Classic FM (UK) presents 2 video game music specials today (24/05)

Well, im not really talking this channel in particular as im not even in the UK, but im just saying the general mindset that classical music is dying with the new generations when in fact it isnt its just being redefined slightly.

edit; oh man this FF track is so good.

It is indeed being redefined~! More consistent themes, less varied ranges of emotions being displayed (This isn't a bad change; it's just a change that cam be good or bad). Although that said, the tracks played so far seem to be more similar to classical music than most videogame tracks.

I dont know about less variation. With the indie scene popping up you suddenly have everything from bombastic to minimalist and everything in between.

I actually meant in a single track/piece. Sorry if I was being vague~

I think that is more because you make a track for a specific aspect of gameplay over the music existing on its own. What we are hearing now is actually like 20 tracks remixed together which mimics the old style.

And we still get the old style when music is made for storytelling moments

Same thing happened when Hanna Barbera won Oscars for using classical music in Tom & Jerry cartoons.

So at 5, is it anything goes for music or just classical tracks?

They'll still have to be within the spectrum of classical music, but if this one is anything like last time it should still be pretty varied choice.

Mhm, true, that.

In any case, i'm not complaining. I love videogame music and classical music equally.

Man what has happened to video game music. This stuff is still amazing and blows away nearly everything today. If anything, technology has improved graphics, gameplay etc but soundtracks have most of the time been downgraded in terms of actually having a good track playing. It's very rare now.

I remember Grant Kirkhope went on a huge rant about modern videogame music and how much he hates most of it. His main problem was the lack of good melody in a lot of modern game music.

Okay. It's slightly weird to hear a concert I've actually attended on Classic FM.

(Albeit the recordings rather than live, but still)

just tuned in, sounds like zelda, have they done MGS yet?

Nope, this is the first one.

That segue in to Dark World still gets the hairs on the back of my neck top stand on end

I always picture if they ever do a Zelda movie they'd use that in a teaser trailer. You get that segue, and then Link drawing the Master Sword and riding across Hyrule Field on Epona

We'll be hearing more of Koji Kondo later on, woo.
