I found it fascinating:
When talking bout history with my Indian colleague (yes, you can read it on wiki and where not, but getting native angle is interesting).
In his version of the events of the Indian independence, there was an army poised to fight (and likely win hands down).
Brits, he said, found it easier to digest peaceful transition and this is how Gandhi has become so famous, even though his role in the fight for independence is vastly overrated.
I haven't tried to validate these claims (not an easy task).
