CNN: Comey now believes Trump was trying to influence him, sources say

That is the 3rd poster I have seen try to argue that nonsense since it originated on zerohedge and got posted on r/The_Donald. That is probably where Hannity got the idea in the first place since his show aired the day after it appeared on zerohedge.

All of that is fine. Trump went and killed that possible defense by saying "I fired Comey because of Russia". Comey can just say "I wasn't aware of it, but in hindsight, that looks like what was happening".

The clear question was whether the Department of Justice has asked the FBI to stop cases in the past.

Trump is not part of the Department of Justice.

Hate Hannity's guts but he played a recording of Comey's last congressional hearing before he was fired.

This is probably going to get Comey into deep shit considering that he categorically denies having experienced interference or a request to halt of an FBI investigation for a political reason.

I've been watching Hannity for the first time for the last couple of days, and I remember seeing this. And I immediately thought, "Oh shit. He just admitted that no one has tried to obstruct his investigation."

But I didn't notice the first time around that he was talking about people within the department, not other figures.

Most don't. Fox is telling them there's nothing to see, just ignore all that fake news, so they are.

The specific question was about the attorney general or senior DoJ officials halting an investigation. So if the pressure was coming from outside DoJ, he's clear. (Also consider the difference between "halting" and "trying to influence".) It may sound pedantic, but during testimony you want to answer only the question asked.

Yeah, the attack on both Comey's and Mueller's credibility has already begun through Hannity and Fox Opinion piece writer Gregg Jarrett. That Gregg Jarrett dude is a special piece of work.

I'll refer you guys to my post on the second page. It will be glorious.

I doubt that this tactic will pay off.

There's a reason that pre-Trump, Fox News wasn't full Breitbart (with the exception of Hannity).

Comey was asked whether the DoJ ever tried to shut down an investigation and he denied it. The White House, and the President, aren't part of the DoJ.

Furthermore, the FBI is a branch of the DoJ. That there's some level of coordination between them is entirely normal.

What's not normal, at least in recent times, is for the President to talk to the FBI director. In fact, Obama reportedly told Comey at his swearing-in ceremony that that's the last time they'd ever talk to each other, at least as long as they both serve in their respective office.

Source on the last part. Maybe publically, but privately, that sounds like rubbish

It is not typical for FBI directors to meet alone with the President. Justice leadership takes the lead generally on talking to administrations.

When President Barack Obama met with Comey to discuss appointing him as FBI Director, the President made clear the two would not meet one-on-one after that, according to a separate person with knowledge of the matter. "This was (Obama's) policy with the FBI director and with judicial appointees.

He felt the White House should have a clear separation from the FBI about ongoing investigations -- there should never be any intimation that the President or the White House staff was leaning in and trying to influence live investigations by the FBI," the source said.

And fox is happy for people to keep missing that distinction. Hannity and Kim dotcom is going to be some real Geraldo Capone level shit.

Well I guess Comey found it strange how Trump approached him earlier (especially after the inaugeration). There are reports about it.

When Trump talked to him to "lay down" the investigations Comey probably still thought that Trump is just an idiot and he didn't mean it this way - as he is just BronkoMcDump. So he made some notes and didn't say anything about it.

But the whole thing about firing Comey was super strange. Trump didn't talk to him to find a successor or talk to Comey to resign in a amical way. He didn't show a reason before.
Normal thing would have been to talk with him, maybe include him to find his successor - if the public doesn't trust Comey anymore.
But he fired him via TV - and then said he was contemplating this for a long time.

So it is understandable Comey thinks now that Trumps remarks about the investigation were not just dumb idiot Trump talk - and that they pretty much a were meant as a thread.
And if you look back with all the "loyality" talk - that is a pretty reasonable thing to think.
