Well, with the exception of that punkass Boozer, verbal agreements were as good as gold in the past because adults know that "word is bond."
Sure, I mean this whole thing feels wrong and I feel bad for Mavs fans, but still. The fact that there's this weird courting period without actual contracts being signed is dumb. Kinda hope the NBA changes that in the future and lets people sign earlier.

Something needs to be done to prevent players from locking their teammates in their houses and not letting anyone talk to them. That's fucking weird and dirty.

NBA needs to not allow shit like that. Makes the entire game look bad and unprofessional.

I don't think they literally held him hostage. THe league can't tell DeAndre Jordan that he has to kick the Clippers out of his house. THere is nothing about this that the league really has any jurisdiction to do anything about.

people actually think they were holding DJ hostage?

lulz. DJ had cold feet and then didnt have the dignity/guts to face Cuban or Parsons so he stayed in his house with the rest of the clippers and fucked around until he signed the contract.

Has this ever happened in reverse?

i.e. a team commits to a player, only to reneg because something better came along? And now the player has lost a heap of options of where to sign because for all intents and purposes they were already locked up by another team?

The Players Association would go nuts if that happened, right?

I mean, DJ's mom ordered food for all of his friends. It was more of a sleepover than anything.

Not free agency but CP3 to the Lakers. It was a done deal. Then Gilbert and Cuban cried foul and Paul had to go to what was at the time a less-than-desirable destination.

no but that's mostly because if a team did that it would piss off agents and potentially other teams. Front offices have to be much more protective of their reputations in this way. A player doesn't have to be. As much of a waffle as Jordan looks like, if he were a free agent again next year teams would line up for the chance to sign him.

Different situation. The Hornets at the time were owned by the league and they ended up getting a better deal out of it.

Hindsight is 20/20 of course, so i'd argue no, it wasn't a better deal

NOLA would have gotten Goran Dragic, Luis Scola (he was still good at this point), Kevin Martin, and a still useful Lamar Odom along with a 1st round pick.

Instead they got Eric Gordon, Al Fariq Aminu, Chris Kaman and Austin Rivers (the pick).

Then again, had they actual gotten that trade, NOLA would have won way more than 21 games and would not have been able to get Anthony Davis, so I guess you're right after all.

hehe, wow.
kinda reminds me of the antonio mcdyess with phx/den (only the suns failed, thx to issel).

During the NBA lockout in the winter of 1999, he was negotiating with both the Suns and Nuggets. He and the Nuggets had a verbal agreement for Antonio to return to Denver. However, he had second thoughts, and considered re-signing with the Suns. According to Sports Illustrated, McDyess invited Jason Kidd, Rex Chapman, and George McCloud to Denver to talk things over. While attending an Avalanche hockey game at McNichols Arena, Dan Issel told security to not let the three Suns players into the building. Without any further consultation, he re-signed with the Nuggets.

In Washington when Juwan Howard was a free agent there was a big push to get him to resign with the team.

And then he signed with Miami. And everyone started talking bad about him.

And then the league told Miami thanks for playing and unsigned him. And then Howard signed with Washington and was cool again.

The only thing that's changed for the Clippers is that now they actually deserve all of the bad things that always happen to them. What a bunch of clowns. I'd call them bush league but even the bush league would be embarrassed by them.

Well, not in NBA, but there was an interesting set of circumstances around the Sauber team in this year's F1 season; for a team of two drivers, they signed three.

Here's a brief synopsis of what went on.

1. we don't know how it went down
2. for all we know DJ called the Clippers
3. i'm sure all the other franchises would've hanged up the phone to be classy.

Not free agency but CP3 to the Lakers. It was a done deal. Then Gilbert and Cuban cried foul and Paul had to go to what was at the time a less-than-desirable destination.

how were the clippers a "less-than-desirable-destination".
ROFL, that's not even remotely true.

people were loving them after BGs rookie year.
CP3 could've left after one year but he didn't, he was always cool with going to the clippers. no way the clippers would've rented him for one year if he didn't gave them some sort of commitment. reports always said that LAL or LAC are on his wishlist. heck, CP 'opted in' to stay at least two years just minutes after the trade was done.

Clippers/Mavs won't even be a great game. Unless they make the best GM moves ever they will be a lottery team. Its said to see my favorite player Dirk go out like this on my favorite team. Wouldn't be shocked if Dirk just retires and Cuban sells the team.

In comparison to the Lakers. I phrased it wrong. Phrasing should have been less desirable. The idea at the time, Dwight and Chris Paul joining Kobe would have created a super team. Whole reason they nixxed the deal. If you remember the letter that Cuban wrote, it had nothing to do with basketball reasons. It was wahh Lakers will be too good, stop this Stern! With Gilbert doing the same, and apparently a bunch of owners backing them.

CP3 to the Clippers simply made them a good team in their eyes.

Mavs about to be playing in the bush league, tho.

When the Clippers play the Mavericks in Dallas...That should be some memorable TV

You mean DA Jordan getting intentionally fouled and watching him miss free throws? Mavs fan here and I am ok with the Mavs not getting him so I don't have to watch shit games especially when we play the Spurs. We are going 7 or 8 seed like every year regardless.

Not this year you aren't.

Yeah the Mavs will pick up enough 30+ free agents to scoot into the playoffs. The West is strong but top heavy. After the 5 best teams it gets pretty weak.

Nope.

Warriors, Spurs, Rockets, Grizz, Clips, Thunder, Pellies are all playoff teams. Mavs are lotto bound.

I feel awful for the Mavs but this whole thing has been one of the funniest debacles in recent history.

Blame Cuban for wasting Dirks final years in the league
You don't break up a championship team instantly , that's just dumb

Clippers still aren't winning anything

Haha at that "Paul Pierce sent his text from his game boy color"

You think he would have learned from Steve Nash but he didn't. He thinks he can attract big free agents and he never does. Cuban probably scares them off by grossing them out with his doucheness.
