It's just my rant. JRPGs are the most bankrupt genre out there in terms of reviews. Heavily inflated scores. Been a decade of low tier stuff with the exception of a handful of games. Most reviewers are the "JRPG guy" that only plays JRPGs, inflates the scores of anything that makes it out the door half way functional.
Agree.

There are some gems. But mostly I cannot finish.

Game design have moved quite a bit ahead.

Fantastic, this always had "big swing" energy that was either gonna be a 90+ or like a 70. So happy it turned out. It's preloaded on my PS5 and ready to go, weekend plans set! As a turn based RPG fan I now expect a heavy contender for my GOTY.

After all the FF7 Rebirth praise last year I'm reluctant to trust these high scores and positivity. Outdoing Squenix isn't praise imo.

Any good video reviews that really talk about and have good combat gameplay footage? I don't like ACG and I stopped watching Mortismal a while back.

IGN have like 40 minutes of raw gameplay.
And their reviewer is someone who loves classic JRPGs.
He has a pretty concise non-spoilery review.

wow, nice scores.
It's one of my most anticipated games of the year but I voted low 80s because I thought there would be some rough edges and AA jank.

Glad to see I was wrong and they absolutely nailed it.

Man, I really hope this is a success.
It's a new IP, with a cool concept and setting, made by a relatively small team with a reasonable budget while still looking visually impressive and sold at a lower $50 price in a time when we've already had a publisher go for the $80 price point.
It doing well would really help send a positive signal to the industry.

I'll toss a nod to the $30 (on sale) Eternal Strands also. Really enjoyed it. We have options if people will play them.

- (Apparently) DEI free.

for Neogaf average user standards this is pretty DEI if you ask me.

I will. Getting in Steam. We need more big budget turn based games. I hope people who play it on Gamepass support the devs if they like it.

I still wonder how are devs & studios receiving due compensation with gamepass.
It is quite a mystery to me.
I get it for multiplayer/Live Service games but others ?

Edit : Please guys put your games screenshots into a spoiler tag, i do not want to see anything. I've managed so far to avoid every informations and would love to keep it that way.

Wish 16 year old me got something like this growing up, looks amazing. 45 year old me just can't be bothered with turn based combat.

Though I think this is a major victory for people who prefer that style combat without the anime and horrible dialogue.

As you age you should like turn based combat more and not the opposite.

I'm not sure. that's what I'm saying . Something is off to me.

Uninspired probably isnt the word you are looking for.

Try word your critique better, cuz from everything ive seen of this game calling it uninspired is nigh literally the opposite of what this is.
From some more spoilery reviews the later worlds and abilities are actually even more creative than what we have been shown so far.

Pretty sure Gamepass pays out a lump sum and if the deal is sweater you also get something for player numbers.
As a small developer I can understand wanting the money upfront, they can/could probably pay back a good portion of their investment just on the Gamepass money.
I believe its the same for EGS, devs sometimes take the deal to get a bunch of money ASAP instead of waiting for the game to recoup, word of mouth hopefully gets you well into the green from there.

Most if not all of Keplers games have either been EGS, Gamepass or PS+ titles.
Their tactic is clearly working as they keep publishing games....looking at the size of Expedition 33 hopefully they can now publish more AAA-esc games.

Most reviewers are the "JRPG guy" that only plays JRPGs, inflates the scores of anything that makes it out the door half way functional. I could barely finish the demo for Atelier Yumia. Pointless combat, forgettable story, Vita level graphics and it's an 80 on MC. Unreal 5 WRPG with multiple excellent builds, possible best in genre combat Avowed is an 81. Avowed being an 81 is fine for me honestly, but Yumia is more like a 70 at best. You could probably subtract 10 points from almost every JRPG released in the last decade with the exception of Xenoblade, Triangle Strategy, maybe the new Yakuza (I haven't played it so I don't know). PS3 level Metaphor being a 90 while being virtually identical to Persona is extreme exaggeration.

To show how massively inflated those scores are, here you have a new team making their 1st game as a company with a AA budget, AA pricing and it's likely going to be massively better. Looks 2 generations ahead of Persona 5. And there are versions of Atelier Yumia that are $110. They need to be brought down a peg because it's super mediocre. Reminds me of Sea of Stars being $25 from a team that's never made an RPG and blowing out most classic style RPGs for the last 10 years. Reviews in this genre need a reckoning, imho.

Agreed, and it's been that way more than 10 years. Probably more like 15-20. You'd always see reviews like "it's got a 16 year old kid with a sword, XP, turn based battles, and anime tropes out the ass. If you don't like it, that's because you just don't like JRPGs. 8.2/10"

The genre has been stagnant for so long that all that's left is this niche audience of 2-3 million gamers who gobble up any JRPG they can get their hands on and who still think they're under assault from the rest of the gaming world.

If this turns out to be really good, I vote that we retroactively lower the scores of Persona and Metaphor. Who's with me?
I think we should officially rename "JRPG" to "FRPG" from now on

I'm super bummed I couldn't get the Collectors Edition for this. I kind of feel like paying almost $400 for it on Ebay would still be a good deal in the long run but I don't have that kind of money to blow on a game right now.

Love seeing games like this come basically out of nowhere and be so good though. The First Berserker Khazan is my favorite game so far this year. Let's see if this can actually compete or top it.

It's cool to see a jrpg with adults.

Looks like I buying yet another game lol. I figured it would get a good score so I voted 90-94. Glad to see it doing so good. Hopefully it stays

i do agree whit you, there something that looks off, but even i can't really pinpoint what it is....

EDIT: maybe are the protagonists that look a tad bland?
Maybe because the protagonists are realistic adults with calm demeanor, decent uniforms and normal sized weapons instead of being angry emo teens with giant swords and ridiculous outfits ?

while true that they don't look like anime charaters, maybe some change to the silouettes of them could have helped, whit the exception of the mage, they look like the same characters when the camera is far away.

but mine are but a minor nitpicking, i need to check futher.

Anyone read about weapons/armour/ accessories etc? Different weapons and the like or are you stuck with one weapon/amour that you upgrade?

Absolutely. Even Mae, the youngest one of the group (I believe she's either a teenager or early-20s at most), seems like she is so much more mild-mannered and pleasant to be around than a lot of JRPG characters lol.
Is there gonna be a scene where she + the protagonist accidentally see each other naked at a hot spring and realize they have feelings for each other?

I saw in a Youtube comment that ex Ubisoft devs are part of the new studio. Makes me wonder what other creative developers are being wasted at Ubisoft.

Sorry if that's old news, I have actually not paid much attention to this game before yesterday.
