Is it bad that I'm surprised?

I mean, always thought the guy was smarmy. But those tweets are bad. We're talkin pro-athlete bad. We're talkin Chris Brown's twitter bad....

They are suspending him permanently? I think this is definitely questionable stuff he wrote but out right bigoted I don't know. Maybe it is because I hear this kind of talk a lot from guys. Maybe a temporary suspension would have been better. Time for him to cool off and reflect.

Come out of the closet, girl.

Nevermind, stay married to your wife and get fucked in the ass on the DL while telling us how bad the gays are.

His response to the controversy.

Based on several tweets I made on my Twitter feed on Super Bowl Sunday yesterday, I have been accused by members of the LGBT community of being supportive of violence against gays and lesbians and bullying.

That is furthest from the truth, and I sincerely regret any offense my words have caused.

I have consistently said on television, radio, and in print, that I am steadfast against bullying. As I wrote on CNN.com, as well as said on the nationally-syndicated Dr. Phil Show, I believe parents and schools need to take an active role in ending this epidemic that afflicts kids nationwide, gay or not.

In fact, I was bullied in school, and watched another middle schooler pulled a knife on my father when he boarded our school bus and came to the defense of me and my brother. My position has been unequivocal on this issue, and will remain so.

When we witness violence in this country against someone because they are gay, or being beaten because they are Black, that speaks to a vicious cycle that seems to be never ending.

My joking about smacking someone, whether it was in response to a commercial or food they prepare for a Super Bowl party or wearing an opposing team’s jersey, was stated in jest. It was not meant literally, and in no way would I ever condone someone doing such a thing.

As I said repeatedly, I often make jokes about soccer in the U.S., and my crack about David Beckham’s commercial was related to that and not to anyone’s sexuality. To those who construed my comment as being anti-gay or homophobic or advancing violence, I’m truly sorry. I can certainly understand how someone could come to a different conclusion than the one I meant.

I’m disheartened that my words would embolden prejudice. While public debate over social issues is healthy, no matter which side someone takes, there is no room for debate as to whether we need to be respectful of others.

As someone who has spoken out forcefully against bigotry against African Americans and other minorities, as well as sexism against women, I fully understand how a group who has been unfairly treated would be offended by such comments, and, again, I am sorry for any offense my remarks caused.

But my focus has been steadfast and resolute in being a strong voice against such issues. My conviction has always been to speak progressively on issues confronting this country, and I will continue to do so.

Anyone else hate the bolded? I'd rather someone just say "yeah I fucked up" than "I'm sorry you were offended."

I think calling those tweets "homophobic" is stretching it a little, and I'm gay.

50 Cent, however, has had very homophobic tweets. There was not enough outrage about them...

That was my feeling as well. They weren't comments I'd make personally, but I didn't read them and think "oh my gosh".

I think he just thought he was being funny.

Perhaps the best thing about this is that now conservatives can't say "if a black person said something homophobic on television nothing would happen!"

I wonder if he's gonna say anything about it on the Tom Joyner Morning Show tomorrow...he's comments on political issues daily.

That's new and accepted media speak. I'm guessing maybe a professional helped him put that 'apology' together. But most apologies these days seem to say 'I'm sorry if anyone was offended by what I did' rather than 'I'm sorry for what I did'. You can see right through it, but the rest of his statements are still ducking responsibility, saying that he was only joking, etc. Which could be true, but as a media personality, in a public forum, he should have known better.

What if the person feels he didn't fuck up?
He should know he fucked up. If I came in to a SB party wearing a pink football uniform, and a friend said 'somebody smack him', it would probably be a joke, I would probably take it for the joke it was intended, because it was in the context of him suggesting that I was 'acting a fool'. But the context changes when it's a stranger, or someone who could be joking, or might not be joking at all. He was talking out of school, like he was joking with his best buddies, except he was on twitter. He should have known better.

People are sensitive. Can't be talking like that as a media figure. He should have known better. Can't go around offending people. His career's a wrap over fucking tweets...

Somehow, all those people manage to compromise on Matthew 19:21, Luke 18:22 (and other similar verses).

Indeed! Like I said I've known some awesome religious people, but the way some of them go on and on and on about gays, abortion, and evolution (and very little else) is amazing. When's the last time Martin spoke out against a sham marriage or an unbiblical divorce in a tweet? for that matter, when was the last time he condemned premarital sex in a tweet? He doesn't. This is about gays for him because that's one of his focuses. And not in a good way.

I think he passed that long ago when he called gays sinful.

Did he really? Fuck any benefit of the doubt for this guy then.

He's being forced to. He regrets the fact that people are getting all worked up over it. In no way is he sorry for sounding off about what he believes in.

Because everyone's demanding one, and so one has to be issued.

Easier to just issue a faux apology than to mean it.

True. And because of his employment. It just reeks of tackiness to me though.

I DID link his old article twice. Here it is again though!

As individuals, gays and lesbians - those claiming to be born this way and others who say they have evolved to live a homosexual lifestyle - are naturally going to want to live their life as they see fit. And yes, the last thing they want to do is sit in a church and listen to someone from the pulpit castigate their way of life. I get that. But someone who is living with a member of the opposite sex while not married also doesn't want to hear that being preached. And surely the man or woman cheating on their spouse prefers not to hear their behavior cast as being sinful and unGodly.

And he thinks he's a progressive.

Don't get me started on abortion.
The bible doesn't talk about abortion, and in the few times that unborn babies are mentioned, it's quite obvious that they are not considered fully formed people.

The theological foundation of the church's opposition to abortion is even more shaky than their stand on gay marriage.

Sure. And for the record I don't really want this to become about abortion nor do I know what his stance is on that issue. But it is amazing how some issues get cherry picked. I get the sense most of it is because they don't usually have a personal direct connection to a gay person.

the fuck? he shouldn't be apologizing for those tweets. from the looks of this thread, he should be apologize for a lot of other things he said, though.
