Dipped my toes into this on a day off yesterday... it started to get its claws into me.

As you start to unlock more and more, there's a temptation to just bulldoze your city and start from scratch with a better plan. Do people do that? Or do unlocks re-lock if your city's pop drops?

You keep your unlocks, and I demolish parts of my city all the time.

I like to challenge myself to bulldoze as little as possible while building a new bypass or something. It's more real and you sometimes end up with interesting solutions. Plus you start to respect your real city's planners more.

Well, it seems an unexpected side effect to loading up that 404K save file is that it unlocked all except one Unique building for me. (The courthouse) I built everything I had and now have 4 our of 5 Monuments available. So I deleted all my police stations and parks and am watching the crime rate slowly rise. Though it's only up to 22%. We'll see.

Me too. I like to try and squeeze in solutions as my city evolves. Like you say, it's more interesting and it feels like the city has history. So whilst I may demolish a road here or there, the general structure of the city remains the same, just with some stuff shoehorned in, some streets upgraded or changed to one-way, etc.

It would be interesting I think to pay a heavy toll for demolishing buildings that are already standing so you really have to think about evicting people.

I lost four hours of a new city. I managed to grow to 50k pretty quickly but then my game just froze. I got the auto save mod, never again.

I agree that once you've figured out how to get off the ground and not expand too hastily, the game becomes very easy. Once you're over the hump, the biggest challenge is traffic, traffic, traffic, and then making sure you have enough services and facilities to cover everyone.

I would love a disaster mechanic to throw a wrench in your plans (I accidentally flooded my city by building a dam too high, imagine having to deal with that for a a week), as well as external factors such as booms and busts in particular industries, and more involvement with your neighbours.

Something like the quests in Civilization: Beyond Earth could be fun too. The game will give you a challenge, and then you have to decide what to do with the reward, and make decisions with clear tradeoffs (although this got repetitive in Civ:BE).

Great idea. At the moment there's no real punishment for doing so. Would be cool to see crime rates and homelessness go up, resulting in more riots, fires, and decreased land value.

While I was waiting for my crime rate to rise (Up to 28% now.. wait, now it went down to 27%, dammit) a fire broke out at one of my solar plants, which caused my water pumps to die. Don't worry though, Fireman Bill is on the case!

Someone has already created a flood challenge map (relocate your city before the flood hits). It's in the workshop somewhere...

I'm hoping that modders can come up with challenges, even simlple ones like "get to 50k exports in 2 years", but also more complex ones.

I think we'll see those really soon, the modding capabilities of the game are off the charts and it seems really simple to implement.

Working on creating some nice maps with the editor myself, but it's not the easiest.
Grabbing some good heightmaps is crucial to have believable landscapes, if anyone is interested, try this site to grab some from locations worldwide : http://terrain.party/

Anyone found a good New York city map? With proper terrain height and scale? Every map I've looked at has been terrible. Crispy you should do NYC next...

No they don't relock. I think most people just start new cities (I'm on my forth).

Me too. In fact I'd quite like to see a mod that really discourages bulldozing. Make it cost money, and maybe an unhappiness bump when you bulldoze something old/valuable?

Cheers!

If you start a new city (new map), do your unlocks from a previous city carry over? Or start from scratch?

If it's monuments/award buildings they stay unlocked. All the population based locks relock on a new city or you can play with the unlocks off through the mod.

There needs to be more reward unlocks.

A better feeling of progression.

And roundabouts that aren't massive.

Also disasters, and things like military bases and stuff with bigger pros and cons.

I've uploaded my first custom map. Feedback very welcome :)

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=409670953

It's the shoreline and valleys around Santa Cruz, California. I've included the local highways and railway in as accurate a location as I could manage. Lots of fast flowing rivers in this one, so the potential for hydrodynamic mishaps is high. Enjoy!

(I have no connection with the area whatsoever - I just thought the geography was interesting)

The rivers should be deeper, but it's a good looking map!

edit: Oh you should fix this.

Oh yuck! I thought I'd caught all of those. Thanks!

I'll do one more round of adjustments before pimping it out on the subreddit :)

EDIT: Could someone tell me how I update the same map in Workshop instead of uploading a new one each time?

  1. Create your mod (v1)
  2. Upload to Steam Workshop
  3. Subscribe to your own mod
  4. Edit the mod in Addons/Mods directory (right where you created the original)
  5. Go to the Content Manager in the main menu and select the Mods tab
  6. Now your own mod is displayed twice (the updated local mod and the old Steam workshop mod)
  7. Click the Update button on the Steam workshop mod
  8. In the lower right hand corner of the image a small directory icon is visible. Clicking it will open finder/explorer to the WorkshopStagingArea
  9. Copy the .dll (and source) from the Addons/Mods dir (this is your newly compiled updated mod), into this dir and overwrite all
  10. Go back to the game and push the big Update button
  11. Enjoy the game with updated mods :)

That's one prob I have with preset interchanges. It'll be nice if it molded to your existing highways, but I think that's impossible to do well.

I rarely use the preset interchanges because I'm either on a slope or working with a curved highway. On the plus side I've gotten very good at building my own interchanges wherever I need them. I did a roundabout stacked highway interchange last night with two curved highways crossing at about a 30° angle, looks good and works great, but there isn't anything like it in the workshop from what I can tell.

Once you get the hang of it, making interchanges from scratch really isn't that bad.

Does anyone know if there's a mod that allows you to place parks anywhere without having to connect to a road? I suppose connecting to a pedestrian path would be okay. I'm sure I can use the zoning on ped paths mod to do this, but it would be nice to be able to put a park in the middle of a block of houses or apartments.

Why are there dozens of passenger trains blocking my one track around the city with about 5 stops making it seem they're transporting hundreds of thousands of passengers.

But when I click on a train I get 5 passengers or a train with one.

Are they tourist trains? They don't pick up your citizens. If you want to use trains for public transport, you need a segregated network with a specified route, like Metro and Bus routes.

I guess they're tourist trains because they're connected to the outside, but still there are way too much compared to the amount of actual visiting tourist.

I'll try seperating them, see how that goes.

I think the number of tourist trains is proportional to the number of tourist stations. Just have one station connected to the outside world, and keep the rest on their own line.

So I see that the game doesn't officially support any internal graphics in any way which is mostly understandable, but some searching seems to suggest that it is at least theoretically possible if you don't mind running that game at absolutely minimum settings, which I'd be fine with. Hell, I'd be happy just messing around with the custom interchange tool.

i5 4440 @ 3.1GHz
Intel HD 4600
8GB RAM

Buying a graphics card of some sort is obviously an option but I don't know if the stock PSU in my desktop would be able to power anything that would give better results than the internals. People seem to have tried with less, though with highly mixed results.

I have similar specs to you and was able to find a pretty cheap GTX 660 on eBay used. What kind of PSU do you have? I was able to skirt by without upgrading my PSU.

I tryed it on my Surface Pro 2 (Intel Core i5-4200U + Intel HD Graphics 4400), and with the lowest settings at 720p I get between 15 and 25 FPS depending on the city, so it should be good on your PC :)

So I have 3 coal power plants and it says that it's coal storage lasts for another 2 weeks, am I screwed? How do I get more coal for the power Plants? :/

Coal should be imported to the plants, so maybe you've almost exhausted the supply running three plants. (Is this a thing?) Or maybe you need more connections, like a train or harbor connection. (How about this?)

Otherwise, I'd just start plopping down offshore wind turbines if that works well on your map.
