No, Trump supporters and Bernie supporters are completely different. There wouldn't be much crossover. Also it would be almost impossible for him to put a viable independent run at this point with no money and no campaign structure set up.
I don't think his point was about the two bases crossing over. Bernie isn't running independent because he doesn't want to divide the democratic base and increase Trump's chances in winning.

Why is that something to celebrate?

The whole world should be worried about either candidate.

To each their own. I'm a proud supporter (and donator) to Hillary, and both sides are definitely not the same in this election. One will give us (at worst) an Obama third term; the other might very well give us World War III.

I dont support anyone in this election, or know a whole lot of politics, nor am I a "Bernie Bro", But would it be possible if Trump drops out and Bernie says "fuck it I'll run as an independent" and steal some votes from people who hate hillary with a drop out from Trump? Is that even possible or allowed at this stage?
Nah. Just logistically, it's too late to start mounting an independent campaign. The filing deadline to get on the ballot has already passed or nearly so in a lot of states, and the rest aren't far behind. This page has a lot of info if you're curious about the details: https://ballotpedia.org/Filing_dead...for_independent_presidential_candidates,_2016

It's a shame really - if he had reigned in his worst excesses, ran on a platform where his economic policies reflect his rhetoric, steered clear of abortion and continued his line on strong immigration reform without the more incendiary comments he'd be a shoe in (in addition to being the most progressive Republican in living memory).

Yes, if Trump were a completely different person, things wouldn't be the way they are. That is very true.

No, because the GOP would put someone else in I am assuming. Must keep unity.

Unless Trump abdicates, I believe that is impossible. As long as he draws breath, he is the GOP nominee. They cannot replace him at this stage. That's what the primaries, and the convention, were all about.

Maybe now we can finally see a third party take over.

Ugh. Our country would be fucked with Jill Stein. She's got some decent ideas, but she has about as much knowledge and experience to be potus as Trump. She doesn't understand the nuance required for politics.

If a third party were to rise from the ashes of the GOP, I'd hope it would be the libertarians. I don't agree with lot of their platform, but they at least have a basic understanding on how to run a country.

I honestly can't wait for the tell all.

"I told them using an android as a candidate was a bad idea. The coloration was clearly messed up that no one could have seriously believed he was human, and he just kept breaking down, making contradictory statements, if not outright bigoted statements. It was a real mess. Yet somehow millions of people were still rooting for him."

some of them do. the naked guy had an iron cross tattoo didn't he?

I wonder if this stuff being thrown at him is finally starting to get to trump and if he will realise perhaps president isnt a position to get into unless you enjoy politics which I don't believe trump does.

Democrats winning without even trying is not good for anyone.

That being said, I was surprised there wasn't much of a pivot to the center from Trump, this explains it.

the fact that he is still competitive makes this news even worse. if he actually gets in, how do you think the government is going to function? it won't.

we will literally have a do-nothing president unable to get people to do any of the work

i cant fathom whether a non-functioning executive branch is worse than a destructive one or not. they're practically one and the same

it won't be, because libertarian ideology is very "government hands off" which does not fly at ALL with the evangelical wing of the GOP. They are very much into legislating morality (gay marriage bans, abortion bans, marijuana bans, etc) which is in complete opposition to the libertarian platform.

and unfortunately there are WAY more evangelicals than libertarians. Evangelicals are about a third of the GOP overall and a full HALF of GOP primary voters. without them there is no viable libertarian party, only a GOP splinter group that gets its ass handed to it by democrats once a year.

I'm just hoping this results in Johnson being in the debates. It would be so much better if the debates were about actual policy than "I would defend American gooder" and "I'd get them terrorists gooder". And other empty statements.

Lmao! Hey I never said I'd vote for them :P. Just that they are probably the only third party that could potentially take over. Just goes to show why people generally don't take third parties seriously.

But the question was a hypothetical if Trump dropped out.

Yes! Tear it all down. Chump needs to just give up and withdraw, 96 hours of straight fuckery. 96

And, at the very least, Gary Johnson has held significant elected office before.

What a disaster without the dems even doing anything.
Nobody snatches defeat from the jaws of victory better than Democrats, but man, we're in some seriously uncharted waters now.

I fear we've only just begun the true silly season that is American presidential elections.

And you know what this means right?

We're gonna need more popcorn. Because this is just getting started.
Haha, yup. We're on the same page here.

Good news! One of the people on the stage is a policy wonk, who has never used the phrase gooder in her life.

If you want Trump to lose, you want him on the stage 1 v 1 vs Hillary.

The joke is that Trump will drop out to save his ego but seriously - what happens if the Republicans literally have no nominee? Does it delay the election or anything? Or is it just Democrat nominee vs independents and 3rd party?

I'd like someone, anyone, to challenge Democrats on interventionist foreign policy. Trump vs Hillary would be a pandering fest to who loves America more. Probably some good jabs from Hillary against Trump's horrible ideas, but there would still be way too much of the norm.

As long as Trump stays the course destroying himself and the party....No worries.
