nintendo Voice Chat and the Dark Pixel Podcast, so it would have been on one of those.

I believe this was mentioned briefly on Friend Code; the Easy Allies Nintendo podcast. The context was that one of the rights holders may not have been entirely on board with the DS version and since then the possibility of more versions has been harmed as a result. They didn't go into much more detail than that on the show.

Yeah I heard this on the Easy Allies Friend Code podcast (I think the link was already posted in this thread). Was a surprise to me and really sucks moving forward. Rights issues are so weird in Japan.

Man I hate video game "tests". If they want another chance to gauge feedback, a Kickstarter for a true "Chrono Break" with as much as the original Chrono Trigger team back as possible would probably do gang busters.

Yeah, his response really irritated me. The DS version was full priced at $39.99 (not that it was a bad price per se as that is technically the best version of the game) and marketed poorly too if I recall, what did they expect? But yeah, companies like SE and Capcom do like their "test" nonsense.

Yes, DS games are region-free even on the 3DS.

Even SE realized they messed up with that answer because the end of the article says the full interview would be posted soon, but when it was posted there was absolutely no mention of Chrono Trigger in it as SE PR requested the site to remove that part.

Yoshinori Kitase also stated that he was surprised by the success of Chrono Trigger DS.

IIRC, they went with:
goodmorningcrono.com
Which really confused reviewers because the re-translation had changed that line of dialogue (I think it was reverted for the retail release).

Chrono Trigger DS was one of those games where the US release was over produced and fell in price really quickly and the eventual European released had next to no copies produced as a result. But that 2008 over produced, 2009 under produced effect (yeah European release of Chrono Trigger DS was several months later) also happened with Dragon Quest IV and V (and you see how that franchise had a troubled relationship with the west ever since).
Plus us in Europe did not have Square-Enix reprinting millions of copies to sell on their store for a song. At least those games came out in Europe unlike Front Mission...

I own Chrono Trigger on so many systems, I even purchased it twice for the DS so I could keep one sealed. If it's released on any of the current-gen consoles, I will purchase it again. Money well-spent.

I love how Michael Damiani just made up a story about Chrono Trigger being unavailable since the DS release....when its been re-released 3 or 4 times since the DS version.

He literally talked right out his ass...and now we have a thread about it. Fake news is a helluva thing.

It's a bit weird that CT isn't available on PC, even as a crappy FF5PC/FF6PC-esque port. Final Fantasy Tactics, which has also been on Android/iOS forever, is another curious omission. (Maybe they're saving them for an opportune time?)

Thank god the game had several physical releases. The digital future is a dystopian hellhole.

Aaaaaand the Most Hyperbolic Post of the Thread award goes to...

Thanks to both for the additional info and clarfication. Sounds like either way SE can't blame fans much for how they handled it.

It was never removed though:

"Arc Impulse"

eULY7VG.png

In the final version of the game, Crono gets an assisted-jump, Marle tosses ice magic to Crono's sword at the height of his jump, and then Crono comes down with flames somehow on his sword.

In a beta version of the game, and on the box art, Marle tosses fire magic to Crono's sword. In the beta screenshot, Crono and Marle are both clearly in the first half of Crono's jump.

At some point in development, Marle was a fire magic user, and then she was changed to an ice magic user, and the flames present in Arc Impulse (which is the triple-tech referenced in both the box art and the beta screenshot, one of which was amusingly based on the other) are a holdover that was overlooked.

What kind of dismissive post is this? It's not an outrageous expectation to want a pretty landmark game become accessible through modern platforms such as Steam.

I always wondered why Marle was shown sending fire to Crono's sword on the box art instead of Lucca. Never knew about this, very interesting.
