I was interested in this game when I saw its announcement. But with all of these reviews praising the game, calling it a GotY, a masterpiece, I'm absolutely convinced. Everything looks and sounds phenomenal.

It's been a long time since I've been this hyped about playing a new IP, and an RPG at that. I might even get the deluxe edition to support the devs.

Jesus, this has been a whirlwind week for me.

- started Lunar 1 on Monday

- decided I'll hold off on Lunar 1 until I can mod the original Sega CD soundtrack into it, and I'll play Lunar 2 in the meantime

- Decided maybe I'll hold off on starting Lunar 2 until after Oblivion remaster

- decided I'll hold off on Oblivion until after Clair Obscur

Anybody else want to top Clair Obscur? You got like 24 hours.

I started off this week playing Star Wars Outlaws. Safe to say.......my plans for the rest of the week shifted dramatically.

Fuck me those reviews!

Glad I pre-ordered!

I hope this game performs better than FFXVI & FFVII: Rebirth.

Someone needs to teach fucking SE that's there's still a lot of life left in the turn-based RPG genre yet, and importantly (hopefully) a mammoth modern market for it.

I hope GAF will buy this game at launch. As gamers we need to send the message that this is the kind of release we want: Good graphics, good soundtrack, good story, good gameplay, no ugly characters or woke shit, and a reduced price to boot. I'll certainly be doing my part to support this game tomorrow.

Agree.

There are some gems. But mostly I cannot finish.

Game design have moved quite a bit ahead.
You should try metaphor.

In metaphor there are two gameplay systems. There is a turn based system that is the lower system.

Then there is the overworld. Overworld combat varies depending on class of the MC and most mobs can be dealt with this way or skipped. The overworld combat is rather shallow but perhaps not as much as you would expect. It is action based and allows for a rolling dodge.

Mostly the overworld combat is for mobs lower than your level, think the trash mobs in the dungeon. Bosses are all turn based and of course you have the option to go turn based at any time. If you play well in overworld combat even if don't beat the enemy, you will get an advantage when the turn based combat does begin. I think this double combat system helped alleviate a lot of the usual turn based issues in jrpgs and it is one of the most interesting features I've seen come along in a jrpg. You still get full resources when you beat an enemy in overworld combat so you can actually grind for hours and never go turn based. I think it is a big reason this game was so well reviewed. That said as far as jrpgs go, I disagree. I think perhaps you play a few traditional jrpgs like DQ3 remake and think all jrpgs have stagnated. They haven't imho. If you haven't tried I would suggest these: Romancing Saga 2, chained echos, star ocean second story r, xenoblade games, triangle strategy, metaphor, Witchspring R, unicorn overlord, or Clair Obscur expedition 33.

The devs are like "have this highly rated game....for $20 less than that shit the other publishers are pushing on you"

I really hope the game delivers, both for us and for the devs.

I have tried a few of those. I do feel there are gems here and there like Unicorn Overlord.

Since you talked about Metaphor, i do feel after so many iterations, Sega should've iterated its combat system to perfection. It still feels slightly sloppy.

One of my favourite jrpg turn based combat system is Bravely Default on 3DS. That one I can play just for combat. Feels thrilling to win the fights.

That sort of level I would expect these games to reach after so many iterations.

It could be a matter of taste though.

I've always felt like I should've been born in France. I grew up watching French cartoons and reading French comic books. The French culture always resonated with me.

My goal is to start learning French so I can someday move to France and get a job making FRPGs.

And who knows, maybe I can meet a nice French girl and do my part to reverse the population decline in France.

My spring and summer just got absolutely loaded. Oblivion Remastered, Doom: The Dark Ages, Elden Ring: Nightreign, Lies of P: Overture, Dying Light: The Beast, and now this along with potentially The First Beserker and Death Stranding 2. Just when I was knocking off things from my backlog.

I'll be downloading it on Game Pass - does that count?

This really overperformed with the critics and the lower price really helps wanting to give it a go. Hopefully other developers take notes a look into releasing higher profile games with turn based combat.
